    The Geography of Petersburg, Alaska
Petersburg is the only population center on Mitkof island, located appx. 100 miles south of Juneau and 100 miles north of Ketchikan in Southeast Alaska (the area is locally referred to as "Southeast"). It is a smaller island located in the middle of the Alexander Archipelago. Mitkof Island is mountainous and heavily forested, as is most of Southeast Alaska. The island's highest point is Crystal Mountain (3317 ft.), with the island's other peaks averaging around 2500 feet. The high rugged mountains of the coast range tower above Mitkof, while the fjords and glaciers of the mainland lay just a few miles to the east. Mitkof Island is approximately 24 miles long and 135,000 acres in size. Ground cover consists mostly of muskeg... a spongy, grassy bog which always stays wet. The island of Mitkof is geographically tied to the island of Kupreanof. The two are separated by over 20 miles of narrow tidal waterway, the Wrangell Narrows, which in some areas is barely wide enough to accommodate the Alaska State ferry. The Wrangell Narrows is a rich fast waterway, with tides varying from a high of 19 feet to a low of -4 feet in one day. The Wrangell Narrows meet Frederick Sound at the north end of Mitkof Island, where Petersburg is located. Frederick Sound is a major Southeast waterway which intersects with lower Stephans Passage and Chatham Strait. The rich waterway of Frederick Sound is home to vigorous runs of salmon, deep dwelling halibut, and summertime humpback whales. The Stikine-LeConte Wilderness Area and Petersburg Creek-Duncan Salt Chuck Wilderness are nearby.

    INTRODUCTION
While Mr. Clawson used his Middle to High School students to do the research, I decided to apply the guidelines with my class of second graders. I knew that it would be a daunting task for them alone so I teamed up with a colleague who taught 5th grade, Mrs. Patricia Wise. We used the Geoportrait Research Guide for grades 2-6 to lay our foundation. Since we both taught geography through the 5 themes of location, place, human/environmental interactions, movement and regions, we decided to pair our students up in a buddy system, a 5th grader with a 2nd grader, and have small groups working cooperatively to do the research. We wanted our students to have an understanding of each theme so we had them work on all five and later we met to consolidate information, edit, write drafts, edit some more and select the pictures to go with each section. However, before we could even get off the ground with the research and writing, we knew we had to prepare our students for what lay ahead of them. We chose to do this through literature and began with stories such as Letting Swift River Go by Jane Yolen and A River Ran Wild In the Spring of 1998

The Aleutian Islands of Alaska extend beyond the line of 180 degrees longitude, which separates the Western and Eastern Hemisphere. If you traveled west from one Aleutian island to the next, you would reach the westernmost longitude of the United States and then, upon crossing the 180 degree line, reach the easternmost longitude. William Henry Seward, secretary of state under President Andrew Johnson, engineered the purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867. The United States paid Russia $7.2 million. What was called "Seward's Folly" at that time has turned out to be a good buy, producing large quantities of seafood, oil, and lumber products. The number-one employer in southeast Alaska today is government. In Juneau, Alaska's capital since 1906, nearly one out of every two working people is an employee of either state, federal, or local government. Alaska Book and Video Selections

John Muir canoed through the Alexander Archipelago in Southeast Alaska (Inside Passage) in 1879. Muir, naturalist, travel writer, and later founder of the Sierra Club, was the first to systematically explore Glacier Bay and Muir Glacier. Glacier Bay was called "big ice-mountain bay" by the Tlingit Indians and by John Muir as "a picture of icy wildness unspeakably pure and sublime." Alaska Book and Video Selections

Alaska Yesterday and Today , by Sarah Eppenbach, 7 th edited by Alan Ryan, 1997, Harcourt Brace & Company. This is a wonderful collection of twenty–eight eyewitness essays about life and travel in Alaska during the past 100 years. Well known contributors include John McPhee who encounters "kamikaze" bush pilots, Anne Morrow Lindbergh who is amazed simply at the sight of a road after a long flight over the trackless wastes of the North Slope, and John Muir with his first glimpses of Glacier Bay in 1879. These and other eyewitness accounts offer an enriching and personal perspective on the real Alaska and will encourage you to search out some of the excerpted books in preparation for a trip to Alaska.

    Alaska, an American Colony
    Stephen Haycox

Alaska has not evolved in a vacuum. It has been part of larger stories: the movement of Native peoples and their contact and accommodation to Western culture, the spread of European political economy to the New World, and the expansion of American capitalism and culture.
Alaska, an American Colony focuses on Russian America and American Alaska, bringing the story of Alaska up to the present and exploring the continuing impact of Alaska Native claims settlements, the trans-Alaska pipeline, and the Alaska Lands Act. In contrast to the stereotype of Alaska as a place where rugged individualists triumph over the harsh environment, distinguished historian Stephen Haycox offers a less romantic, more complex history that emphasizes the broader national and international contexts of Alaska's past and the similarities between Alaska and the American West. Covering cultural, political, economic, and environmental history, the book also includes an overview of the region's geography and the anthropology of Alaska's Native peoples.
Throughout Alaska, an American Colony, Haycox stresses the continuing involvement of Alaska Natives in the state's economic, political, and social life and development. He also explores the power of myth in historical representations of Alaska and the controlling influence of national perceptions of the region.

I love hunting and fishing, reading, cooking and the outdoors so sit back and prepare to visit some of my favorite places and Internet links.
If you enjoy hunting Our State Department of Fish and Game has a terrific web-site with fantastic pictures and lots of information about all areas of our Greatland
I promised a virtual tour and here it is. I live in a log cabin near Fairbanks which is the second largest city in my home state of Alaska . Our state is divided into boroughs and Fairbanks is the largest city in the North Star Borough
Reading has always been a passion of mine. Some of my earliest memories are of my mother telling me to get my nose out of that book and go outside to play. Most communities in the US have literacy programs and I would encourage anyone to volunteer to teach adults to read. Training programs are provided free of charge and the only skill you need is the ability to read. So look them up in the phone book and go for it!

Fishing and subsistence activities are prevalent. TLINGIT CARVING The Tlingit people are artistic by nature and some people would argue that their fine sense of workmanship and design is best exemplified through the medium of carving. Most Tlingit objects were carved from wood, the most readily available and highly useable substance. Other materials such as horn, copper and later silver were also decorated with carved figures.

    SONG: What a Wonderful World
My name is Barbara Logan and I will be your hostess. I arrived in the state of Alaska on July 7, 1977 and have lived in Fairbanks for over twenty-five years. When I was growing up, in hot central California, I always wished to live in a place where there was snow, so I could have a "white" Christmas. Well, now I have my "white" Christmases... also "white" Octobers, Novembers, Decembers, Januarys, Februarys, Marches and Aprils, and sometimes Septembers and Mays - EVERY YEAR! The lesson of this story is:
"BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR." (SMILE) Alaska is a beautiful state, filled with wilderness lands and an abundance of wildlife. It can get pretty cold here in the winter, but the mild summer weather makes up for the winter cold. The Aurora Borealis, or "Northern Lights," as we call them, are absolutely mesmerizing. It's well worth venturing out on a cold winter night to see them dance across the sky. I have a lot of information about Alaska and my Alaska photos on my pages linked below. I hope you can stay a while and experience a little bit of our life here in the "Last Frontier."
