AIDS stands for acquired immune deficiency syndrome - a disease where the body is unable to fight off many infectious diseases as it normally could. The human immunodeficiency virus known as HIV causes AIDS by infecting and damaging part of the body's defenses against infection, namely the white blood cells known as CD4 helper lymphocytes. The only known way for the HIV virus to be transmitted from one person to another is when it is spread from the inside of an infected person's body to the inside of another person's body. This can occur through passing of infected fluids - such as semen ("cum," the fluids from ejaculation) or blood. Even if only tiny amounts of fluids are spread, a person can become infected. How does that happen? HIV can be spread through sexual intercourse if one of the partners has the virus. The virus can be spread by an infected person's blood, semen, and secretions from the cervix or vagina. HIV can travel to another person through cuts and sores on the penis, rectum, vagina, and probably the mouth. These cuts or sores are often so small that a person isn't even aware of their presence. Girls who have genital sores or ulcers because they have a sexually transmitted disease are at an increased risk for infection. HIV can be spread in this way from a man to a woman, a woman to a man, a man to a man, and a woman to a woman.

This page contains images of some of the of HIV and AIDS posters that AVERT has in its archive from around the world. Whilst the collection is in no way a comprehensive representation of all of the posters that have been produced over the years, the images we have selected do cover a range of styles, topics and years. Please click on the image you would like to view The early posters (1984) These two posters from the UK were produced by the Terrence Higgins Trust. They are interesting from an historical perspective, as they were produced soon after HTLV-III was identified as the virus that caused AIDS. HTLV-III became known as HIV in 1986.
Who can get AIDS (1985 - 1987) These two posters are examples from 1985. They explain who is at risk from AIDS.
This poster, produced by AVERT in 1986, also explains who is at risk, but also includes some of the more simple messages that the next group of posters use. It is also of an historical interest, as it predicts that there will be 400 deaths a month and 250,000 million people infected by 1991. These figures were quoted by the Public Health Laboratory Service in 1986. In fact, the actual rates were nowhere near as high as this. In 1986, the British Government mounted a poster and leaflet campaign with the slogan "Don't Aid AIDS". This changed into the theme of "Don't die of ignorance" over the course of the next year. This poster fits in between the two campaigns. It does mirror the televison advert by using an image of the word AIDS on a tombstone.

Whether you are Gay, Bisexual, Heterosexual or Transsexual learning to cope and live with HIV is hard. This site tries to show how you can live a fulfilling and happy life even with this virus. You will find some very frank discussion of sexual behaviour and its relationship to the HIV virus. The aim of this site is not to shock but to inform and educate. There is no cure for HIV nor any prospect of one on the horizon, even an effective vaccine is proving very difficult to achieve. So, prevention through education and the experience of others worldwide is for the moment, the only weapon we have. Speaking for myself, having been infected with the HIV virus back in the early 1990's, I can honestly say it changed my entire life. I'm just glad I am still here to share my experiences with you. I hope you too will feel able to share your experiences with me and the many other people who visit this site looking for advice, guidance and a little re-assurance.
