Archaeology in Albania
During the XIX century Albania was "invaded" by foreign archaeologists. The first National Archaeological Museum was established in 1948, and then sistenatic research began in Apollonia. Archaeology in Albania is rich of information and it is very important for many conferences and also written in many books. There are many testimonials of prehistoric human beings living in Albanian territories and also of some prehistorical houses. The region of Korca, in South -Eastern Albania is the most-known. Testimonials about the Illyrian period are in many and they are clear. Research in Durres and Apolonia, Butrint and Ardenitza verify the Illyrian existence in Albanian territories. In its April 20 issue, National Geographic highlighted the project, funded in part by the National Geographic Society. The U.S.-Albanian team has found late sixth century B.C. Greek and early third century B.C. Roman ruins, as expected, along with a few things they did not expect. A few thousand things.
We spent the rest of the day helping out, carrying tables and such. We hiked up to the village's reservoir and took a long afternoon siesta. The evening we whiled away, reading and talking and playing with the neighborhood kids.

http://www.albanian.com Albania ("Land of the Eagle" in Albanian) is a country steeped in history. Present-day Albania traces its roots back to ancient Illyria, as well as to the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman Empires. At the intersection of various cultural, religious and historical forces, Albania combines the traditional with the modern in its architecture, art, literature, politics and culture.
The natural environment of Albania reflects its location on the Adriatic Sea: the climate is largely dry and warm from April through October and winters are generally (though not always!) mild and rainy. Miles and miles of beaches and small villages lie on the western coast of the country, while mountains and pastoral valleys form the inland landscape. Due to the long history of human habitation in the area, remains from the Illyrians, Romans, Ottomans and others dot villages and cities alike.

ADRIATIC SYMPOSIUM CELEBRATES WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY Butrint, Albania 5th June 2002 - An international symposium will today focus attention on World Environment Day as it begins examining the environmental conditions of the Adriatic Sea. The symposium is beginning in Albania, which faces some of the greatest environmental and social challenges in Europe, and will sail to five Adriatic countries during 5-10 June. The event, which is organized under the auspices of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of the Orthodox Church, brings together approximately 250 scientists, environmentalists, government and religious leaders. This is the fourth symposium held by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, who is sometimes known as 'the Green Patriarch'. "We come from many nations, ethnicities, faiths and professional commitments to join with the people of the Adriatic in the interest of preserving the blessing of the natural world," said Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. "I am most pleased that our voyage begins on World Environment Day and in Albania, whose beautiful coastline reminds us of the splendor of God's creation."

Konispol VI (Iron Age) INTRODUCTION Of all the periods of Albanian antiquity, the Stone Age has been the least systematically explored and is the least well understood. Frano Prendi, in his fifty-page Cambridge Ancient History The potential of the Konispol Cave to provide significant evidence for our understanding of the Stone Age environment and economy in southern Albania was clear; it was agreed that the project would turn its attention to questions which had not been asked previously by Albanian archaeologists. Several unanticipatedand, as it turned out, irresolvablelogistical problems related primarily to the unavailability of supplies and equipment in the country in the period immediately following the change in government of 1990-1991 severely hampered our recovery design, but permitted us to plan concretely for the 1993 season. In 1993 we instituted a recovery regime that included screening (half-inch mesh) of all earth removed from the trenches. In addition, under the direction of Dr. Julie Hansen, a regime of water sieving was established.
