Alaska Science Forum
July 12, 1983 Songwriters Take Liberties with Alaska's Geography
Article #617 by Larry Gedney This article is provided as a public service by the Geophysical Institute, University of Alaska Fairbanks, in cooperation with the UAF research community. Larry Gedney is a seismologist at the Institute. While most Alaskans take pride in their hardiness, even the most seasoned sourdough must blush when Johnny Horton proclaims in one of his best-selling records that "When It's Springtime In Alaska, It's 40 below." While that may be true on rare occasions, it's hardly commonplace. There are many examples of outlandish stories that have been told of life in the far north (also many very good ones, such as those written by Jack London). A couple of relatively recent songs illustrate the point that there is a lack of general knowledge about where Alaska is, and what it's all about. One example is found in Lefty Frizzell's fairly old (late 1950s) recording of "Saginaw, Michigan." In this saga, the hero, who is trying to woo his sweetheart in Saginaw, is repulsed by her father, who claims he is a bum. The hero comes to Alaska and, after a while, sends a telegram that claims that he has made the "Richest Strike In Klondike History." The girl's dad, who is obviously a greedy old cuss, now compliments the boy and wants to buy his claim, offering in the bargaining, his daughter's hand. Well, the deal is made, the kids are rich, and everything seems rosy. Except that our hero turns out to be a con-man. As the final words of the song go, (as narrated by the bridegroom):

From Anchorage the Seward Highway leads to, you guessed it, Seward, on the Kenai Peninsula. The Sterling Highway connects with the Seward and leads to Homer, which is absolutely the end of the road. The Parks Highway starts north of Anchorage in the town of Wasilla (population about 5000). It leads to Denali National Park and on to Fairbanks. The Dalton Highway, once known as the North Slope Haul Road, runs from Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay.

    Alaska's geography
Alaska is the largest state in the United States, with an area of 586,000 square miles roughly twice that of Texas and roughly one fifth the size of the lower 48 states combined. Alaska's tidal shoreline is estimated at more than 47,000 miles, more than that of the other 49 states combined. Anchorage, with a population of about 260,000, is Alaska's largest city. It is so much bigger than other communities in the state that other Alaskans like to say Anchorage is only 20 minutes from Alaska. More than half the state's population lives within a radius of 50 miles of Anchorage. The nearby communities of Eagle River, Wasilla, Palmer and Girdwood (Eagle River and Girdwood are officially part of the municipality) have growing populations of Anchorage commuters. Fairbanks is the second largest city, with a population of about 85,000, followed by Juneau, the state capital, with a population of about 30,000.

AK To the Aleut peoples, Alaska was “Alyeshka”, meaning the great land. Alaska, the 49th state, officially became a state on January 3, 1959. It was purchased from Russia for $7 million in 1867 and was made a territory of the United States in 1912. It is t he largest state in area, almost a fifth as large as all the rest of the United States. It remained largely unexplored until the Gold Rush in the 1880s. Fur trade was the main economic activity in Alaska for more than 150 years after 1741. In the 1880s and 1890s major gold deposits were discovered. In addition, other minerals, particularly copper, tin, mercury, and silver, were also mined. During the 1940s and 1950s large military bases were built. Beginning in the late 1970s, the economy underwent a fundamental change as the state's enormous oil deposits were exploited. Almost a third of Alaska is north of the Arctic Circle. At Point Barrow, Alaska's northernmost point, the sun never sets between May and August. Tourists come to see Alaska's mountain scenery, historic coastal towns and the state's vast areas of untamed wilderness. Mount McKinley in the Alaska Range is North America's highest peak at 20,320 feet and one of the greatest challenges for mountain climbers.
