IT Press IT Jobs Contact AITA The IT Industry No Longer Alabama's Best Kept Secret Printed with permission by Huntsville Technology Today Written by Karen Yarbrough What do 14 emerging Information Technology companies from different areas of Alabama have in common? A lot. The companies are all part of the IT Industry, one of America's fastest growing industries with nearly $2 trillion in worldwide sales, encompassing computers, software, telecommunications products and services, Internet and on-line services, systems integration and professional services companies. And the universal need for money to grow recently gave each Alabama IT company the opportunity to present their business profile to venture capitalists during the Alabama Information Technology Association's (AITA) IT Forum 2000 in March. As part of AITA's mission to advocate, educate, and promote Alabama IT companies, the board of the newly-formed non-profit organization recognized the need for an event to bring technology entrepreneurs together with venture capitalists, banks, law firms and any other services that play a role in the information technology field. The first IT Forum 2000 accomplished just that with a regional attendance of over 300 crowding into Birmingham's Museum of Art auditorium to hear company profiles throughout the day. Attendees and presenters filled the hallways taking advantage of the intense networking along with visiting sponsors' booths or negotiating a few minutes in a corner with a venture capitalist or angel investor. Jack Sheffield, Director-Investment Banking for Deutsche Bank, the world' s largest bank, provided the keynote address.

Dooley, Ph.D., Contributing Writer It is noteworthy that the mergers affecting the two Huntsville companies generated greater than $100 million in wealth for their founders. Hopefully some of those new monies will help to stimulate the next generation of entrepreneurial companies. The growth of the biotech industry is tightly linked to two issues - the infusion of new capital and new start-up firms. How will Alabama fare during the years ahead in obtaining much needed cash, which in turn plays a critical role in the number of new entrepreneurial launches? The comments I have prepared are an opinion of the status of some of our state's successes over the past few years and the challenges we face moving forward. The Down Side Perhaps more than anything else, our successes in Alabama will depend on a key macroeconomic issue almost entirely outside of our control - the crisis in the Middle East, especially in Israel, Afghanistan, and other countries, resulting in part by the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 by militant Islamists. The robustness of our American economy and the global capital markets might be severely punished by events of a global military nature during the uncertain season ahead. Although it appears likely that world events will affect our capital markets, many of us just do not fully comprehend the extent.

Midshipmen to study UWB wireless communications and radar Annapolis, MD - Time Domain Corporation, a worldwide leader in the development of Ultra Wideband radio technology (UWB), today announced that its UWB PulsON chip technology has been added to the United States Naval Academy's (USNA) curriculum. The announcement was made during the United States Naval Academy Conference on Information Technology here. The conference serves as a forum for midshipmen, faculty, alumni, Naval leaders, and industry leaders to see how state-of-the-art and emerging technologies can better equip the Navy of tomorrow. During the conference, Time Domain demonstrated a high-speed wireless communications link and an invisible radar dome. Midshipmen at the USNA will be using Time Domain's PulsON Application Demonstrators (PADs) to conduct wireless communications and radar studies. One of the USNA's Trident scholars has completed a study of RF propagation aboard ships using Time Domain's PulsON technology. Only a limited number of exceptional students qualify for the Trident Scholar Program, which allows midshipmen to pursue independent research during their senior year.

Profile of the Horse Industry in Alabama
The Alabama horse industry directly produces goods and services valued exceeding 573 million dollars. The equine industry has nearly a one billion-dollar impact on the Alabama economy when the multiplier effect of spending by owners, industry suppliers, and employees is taken into account. Accounting for off-site spending of event participants and spectators would result in an even higher figure. Over 44,000 Alabama households are involved in the industry as horse owners, service providers, employees and volunteers. Even more participate as spectators. Nearly every county has a show facility, a local horse association, and a regular pattern of equine events, shows, or competitions. Birmingham is the home of one racetrack with a spring and early summer season that features thoroughbred/quarter horse racing and year-round simulcast viewing some other tracks for pari-mutuel purposes. Alabama's agricultural sector generates about 20% of the State's total gross product. About 15% of this is horse-related.

Alabama's Forest Products Industry
The importance of the forest industry to Alabama's economy and its people is enormous. Alabama's forests and the industry they support contributes in excess of $5 billion to the State's annual economy. Alabama's forest industry directly provides employment for 66,800 people. They have an annual payroll of over $1.7 billion. In 1993, the Alabama forest industry announced $603 million of new and expanding investments and that will add an additional 2,900 new jobs. Alabama has been blessed with great resources from which its forest industry has grown. Its expansive forests, bountiful water supplies, and industrious people have all contributed greatly to the growth of its industry within the State. As a result, the forest product industry is the #1 manufacturing industry in Alabama today! Timber is the dominant crop harvested in 34 counties with a value at the first delivery point of over $1 billion. Totally, $9 billion dollars worth of forest products are produced in Alabama each year. Alabama's forest industry is an industry with future. Because it is based on renewable resources and because world demand for forest products will grow into the foreseeable future, the continued importance and growth of this industry within the State is highly probable. The future well-being of Alabama's economy and its citizens will heavily influenced by health of its forest products industry.

Having a plan in place eliminates confusion as to what actions to take and at what time. We encourage all businesses and industries to purchase a NOAA Weather Alert Radio, so that they may be aware of when severe weather or winter weather events are imminent. We have prepared for you sample plans which you may modify for your business. These plans address severe weather events, winter storm events, and special activities (such as employee picnics). Our hope is that you will develop your own plan for your safety, your employees' safety, and the safety of those visiting your facilities. Severe Weather Preparedness Tips for Businesses and Industries The severe weather preparedness rules developed for individuals and families under Disaster Preparedness and Planning for Individuals and Families can be easily adapted for use in the business and industrial setting.

Alabama turfgrass industry seeing green
By Jamie Creamer, Auburn University The 23,000 acres of Bermuda, centipede and zoysia grass harvested on Alabama sod farms last year generated close to $200 million in revenue, rivaling cotton as the state’s top cash crop. That’s proof positive that turfgrass-sod production, which 25 years ago claimed less than 3,000 acres of Alabama cropland, has come into its own as a profitable alternative to row crops and has developed into a highly viable industry in the state, said Auburn University agricultural economist John Adrian. "The growth of the industry has been impressive," Adrian, head of the College of Agriculture’s Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology, noted. "In 1978, Alabama had 26 sod producers, with an average farm size of 110 acres. Today, there are at least 89 producers, and the average farm size is 315 acres." Those statistics were among the findings of an Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station (AAES) study by Adrian and AU graduate research assistant Jennifer Cain to get a clearer picture of where Alabama’s turfgrass-sod industry stands now and to forecast where it is headed. The study indicated that, after almost three decades of phenomenal growth, Alabama’s turfgrass industry may have reached what Adrian called the "maturing" stage. "Any increase in acreage from here on is going to be largely the result, not of new folks getting into the business, but of established producers expanding or merging their operations to take advantage of substantial economies of size and scale," Adrian said. "Larger farms have lower costs per unit and higher returns per acre than smaller ones."
