Recent hurricane damage to Alabama pecan orchards impacts pecan markets. The effects of the recent hurricanes, especially "Opal", on Alabama orchards are documented. The Alabama pecan industry was severely damaged and will have production reduced by about 50 percent for the next 5 to 10 years but should produce higher quality nuts. The potential for an increase in the frequency of hurricanes is expected to reduce Alabama's long-term significance in total U.S. pecan production.
