I explained at the beginning that this is a fun activity that would not be graded except for participation. Search this site Cartographic Research Lab publishes new atlas The University of Alabama's geography department has made it a little easier to research census information throughout the state. Each of its three new atlases offers something different for the user. Erin Wolfe, staff reporter The University of Alabama's geography department has recently published a new atlas, "Atlas of Alabama Metropolitan Areas," which offers information on each of the 12 metropolitan areas in Alabama. The atlas is one of three that have recently been released from UA's Cartographic Research Laboratory. Alabama's metropolitan areas are Anniston, Auburn-Opelika, Birmingham, Phenix City, Decatur, Dothan, Florence, Gadsden, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery and Tuscaloosa. A metropolitan area is defined by the Bureau of the Census as a city with 50,000 or more inhabitants or urbanized areas with a total population of at least 100,000. The atlas offers information on these areas related to their population. Percentages of military veterans, occupations and median household income rates are all found within the atlas. The data is taken from information collected in the 2000 Census. It was assembled by Craig Remington, director of the Cartographic Research Laboratory for the geography department within the College of Arts and Sciences. Remington said the atlas offers a quick reference of information for its users. "I would call it a handy reference," Remington said. "It's unique. No one has ever created an atlas dealing with metro areas before. It shows the spatial distribution of census demographic statistics."
