The Pacific Coast

The British Columbia coast is indented by coves and protected from storms by Vancouver Island. It has the most even, comfortable climate of any Canadian region. Vancouver Island's west coast is rained on frequently as a result of the coastal layout, which gives it a temperate rain forest climate. Because of this, the island's west coast has the oldest and tallest trees in Canada: Douglas firs 90 meters high and Western Red Cedars 1,300 years old. The Cordillera
From British Columbia to the Alberta border the land is rugged, agressively styled with mountains and plateaus. Here the Rocky Mountains, the Coastal Mountains and other ranges run north to south. Canada's highest peaks are in the St. Elias Mountains, an extension of the Cordillera that reaches north into the Yukon and Alaska. The British Columbia interior is topographically convoluted, it varies from alpine snowfields to massive valleys where hot and dry conditions are typical.

Canada is rich in fossils, especially the provinces of Alberta and British Columbia. There have been many dinosaurs, Ichthyosaurs, and other types of fossils found there. Many dinosaurs have been named after Canadian cities, provinces, and rock formations, including Albertosaurus (a large carnivore related to T. rex found near Alberta), Edmontosaurus (a duck-billed dinosaur found in the Edmonton rock formation), Columbosauripus (fossilized Coelurosaur trackways found in early-Cretaceous sediment from British Columbia), and Edmontonia (an Ankylosaur found in th Edmonton rock formation near Alberta). Lambeosaurus (a duck-billed dinosaur) was named after Lawrence Lambe, a Canadian paleontolgist.

BASIC INFO. GEOGRAPHY GOVERNMENT ... PEOPLE Color CANADA Occupying the northern half of the North American continent, Canada has a land mass of 9 970 610 km2, making it the second-largest country in the world after Russia. From east to west, Canada encompasses six time zones.
Because of the harsh northern climate, only 12 percent of the land is suitable for agriculture. Thus, most of the population of 30 million live within a few hundred kilometres of the southern border, where the climate is milder, in a long thin band stretching between the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans.
Climate: Canada is divided into seven regions, each with a very different landscape and climate.
1. The Pacific Coast Bathed by warm, moist Pacific air currents, the British Columbia coast, indented by deep fiords and shielded from Pacific storms by Vancouver Island, has the most moderate climate of Canada's regions.
Vancouver Island's west coast receives an exceptional amount of rain, giving it a temperate rain forest climate. Although it does not contain the diversity of species of a tropical rain forest, the island's west coast does have the oldest and tallest trees in Canada: Western Red Cedars 1300 years old and Douglas firs 90 m high.
2. The Cordillera From British Columbia to just east of the Alberta border the land is young, with rugged mountains and high plateaus. Signs of geologically-recent volcanic activity can be seen in Garibaldi Provincial Park in southern British Columbia and at Mount Edziza in the north.

http://www.uni-marburg.de/geographie/virtual/english/canada/module/m2/u5.htm
Unit 5: The Canadian Geography of Energy
(Alfred Hecht)
Teaching aim : This unit describes some basic elements of the energy sector in Canada, its potentials and its risks. The aim is to provide the student with a better understanding of the different types of energy resources, to stimulate his or her sensitivity in the field of energy consumption, to look at resource potentials and at the sustainability of energy resources.
Keywords : Oil, natural gas, coal, hydro, nuclear energy, tar sands, natural resources, reserves, energy consumption, exports, imports, "energy rich" and "energy poor" provinces.
Per capita energy consumption in Canada ] is very high when compared to other nations of the world. It is approximately 50% higher than that of the US and about 60 times higher than that of India. Canada has a high per capita consumption for a number of reasons: cold winters and hot summers; long travel distances; a high number of resource extracting and raw material processing/manufacturing industries that require much energy; and, a high public demand for comfort. Canada also has substantial energy resources, which means that there is little pressure to conserve or reduce energy use. These reasons not withstanding, Canadians are viewed by the world as wasters of energy. Canada is a major producer as well as exporter of various energy resources ] - oil, natural gas, coal, hydro, and other energy sources such as wood, solar, wind and nuclear. In the second half of the 1990s, Canada exported approximately $23 billion worth of energy per year, mainly in the form of natural gas, oil, coal and electricity. This represents about 7% of all
