CONSERVATION COMMISSIONER TAKES POST MONTGOMERY – Barnett Lawley took the oath office today and assumed the job of Commissioner of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Governor Bob Riley praised his top pick for the cabinet level post. “Barnett has dedicated countless hours and tireless energies to preserving our state’s natural resources and promoting conservation efforts,” Riley said. “Now he has agreed to devote these energies and efforts to fulfilling the mission of the Department of Conservation so that we may preserve our environment for our children and grandchildren to enjoy.” The 57-year-old graduated from Auburn University in 1967 with a degree in Business Administration. The Pell City native recently retired as president and owner of the M.B. Lawley, Inc. petroleum company, a position he held for more than 30 years. While with the company, he served as president of the Alabama Oilmen’s Association and was the group’s legislative chairman for 21 years. The group honored him as Oilman of the Year three times. (Reuters) January 17, 2002 - The former home of Rosa Parks, the U.S. civil rights pioneer who sparked the landmark 1955-56 Montgomery bus boycott, has been named an official historic national landmark, a U.S. official said on Wednesday. The building at 620-638 Cleveland Court in Montgomery was placed on the National Register of Historic Places, said Edson Beall, a historian with the U.S. National Park Service, which oversees the register. Beall said the designation would protect the building from being torn down or altered as a result of federally funded projects. Local housing officials plan to hang a certificate in the building acknowledging Parks. Parks was living in an apartment in the building when she was arrested on Dec. 1, 1955, for refusing to give up her seat to a white person on a public bus.
