    Introduction
One of the ways forward for arable farming would be to develop new outlets to the non-food industry. Many European countries efforts have been undertaken, in the last 10 years, to find or to develop new products. Most of these efforts aimed at co-operation with industry. Industry, as a whole, has an abundance of raw materials and has no immediate need to invest in technology to process and apply new agricultural feedstocks. Some sectors of industry are closely monitoring developments, or are already developing products from agricultural feedstocks, where new characteristics can be introduced and because it is profitable to shift from bulk productions to specialties. The agricultural feedstocks are often better degradable than the mineral resources and the industry is aware of the increasing demand for non-polluting production methods and products. From about 1986, research institutes and universities, in the Netherlands, entered the industrial crops and products field and strengthened the co-operation with processing industry. Multidisciplinary ventures aimed at evaluation of all links of the production-chains: from breeding, crop physiology and cropping practices to processing, applications and market studies. The first major initiative was on new technology of carbohydrates, a traditional feedstock in industry. The second was on inulin, a promising fructose polymer from chicory or Jerusalem artichoke. Next programmes were on fibres for the paper industry, new fatty acids for the oleochemical industry and carvone from caraway as biological sprouting inhibitor for potatoes. These were four-year programmes which are currently being evaluated on economic and technological feasibility.

    Sir Charles Fitzpatrick
Hon. Charles Fitzpatrick, Member of Parliament and Solicitor General of Canada.
    (December 19, 1853 - June 17, 1942)
The Right Honourable Charles Fitzpatrick played an active role in the evolution of Western Canada's political situation. In 1905, he took part, as the federal government representative, in the negotiations that led to the creation of the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan Charles Fitzpatrick's legal career was always as important as his political career. In 1885, he won renown as defence counsel for Louis Riel , then accused of treason by John A. Macdonald 's Conservative government. In 1897, he represented the Dominion of Canada before the London Privy Council in a case involving the fisheries. A member of the Liberal Party, Fitzpatrick sat in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec from 1890 to 1896, and in the House of Commons from 1896 to 1906. He was solicitor general (1896) and minister of justice (from 1902 to 1906) in Sir Wilfrid Laurier's government. It was as solicitor general in 1897 that Fitzpatrick met with Pope Leon XIII and succeeded in obtaining from the supreme pontiff the envoy of Cardinal Merry del Val to settle the issue of schools in Manitoba In 1906, Fitzpatrick resigned from politics and was named chief justice of the Supreme Court of Canada. When he resigned from that position in 1918, he was made lieutenant-governor of Quebec, a post in which he remained until 1923.

ASH DEMANDS THAT TOBACCO COMPANIES DISCLOSE THEIR PROVINCIAL LOBBYISTS
    Tuesday, March 25, 2003
Edmonton - ASH is delivering registered letters to the CEOs of Canada's largest tobacco companies urging them to reveal their provincial lobbyists following a CBC television investigation into the sudden demise of proposed tobacco legislation last fall. The story revealed that the tobacco lobby was working secretly behind the scenes to derail a tough tobacco bill that was championed by health minister Gary Mar. The CBC reported that Premier Klein's former executive assistant and chief of staff, Rod Love, has been working as a consultant for Canada's largest tobacco company, Imperial Tobacco. The CBC also reported that Hal Danchilla, a former communications director for the Alberta government, has been working on behalf of cigar retailers in the province. "The tobacco companies have a long track record of working deviously behind the scenes at the highest levels of power to undermine public health" said Dr. Roger Hodkinson, honorary chairman. "We demand that these companies reveal all of their provincial lobbyists if they are truly committed to reforming their image as corporate pariahs" he added. "The public deserves to know who is working on behalf of tobacco companies and their connections to key policy makers within the Alberta government". In the CBC investigation, Dave Laundy, the western vice-president for the Canadian Tobacco Manufacturers Council admitted that the tobacco industry "employs people in every provincial capital to keep them abreast of what's going on in provincial government" and to collect "political intelligence".
