Threats to the Survival of the Archaeological Site of Butrint
Until the early twentieth century, Butrint was covered in earth and thick vegetation from years of flooding and abandonment. In the late nineteen twenties, the Italians took great interest in Butrint and sent an archaeological team under the direction of Luigi Ugolini to carry out excavations there. Mussolini 's Fascist government sponsored this project, for Mussolini considered himself the new founder of Rome, the new Aeneas. Virgil recorded that Aeneas had stopped at Butrint on his way to found Rome; therefore, Mussolini sent archaeologists to trace Aeneas's steps and to tighten the spiritual connection between Rome and Butrint. Ugolini uncovered many of the site's most exceptional monuments, including the theater area and the baptistry. Following the liberation of Albania in 1944 from the occupation of Nazi Germany, Albanian archaeologists undertook an even more ambitious series of excavations. Their efforts culminated in the foundation of an independent Albanian Institute of Archaeology, which continues to carry out archaeological and conservation efforts at Butrint.

a new Code of Ethics for Museums. The Code
requires that museums should only acquire archaeological and ethnographic objects which have a secure documented ownership history that can be traced back to before 1970, unless they are judged by experts in the field involved to be of minor importance and not illicitly traded. This collaborative launch took place at a press conference held on 1 May in London and highlights the determination of the museums community in Britain to stamp out the illicit trade. It followed closely on the heels of a Ministerial announcement that the UK Government intends to accede to the 1970 UNESCO Convention by July. In the January/February 2002 issue of Minerva magazine its editor Dr Jerome Eisenberg drew attention to the fact that a conversation he had taken part in had been secretly recorded and published on a web site. The same web page also shows e-mails allegedly written by Dr Eisenberg where he calls into question the work of Dr Peter Northover, a leading archaeo-metallurgist (http://www.michelvanrijn.com/artnews/artnws-eisenberg.htm). Dr Northover, who has published widely on the subject of archaeometallurgy, is a Senior Research Fellow at the Department of Materials, University of Oxford. His own web site is at http://www. materials.ox.ac.uk/peoplepages/northover.html although it makes no mention of authentication work carried out for the antiquities trade.

Plikati and the Gorgopotamos Valley
The Gorgopotamos Valley (looking towards Gorgopotamos Village) previous pindos next The Gorgopotamos Valley comprises a series of fast flowing boulder scattered streams which drain of Mount Grammos, one of the highest peaks in Greece, which is situated on the Greek/Albanian border. Plikati is the highest village in the Gorgopotamos Valley and is situated at 1240 m. Arboreal vegetation is dominated by deciduous oaks (giving way to beech at around 1500 m upwards) on the less steep and west facing slopes, and by fir on the the steeper and east facing slopes. Lower down the valley, in the territories belonging to the neighbouring villages, deciduous oaks give way to hornbeams usually in the form of heavily cut and browsed scrub. (Halstead 1998). Presently there are around 80 permanent inhabitants (the majority of whom are elderly) living in Plikati. During the last century population levels fluctuated greatly. The highest officially recorded figure was 384 people in 1940 and the lowest in the early 1950`s when the village was temporarily abandoned whilst the last stages of the civil were being fought on Mt. Grammos.

The Croatian Language in
Liturgy
A Historical Review of the Use and Development of the Croatian
Language in Liturgy
Author: Anonymous (signed with initial V.) Croatian belongs to the old liturgical languages of the church. This is of particular interest since it is known that Croatia has been under the jurisdiction of the Roman Bishop, the Pope, and therefore within the Western Churc h, where, ever since the 4th century, Latin had been known as the only official language used in liturgy until the Vatican II (October 11, 1962 - December 8, 1965) when national modern languages were allowed to be used in the liturgy.
In the Eastern Church, the question of the language to be used in liturgy has not been as "strict" as in the Western where the sacred rule was respected and only three languages (Latin, Greek and Hebrew) were allowed in liturgy, although only Latin was practically used.
The Vatican, in several instances, permitted the use of the native languages in liturgy; however, such exceptions (permits to practice Roman Rite in Armenian, Albanian, Georgian, Arabian and Chinese) were restricted to the Epistles and the Gospels. In the Christian East, following the decline of the Greek language (4th century), parallel to koine, the two Eastern liturgical families (Alexandrine and Antiochian) with some restrictions, used native languages in all pertaining rites.
At the time of the arrival of the Croats (during the 7th century), the present Croatian lands were under divided and alternating rules of the patriarchs of Constantinople and Rome. The coastal towns and islands were under the rule of the Byzantine patriarch, while the rest of Croatia was under the papal jurisdiction. In 1054, with the split between the Eastern and Western Churches, all Croatian lands came under papal jurisdiction.

The fact that Kosovo Polje belonged to the Serbian State in the IX-X cent. has been most obviously archaeologically proved by the most ancient Serbian and Slav administrative testimony found at the Cecan fortification near Vucitrn. It is a shard of a jug used for the payment of taxes in wine, marked to a volume of six measuring units, denoted by means of notches and Glagolitic letters (G. Tomovic, Inscription glagolitique de Cecan, Revue historique, XXXVII, Institut d'histoure, Belgrade 1990, pp 19). Cecan was probably conquered by the emperor Samoil in his war against Serbia in cca. 988, when the Serbian duke Jovan Vladimir, the saint whose reliques have been preserved in the Orthodox temple at Elbasan, Albania, was taken prisoner. As far as is known, from among all the Serbian areas, apart from those of Montenegro and Herzegovina, Kosovo and Metohia is the one with the greatest number of churches that have been in continuous use for over a thousand years. The temples and churches founded in the VI-VII cent. and/or in the IX-XI cent., for instance those at Lipljan, Gracanica, Bogorodica Ljeviska at Prizren, and others, are still there; Turkish and Austrian devastations in the XVI and the XVII cent. have left the remains of Banjska, near Kosovska Mitrovica, of Studenica Hvostanska, near Pec, of Arhandjeli Prizrenski, etc.

76. Introduction
In 1993 Lord Rothschild and Lord Sainsbury set up the Butrint Foundation to assistthe albanian authorities with the conservation and archaeology of the site.
http://www.butrintfound.dial.pipex.com/introductionframe.html
Introduction Butrint is a special archaeological site - a microcosm of 3000 years of Mediterranean history from the age of the archaic Greeks until the Venetians. The walled city of Butrint covers an area of approximately 16 hectares. However, at times in its history the city has extended over a greater area, encompassing a large expanse of land on the opposite side of the Vivari channel. There are two principal parts to the site: the acropolis and the lower city. The acropolis is a long, saddle-backed hill rising up to 42m above sea level at its east end, its steep sides accentuated by a circuit of walls, which separate it from the natural and artificial terraces gathered around the flanks of the hill. The lower city occupies the lower-lying contours of the hill reaching down to the edge of the Vivari channel. The most obvious monument outside the city walls, on the opposite side of the channel, is the triangular fortress, which by 1805, when Colonel Martin Leake visited Butrint, was the nucleus of the latest settlement. Beyond the fortress to the east lie substantial remains of later Republican to Byzantine date. Excavation of the Butrint site was undertaken between the wars by the Italian mission led by C Luigi Ugolini. After the Second World War, his work was carried forward by the Albanian archaeological service. After the collapse of the Communist regime in 1990 conservation and archaeological work came to an end for lack of resources. In 1993 Lord Rothschild and Lord Sainsbury set up the Butrint Foundation to assist the Albanian authorities with the conservation and archaeology of the site. In 1994 the Butrint Foundation reached a five-year agreement with the Albanian
