The upcoming winter will bring slightly below average temperatures, while next summer will give a break to Southerners who sweltered through last year's drought and record-high temperatures, predicts a University of Alabama geography professor. Dr. David Shankman, a professor of geography who regularly teaches a climatology class at UA, said the weather in 2001 will not be the newsmaker it was this year. "I expect we'll have a slightly cooler winter ­ nothing extreme," Shankman said. "The drought will not continue through this next summer," he predicted. And while the typical dry spell might pop up during the middle of the year, "we will not have anything near the drought conditions we had this year," he said. "There is no evidence of those specific water temperatures in the Pacific Ocean that would cause those extreme types of weather patterns for the Southeast," Shankman said.

Physical Features. Alabama unite near the S.W. corner of the state, their waters discharging into Mobile Bay by the Mobile and Tensas rivers. The Black Warrior is a considerable stream which joins the Tombigbee from the E. The valleys in the N. and N.E. are usually deep and narrow, but in the Coastal Plain they are broad and in most cases rise in three successive terraces above the stream. The harbour of Mobile was formed by the drowning of the lower part of the valley of the Alabama and Tombigbee rivers as a result of the sinking of the land here, such sinking having occurred on other parts of the Gulf coast. The fauna and flora of Alabama are similar to those of the Gulf states in general and have no distinctive characteristics.

June Hollis My name is June Hollis, and this was my first web site. I teach Advanced World Geography at Brandon High School in Brandon, Mississippi. I have taught English and social studies for 25 years at schools in the central Mississippi area including Florence Junior and High Schools, Chastain Junior High, and Pearl Junior High and have been at Brandon for 18 years. It is a wonderful school with wonderful students, faculty, and administration. I am lucky to call it home. I am a HUGE Brandon football fan! I earned my BS in English and History at the University of Southern Mississippi in 1965 and my Masters in Education with emphasis in History from Mississippi State University in 1980. I have earned post-graduate hours in geography and history from the University of North Alabama, University of Missouri at Columbia, California State at Chico, University of West Georgia, Mississippi University for Women, Mississippi State University, and University of Mississippi. In the summer of 1998, I received a Hayes Fulbright grant to study Eastern Europe. Along with fifteen other teachers from Mississippi, I spent five weeks in Prague, Czech Republic and Bratislava, Slovak Republic studying architecture, art, history, literature, government, and other subjects.
