News Release ALABAMA'S NURSERY INDUSTRY BRINGS IN LARGE CASH RECEIPTS
AUBURN, ALA.Alabama is the second largest peanut producing state in the nation, cotton is a major crop in the State's Tennessee River Valley, and soybeans are grown on more than a half-million acre. Still, none of these crops brings in as much in cash receipts as does Alabama's nursery industry.
A recent survey by the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station indicates that the State's 250 nurseries employ nearly 12,000 workers full time and thousands more for part time work. In addition, these nursery crops form the hub around which revolves landscape contractors, garden centers, transportation, installation and maintenance of recreation facilities, and other businesses.
Estimated total sales of nursery crops in Alabama topped $165 million last year. Broadleaf evergreen shrubs, such as azaleas, hollies, and photinias, made up nearly half of sales. Narrow leaved evergreen shrubs, such as junipers, made up another 25 percent. Vines and ground covers, such as liriope and ivy, made up nearly 20 percent.
Though Alabama is a major ornamental-producing state, only about 15 percent of the plants grown here are sold here. Georgia provides the same size market, buying 15 percent of the plants grown in Alabama. Tennessee buys 12 percent and Florida and Texas about two percent each. About 15 percent of the Alabama nurseries surveyed ship plants outside the United States.

http://www.ag.auburn.edu/aaes/webpress/1989/poultry.htm
News Release HISTORY OF ALABAMA'S POULTRY INDUSTRY REVIEWED AUBURN, Ala.The story of how the poultry industry developed in Alabama is the best example I know of agribusiness success in the state. And the same thing can be said for the nation. Although the poultry industry as we know it today seems new, poultry has been important to the U. S. economy for a long time. In fact, income from chicken and eggs accounted for more farm income than any other U. S. farm enterprise in the 1800s. Alabama's poultry industry provided little economic impact until the 1950s, but Auburn University was already doing research that would provide the support needed for the industry to develop. A modern research facility had been built by the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station in 1924, and this facility served the poultry research program well for more than 50 years. Then in 1977 it was replaced with a state of the art facility that allows Auburn researchers to continue to serve the poultry industry. Throughout the years, Auburn research has paralleled needs of the industry. Such things as upgrading nutrition, managing farm flocks to produce eggs the year round and force molting for off-season production were important efforts in early years. The problem posed by diseases and parasites was recognized early, and solutions generated through research. Genetic resistance was a successful solution resulting from research, and foundation breeding stock for the Auburn Leghorn was supplied to layer breeders.

February, 1994 Extension Service Promoted Women's Home Industry Through Craft Activity by Erin Kellen Are there any readers, particularly those who lived in Alabama between the two World Wars, familiar with organizations such as the Clay County Basketmakers Association, the Bullock County Home Industry Association and the Simmsville Long Leaf Pine Needle Basket Club? Others may remember visiting the Home Industries department at Loveman, Joseph and Loeb, a department store in downtown Birmingham. These enterprises developed out of United States Home Extension Service activities in Alabama. Congress passed the Smith-Lever Act in 1914, establishing the Cooperative Extension Service, whereby county agents would call on farm communities to teach farmers the latest agricultural technology and, as well, to teach home economics to women and girls. Home Extension Agents made quite an impact on the often isolated communities they served, many of which were without electrical service, telephones, or even rural mail delivery. In the South, the boll weevil and generations of agricultural practices that left much of the land eroded and unfertile had taken their toll. The Extension Service was a means by which the federal government hoped to transmit information that would help rural people upgrade their lives.

Agriculture: Alabama's No. 1 Industry
There are 48,000 people in Alabama who call themselves farmers. And for generations those few families have dedicated their lives to creating a $4.7 billion business—Alabama's largest.
But today, agriculture reaches far beyond the farm gate. Alabama's agribusiness industries account for 476,000 jobs with annual earnings of more than $9 billion. That's 21 percent of the state's workforce. In fact, 85 percent of all jobs created by agriculture are not on the farm at all. They include farm equipment dealers, seed and feed suppliers, food processors, exporters and retailers.
Together, these industries account for more than $43 billion or 22 percent of the state's direct output—more than any other industry.
