  • Poor soil fertility Traditional farming techniques Low levels of technology
The low fertility, resulting from the acidic soils in the region, does not allow farms to be permanently located. Instead forms of shifting cultivation are adopted. The most common is Chitemene, a type of slash and burn method of cultivation. With this type of land management the time that the land is used to grow crops is small compared with the time that it lies fallow. Rural Lifestyles The villagers cut branches from trees in the area that they are going plant their crops. The branches are then laid out to dry. Before the rains start in November they are gathered up, heaped where the land is to be cropped, and burnt. The crops are then grown in the ash-enriched soil. The plot will be farmed intensively for 4-5 years growing maize and other crops such as ground nuts, millet, and beans. After that it is abandoned and left fallow for 20-30 years during which time another field is opened up for cultivation. It has been estimated that Chitemene can only support 2-4 people per square km. It also relies on a high level of rainfall to guarantee the long-term fertility of the land is maintained. In addition there is an obvious need for trees.

Ratified 1st October 1999
For further information, contact Ian Ewen-Street MP
To propose amendments contact the National Policy Convenors for details, policy@greens.org.nz.
Introduction
The Green Party is committed to practices that promote strong rural communities and strong rural economies. These practices acknowledge the need to protect the land for future generations and to sustain the level of services necessary to make rural life not merely viable, but financially rewarding and positively enjoyable. The services include health, education, transport, employment, financial services and recreational opportunities. Implementation of Green policies will ultimately require legislative change. Initially it will require consultation with and acceptance by all New Zealanders, including those in the rural community. We favour using information, encouragement and incentives rather than regulation. We recognize that there are national and local community benefits (such as reduced health costs) to be gained from moving to sustainable production practices, but we do not expect producers to bear the brunt of the cost of conversion.

    Antibiotics, Agriculture, and Catholic Teaching
  • Antibiotics have been widely used to treat bacterial infections for more than 50 years.
  • It was recognized that bacteria develop resistance to antibiotics just a few years after
antibiotics became widely used. Bacteria have the capacity to evolve defense mechanisms
against antibiotics and can become resistant to their effects.
  • When bacteria develop resistance to an antibiotic, the antibiotic is no longer capable of
treating or curing the disease or infection caused by the target bacteria.
  • The more antibiotics are used the more rapidly bacterial resistance to them develops.
  • There are an increasing number of people infected with bacteria that are resistant to the
best antibiotic treatments resulting in higher health care costs, increased suffering, and
    possibly death.
  • Medical use of antibiotics is one major contributor to the emergence of antibiotic resistance probably due to the overuse of antibiotics. However, the liberal use of antibiotics in livestock production is another important contributor.
  • More than 80 percent of the antibiotics produced in the U.S. each year are used on
