U.S. Drug, Alcohol Rates Remain Unchanged
Number Of Those Driving Under Influence Drops
WASHINGTON, 11:48 a.m. EDT October 5, 2001 The government reports drug and alcohol abuse in America was essentially unchanged last year. The 2000 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse was released Thursday by the U.S. Health and Human Services Department. About 6 percent of those over 12 years old or 14 million Americans were illegal drug users last year. An annual survey shows last year's findings were not significantly different from 1999 in overall drug use or in use of any of the major illegal drugs. The rate of alcohol use among youths aged 12 to 20 and the general population has remained relatively flat for the past several years. Almost half of Americans 46.6 percent aged 12 and older reported being current drinkers of alcohol in the 2000 survey. This translates to about 104 million people. Both the rate of alcohol use and number of drinkers were nearly the same in 2000 as in 1999. However, there was some good news.

Girls, Boys Use Drugs For Different Reasons
Report Authors Urge Overhaul In Prevention Programs
POSTED: 5:33 p.m. EST February 5, 2003
Girls are more vulnerable to substance abuse and addiction than boys, according to a report released Wednesday. The study, conducted by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University, also found that girls use cigarettes, alcohol and other drugs for reasons different from boys. The three-year study, compiled into a 231-page report, was underwritten by the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation. Researchers found that despite recent declines in youth substance use, more than one-fourth of high school girls currently smoke cigarettes, 45 percent drink alcohol, more than one-fourth binge drink, and 20 percent use marijuana. Younger girls are smoking and drinking like boys. High school girls are almost as likely as boys to use cocaine and inhalants. More girls are using substances at earlier ages, nearly as early as boys. But girls suffer consequences beyond those of boys, according to the report. "The findings from this study cry out for a fundamental overhaul of public health prevention programs," said Joseph Califano Jr., CASA president and former U.S. secretary of Health, Education and Welfare. "Unisex prevention programs largely developed without regard to gender, often with males in mind fail to influence millions of girls and young women.

Your Health Preparing to Travel Abroad
Good health is a prerequisite to an enjoyable stay abroad and crucial while you are traveling. You may be exposed to unfamiliar climates, food, medicine and health care systems. In many cases, a good measure of common sense and a healthy respect for your own body (and its limitations) will help to avoid medical problems. A few preliminary precautions can spare you a good deal of unpleasantness. ISEP Medical Form
All ISEP participants are required to complete the ISEP Medical Form—Student Self-Assessment included in your acceptance packet. A certain amount of stress due to culture shock or the change in living conditions and facilities is a normal part of the exchange experience. However, in some cases, such stresses may aggravate disabilities or illnesses that you have under control at home. The purpose of this form is to create an awareness of any health issues that you should take into consideration before going abroad. The information you provide in the assessment will be used primarily to guide ISEP and your host coordinator in making appropriate arrangements for you as an ISEP participant.

Dateline: 06/28/99 Findings of a new study, conducted over a 21-year period, seems to contradict recent reports that moderate consumption of alcohol has significant health benefits. In fact, the opposite could be true. A report published in the British Medical Journal indicates that men who have five drinks a day are twice as likely to die from stroke than non drinkers. Those men who drank an average of only two drinks a day had a higher risk of dying from all causes, compared with men who consumed fewer alcoholic beverages. The 21-year study was comprised of 5,766 men aged 35 to 64 from various workplaces in Glasgow, Clydebank and Grangemouth, Scotland. "The overall association between alcohol consumption and death is unfavorable for men drinking over 11 drinks a week and does not support the promotion of increased drinking for reasons of health," conclude a team of researchers led by Carole L. Hart, a research fellow at the department of public health at the University of Glasgow, Scotland.

