French state racism kept Algerians at the bottom of society, working as servants, unskilled labourers and peasants, while only French citizens or other whites were allowed skilled jobs and positions in the social institutions (from the police to the government). The FLN was waging a guerrilla war , much like their ancestor and hero, Abd al-Qadir, who led a guerilla struggle for 13 years at the outset of French rule in 1834. Early Algerian History The earliest known inhabitants of certain areas of Algeria were cattleherds and hunters living in the Al Hajjar region between 8,000 and 2,000BC. These may have been tribal Berbers. Phoenicians settled some of the coastal areas of Algeria from their north-African state of Carthage which was in modern day Tunisia. The first Algerian kingdom was established by the Berber chieftain Massinissa during the Punic Wars between Rome and Carthage which took place between the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC. Massinissa reigned over his kingdom of Numidia from 202-148BC and his dynasty lasted until 106BC when his grandson Jugurtha became a Roman client. As part of the Roman Empire Numidia flourished, becoming known as the ' granary of Rome'. Algeria Algeria is an ancient country with a history that extends back several thousand years to the time of the Phoenicians. The Romans, followed by the Germanic Vandal tribes and the Byzantines all ruled the area. When Islam grew mighty in the 8th century A.D., the Berbers of Algeria were converted to that religion and a unique civilization flourished. Some eight centuries later, Spain conquered Algiers and other cities but was driven out by Barbarossa who brought Algeria into the Turkish Ottoman Empire. From this point, piracy became an important money-making tool for the country, so much so that by 1800, the US, England, and France joined in an effort to combat piracy in the Mediterranean. Ottoman rule over the country was brought to an end by the French in 1830. In 1848, following an Islamic rebellion, France made Algeria a legal part of France. In the mid-1950s, a guerilla effort arose to oust the French led by the FLN (Front de Liberation Nationale) and in 1962, independence was declared. Immediately, about a million colonists left Algeria for France. Times have been turbulent for Algeria since independence, including close relations with the Soviet Union and a struggle between fundamentalist Islamists and the military. Since 1992, over 40,000 people have died due to civil unrest and assassinations. In 1999, elections were held; only one candidate remained in the race: Abdelazziz Bouteflika. His government reached agreement with the Islamic rebels in September 1999.

Algeria: Brief Background to the Novel, Fantasia Maghreb = Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Mauritania and Libya The term means “Island” with three “seas”: The Sahara (sea of sand), the Atlantic, and the Mediterranean The “Berbers” are the indigenous people of coastal No Africa. By 1200 BC they had domesticated the horse and used it to conquer other, blacker, peoples of the region through killing, enslaving, intermarrying. Known for their dramatic horse displays, called fantasias. Berber tribes are colonized by (and intermarried with) a series of invaders/traders/muslim missionaries from Syria and Arabia. By the 1830 arrival of French, Algeria is almost entirely Arab speaking (but many also speak Arab-berber dialects), Muslim, and rural, ruled over by an insular Turkish oligarchy that dominates Algiers but is weak in the rural hinterland and that never “integrates” with the indigenous population. The French defeat of the Algerian Turkish government is part of the broader European defeat of the Ottoman empire in Europe and the Near East as well as part of the expansion of Western Europe into North Africa (the English in Egypt, the Italian in Libya, and so forth). At first, the French plan to colonize only the coast of Algeria, focusing mainly on the city of Algiers.

One was his scholarly eminence; the anthropologist was France's leading authority on Aztec civilization. The other was a very public disagreement with his old friend Charles de Gaulle over independence for Algeria (which M. Soustelle opposed vehemently). So when a spy novel portrayed an intellectual named Soustelle plotting to assassinate the French president, it was decidedly more than a coincidence particularly since the character was shown making jokes about human sacrifice. M. Soustelle filed a libel suit against the novel's publisher, and won. In due course, the whole unpleasant matter was forgotten until now. M. Algeria's land has seen many regimes, all of which wanted to remain eternal. Many attempts at assimilation have been made throughout the centuries. Each time, Algeria has risen up to fight the invaders. set up by iron and fire, the colonial occupation was only established after many long years of war, and this was followed by a constant fight against it. The resistance covered various form, local revolts or revolutions covering a whole region, or the constitution of political movements, more or less homogeneous and coherent, all manifestations came from the force and will to live in Algerian people and its desire to establish its own personality and assume its own destiny in complete sovereignty. Algerian history has been marked by combat and sacrifice and demonstrates this will. Each generation of Algerian people has paid a high price in the cause of liberty and independance. The earliest known inhabitants were the Berbers, who became established acros North Africa from about 3000 BC. About the 3rd century BC, Numidia, as the Berber kingdom was called, came under attack from the Carthaginians and later the Romans. Roman rule ended when Vandals from Spain swept acros the country in AD431. In the following century, the area was partly conquered by the Byzantines. Successive waves of Arabs wept over the country in the 7th century and introduced the Islamic religion and the Arabic language. Islam soon became dominant but the Berber language survived mainly in the mountains in the east of the country. From 1519, the Ottman Turks held the coastlands, but their control was, at best, weak.
