General Information
Agronomy majors learn about three basic natural elementscrops, soils, and climatesand their interdependence in producing food, feed, fiber, and fuel. Agronomists study theory and practices for improving crop production while conserving natural resources and maintaining environmental quality. What the Major is Like Agronomy (sometimes called crop science, plant science, or soil science) uses plant and soil sciences to produce abundant, high-quality food, feed, and fiber. Crop and plant sciences relate primarily to the genetics, breeding, physiology, and management of field and turf crops. Soil science concentrates on soil physics, soil chemistry, soil origin, soil microbiology, soil fertility, and soil management. It also covers other soil uses, such as foundations for buildings and road construction, waterways, and waste disposal systems. Majors also learn to understand the components of weather and climate. Agronomy students generally begin by studying soil science, crop production, botany or biology, geology, chemistry, English, and statistics. In addition, they study physical and social sciences, communications, economics, and mathematics. All agronomy students are encouraged to take at least one course in plant pathology, entomology, weed science, and soil fertility/plant nutrition.

Training
Training for the degree of Agronomist, specialisation general agriculture, is based on four main disciplines: plant production, animal production, ecology and economics. As a specialist in large-scale arable farming (cereals, industrial crops and fodder crops), the agronomist knows how to apply – or develop – advanced plant breeding, fertilisation and crop protection technologies. Harvesting, storage and use of produce and, currently, research into high-quality production are part of his or her work. Wide knowledge of animal production enables the agronomist to tackle temperate-region cattle, sheep and pig breeding techniques without any problems. Training in agricultural economics, accounting, marketing, law, data processing and statistics provides a rounded view of farm business management, from production through to marketing and processing of produce.

http://www.agron.iastate.edu/~loynachan/585/creat.htm
Agronomy 585 CREATIVE COMPONENT Spring 2002 Agronomy 585 may be taken for 2 credits (lecture only) or 3 credits (lecture and a creative component). For those wishing 3 credits, the additional credit will allow you an opportunity to complete a creative component in an area of your choosing. Although additional time and effort are required, you likely will find the creative component worthwhile. With the creative component, you will have an opportunity to thoroughly develop an interest area. The only requirement is that the topic you choose be outside your research area and deal with some aspect of soil microbiology or biochemistry . You will have three options for the creative component: a) a "hands-on" project in the laboratory, b) an extensive literature review article, or c) a research proposal. You need to choose your area of study by the third week of February and you will need to submit a preliminary proposal or a general outline (10 points). A.
