Patients diagnosed as HIV-positive, a condition which can precede development of the full-blown AIDS virus, have plenty to be optimistic about these days. New drug therapies can delay the onset of AIDS with increasing success, allowing patients to lead normal, healthy lives for many years. By pushing back the onset of AIDS, chances increase that researchers may discover a cure within the patient's lifetime.
Natural Approaches to Health
There's one herb that should be avoided

Many natural approaches to health and healing can support these drug therapies and help offset their side effects, according to Charles K. Rosenberg, C.N., an instructor at Bastyr University and a nutritionist in private practice in Seattle. "It's important that patients not rely solely on drugs to support the health of their immune systems," Rosenberg says. "They're battling with a virus and the body doesn't do that alone. It requires all kinds of nutrients, for example, to fight infection." Because HIV-positive patients are susceptible to opportunistic infections, it's especially important to keep the immune system as strong as possible; Rosenberg advocates proper diet, appropriate dietary supplements, and other health-supporting practices such as exercise.

Women, Food and HIV
By Lynda E. Bell, RD Bell based this article for BETA on her years of experience consulting with HIV positive women about diet and nutrition. In this spirit, she addresses women about their nutritional concerns and concludes with a "wish list" with especial regard to women with HIV. The wish list is especially germane as people with and concerned about HIV, from community activists to clinical physicians to research scientists, convene in Geneva this summer.

Dietary Concerns and Dietitians: Part of a Combination Approach to Health Care
There are so many issues to be concerned about when you find out that you are HIV positive that it may seem impossible to take care of everything. First, there is the emotional impact caused by the test result. Then there are financial issues, possibly housing issues, and perhaps issues of substance use or abuse. At some point, you begin to evaluate your health with the help of doctors, pharmacists and dietitians. Well no, that is not what dietitians are actually trained to do. Rather, dietitians evaluate your food choices and eating habits, your medical condition and clinical health status, your body composition and weight. Dietitians can help teach you how to make food choices that are consistent with what is currently known to be optimal nutrition for women living with HIV.

Antiviral Therapy
The goal of antiviral therapy is to disable HIV replication. For instance, AZT, ddI and ddC all interfere with production of reverse transcriptase, a protein the virus must use in order to reproduce. Protease inhibitors, such as Crixivan, interfere with HIV's use of the protease enzyme, another essential component to its reproduction. For more detailed discussion of antiviral drugs, refer to the

TB worldwide Tuberculosis (TB) is a disease that kills approximately 2 million people each year. It is estimated that between 2002 and 2020, approximately 1000 million people will be newly infected, over 150 million people will get sick, and 36 million will die of TB - if control is not further strengthened. What is the relationship between TB and HIV? TB is the leading cause of death among HIV infected people. It has been estimated that TB accounts for up to a third of AIDS deaths worldwide. About a third of the 40 million people living with HIV/AIDS at the end of 2001were estimated to be co-infected with TB (Mycobacterium tuberculosis). What causes TB? TB is caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The bacteria can attack any part of the body, but it normally attacks the lungs. TB is highly prevalent in many resource-poor countries and in poor urban 'pockets' of industrialised countries. The spread of TB A person can have active or inactive TB. The TB bacteria can be spread through the air by people with active TB. People with active TB can pass the bacteria on to whoever they come into close contact with. Active TB or TB disease means that the bacteria is active in the body and the immune system is unable to stop the bacteria from growing. When a person with active TB coughs, sneezes or spits, people nearby may breathe in the TB bacteria and become infected. Left untreated, each person with active TB will infect on average between 10 and 15 people every year.

www.cwac.org (Children and HIV) 1. How many children are known to be HIV+ in the UK? As of September 2002, 1233 children under the age of 15 have been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. In addition, there are 1211 children between the ages of 15-19. In the last ten years (1992-2002), 2254 children have been born to infected mothers. These children are either of indeterminate HIV status or not infected. Nevertheless, they are still affected by their mother’s illness. 2. How many children are living worldwide with HIV/AIDS? Of the 40 million people living with HIV/AIDS worldwide, nearly 2.7 million are children under the age of 15, and 11.8 million are young people aged 15-24. An estimated 3 million people die from AIDS-related causes every year. 3. How long can a child born with HIV survive? In the UK, life expectancy for children has improved and subsequently increased with the development of combination therapy. Today for example, one adolescent who acquired HIV at birth has now reached their 20th birthday. Therefore, as treatment and research advances there is hope for a much improved quality of life. There is a small core of children who are "long-term non-progressors" aged between 12-16 who have yet to start on any HIV therapy. This is a promising sign of healthy living in children and highlights the importance of a good nutritional diet. This gives us hope for a more optimistic future for today’s children.

    Conclusion
Oral candidiasis, which is also called thrush, is a fungal infection of the mouth and/or throat. Candidiasis of the throat is called esophageal candidiaisis (see chart While oral candidiasis can sometimes occur without symptoms, the most common symptoms are discomfort and burning of the mouth and throat and an altered sense of taste (often described as "bad"). Creamy white or yellowish spots on the mouth and throat that can be removed by light scraping are also common. These may be accompanied by cracking, redness, soreness and swelling at the corners of the mouth. A bad case can include mouth sores. Oral candidiasis is rare if CD4+ cell counts are above 500. Outbreaks are more common as the count drops to 100. Oral candidiasis may be more difficult to treat when CD4+ cell counts fall below 50. Table of Contents Cause
Oral candidiasis is caused by the fungus called Candida . Everyone has small quantities of the fungus in the mouth, vagina, digestive tract and skin. In healthy persons, "friendly" bacteria and the immune system prevent the fungus from causing disease. However, a damaged or weakened immune system, as can be the case in HIV disease, makes it easier for

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a progressive disease characterized by suppression of the immune system and an increased risk for developing a rare cancer known as Kaposi’s Sarcoma. AIDS results from infection with a retrovirus known as the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) which attacks the T lymphocytes. The B lymphocytes, macrophages, and other cells of the immune system are also affected. Although AIDS is a fatal disease, AIDS patients do not actually die from AIDS. They die, instead, from secondary infections associated with an impaired immune system such as cancer or pneumonia. Not every person exposed to HIV becomes infected and not all who test antibody positive for HIV actually develop AIDS and AIDS-related diseases. Actual development of AIDS depends on a number of factors. These include pre-existing conditions of the immune system, nutritional status, repeated exposure to HIV and abuse of prescription or nonprescription drugs. Numerous stressors weaken the immune system including abuse of alcohol or tobacco, poor diet, lack of sleep, or generally poor health.
Information is only beginning to become available regarding nutrition’s role in preventing and treating AIDS, but it is known that more than two-thirds of HIV-infected individuals have a vitamin and/or mineral deficiency. Malnutrition weakens immunity and makes a person susceptible to infection and disease including HIV infection. It is common to find AIDS patients nutritionally deficient even when consuming a nutritionally adequate diet or supplementing with vitamins and minerals. Researchers speculate that HIV alters nutrient metabolism or contributes to poor absorption, and
