Agriculture for Kids: U.S. farmers grow the food that feeds the world. There are more than 2 million farms in the nation and in California alone there are nearly 90 thousand. Some states (like Texas and Iowa) have more farms, but California farmers grow the most. The USDA Farm Service Agency helps farmers by loaning them money to buy equipment. And after a flood or a drought, we help the farmers put their fields back in shape. We also help farmers take some of their farmland (along rivers) and plant them so birds and wildlife will visit. U.S. organic agriculture
Introduction
Organic farming became one of the fastest growing segments of U.S. agriculture during the 1990's. Certified organic cropland more than doubled from 1992 to 1997, and two organic livestock sectors–eggs and dairy–grew even faster. ERS recently analyzed data from State and private certification groups to calculate the extent of certified organic farmland acreage and livestock in the United States( U.S. Organic Farming Emerges in the 1990s: Adoption of Certified Systems Farmers in 49 States dedicated 1.3 million acres of farmland to organic production systems in 1997. Two-thirds of the farmland was used for growing crops, with Idaho, California, North Dakota, Montana, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Colorado, and Iowa the top producing States ( table 3 ). Colorado and Alaska had the largest amount of organic pasture and rangeland. Nearly half the States were raising certified organic livestock (