Alcohol Awareness Month Message: Abuse Is Still a Major Concern April is designated Alcohol Awareness Month by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD). Nearly 14 million people - about 1 in every 13 adults - are problem drinkers, despite ongoing efforts by healthcare professionals to promote responsible use of alcohol. More than one half of all adults have a family history of alcoholism or problem drinking. And alcoholism costs U.S. employers about $100 billion each year, due to employees missed time at work to recover from drinking alcohol. April 5 will kick off the annual month-long observance with an "Alcohol-Free Weekend." The event, which offers alternate activities to drinking alcohol, is a community-based celebration, sponsored by such recreational organizations as YMCAs, museums, roller skating rinks, movie theaters, athletic teams, musical groups, and many others. The weekend is designed to help everyone think about his or her own alcohol use, promote recovery for those with alcohol abuse problems, and heighten awareness of alcoholism as a national problem.

Alcohol, Good For Your Health?
Proposition: To counter the current influence of the medical community with regard to alcohol. Introduction Regarding the text... Aaron and his sons had just been consecrated for their duties. Offerings, according to the instructions of God, are prepared and God consumes them to show His approval and to confirm the priesthood in the eyes of the people. Two priests, Nadab and Abihu, then offered incense to God. They used “strange fire” and were devoured. We then read some instruction that surely was given to help keep this tragedy from recurring. Read Lev. 10:8-11 I’m sure we’ve all read or seen something on the most recent studies about the effects of alcohol. (“One drink a day is good for you. Help you live longer.”) But, is that all there is to it? Millions of consciences have been eased by these reports. Science says its good for you. Does the Bible really say NO? Let’s look at the rest of the story. This hour I would like for us to consider the consequences of that one drink a day. Discussion I.

Reducing The Risk of Breast Cancer
The Issue
Breast cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in women. While the causes of breast cancer are not fully understood, research shows that you can lower your risk of developing the disease or dying from it by minimizing lifestyle and environmental risk factors and through breast cancer screening.
Background
From the 1960s the number of breast cancer cases grew slowly, but have stayed fairly constant since 1993. One in nine women in Canada will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. About 20,500 Canadian women will develop breast cancer, and 5,400 will die from it in 2002.
Risks of Developing Breast Cancer
Scientific researchers are not certain of the direct causes of breast cancer, but have identified some proven risk factors as well as others that are suspected or possible. You should note that these risk factors increase the chances that you might develop breast cancer, not that you will. Even those who are at 'high risk' may never get the disease. Also, having breast implants to change your breast size or shape, or to rebuild a breast after surgery, is

Screening for Colorectal Cancer
The Issue
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer in Canada. Regular screening can diagnose the disease at an early stage when it is more treatable, therefore reducing mortality.
Background
Although the number of people affected with CRC is declining, it is still the third most common form of cancer, after breast and lung cancer in women, and prostate and lung cancer in men. Approximately 17,600 new cases will be diagnosed in Canada this year, with approximately 6,500 Canadians dying from CRC. CRC is a malignant tumour that develops over a period of time (at least 10 years) on the bowel wall, before invading the wall and moving on to other organs. Approximately two-thirds of these cancers are found in the large intestine and one-third in the rectum. CRC usually develops from benign tumours or polyps found in the bowel. Symptoms of CRC depend on the lesion's location, type, extent and complications, and may include:

To raise a glass 'to your health' or not?
Research may find the answer is 'yes'
October 18, 1996
Web posted at: 7:20 p.m. EDT From Correspondent Eugenia Halsey WASHINGTON (CNN) Is moderate drinking good for your health? Nearly three dozen studies suggest that a few drinks a week could help prevent heart disease. Now, the government wants to know if alcohol can also stave off brittle bones and help protect older women from other diseases. To learn more about alcohol's effects, a government agency, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, has awarded more than $2 million of taxpayer money in grants for scientific study of the question. The NIAAA was founded in 1970 to deal with the serious health problems caused by heavy drinking. Its decision to check out the flip side, whether light drinking can actually do some good, is not in conflict with its original mission, said Dr. Mary Dufour, deputy director of the agency. "Our mission is research, and so we think this is an important thing to check out," she said. The $2 million-plus grants will fund 15 new studies on the effects of moderate drinking. Some of the money went to the Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, D.C., where researcher Nicolas Guzman is trying to learn how alcohol may help prevent heart disease.
