Alumni reach out to not-for-profit organizations Princeton NJ The members of the class of 1956, who have reached an age when they are beginning to retire or consider retiring, have developed a project to put their years of accumulated wisdom to good use. The as-yet-unnamed program, part of the ReachOut '56 group, will pair members of the class of '56 with schools and not-for-profit organizations that could use a little help. "We're endeavoring to marry the time, talent and energy of our classmates who are now about 67 and off the payroll with not-for-profits who could use a few gray hairs of wisdom," said Jack Fritts, a New York lawyer and one of the coordinators of the effort. "There are endless not-for-profits out there that are being run by somebody who has a wonderful vision but doesn't know how to build an infrastructure, organize a board or do the financials," he pointed out. "And we have a bunch of people who know how to do those things and want to create some new relationships and not feel like they're just watching the grass grow." Wide range of advice The program will offer guidance on any topic in which its alumni have expertise. Advice on business tasks like bookkeeping, buying insurance and maintaining financial statements will probably be in high demand. The program also plans to involve alumni in mentoring teachers and school children.

Princeton is proud of this record of service, and as the cover of the next issue of the Princeton Alumni Weekly will show, at the October Charter Day celebration we installed a plaque on our front campus to recognize publicly all our alumni who have helped Princeton give concrete meaning to our informal motto, "In the Nation's Service and in the Service of All Nations." I would like here to focus attention on the collective community service efforts of our alumni as represented by the 250X250 (pronounced 250 by 250) Challenge. This initiative was conceived and developed by the Alumni Council's Community Service Committee in response to the University's request for proposals to mark Princeton's 250th anniversary. As Liz Duffy '88, chair of the committee, explains, the goal was to promote additional community service projects by classes and regional associations, and the challenge was to engage alumni organizations in at least 250 such projects. By Alumni Day ahead of the Reunions '97 deadline our alumni easily met the challenge. The hope is that many of these projects will be sustained, thus representing an enduring legacy of the 250th Anniversary. I wish to congratulate, and to thank, each member of the Princeton community who is helping to make the 250X250 Challenge a lasting success. While it is difficult in this summary to give a fully satisfactory sense of the range of projects that our alumni have organized, I would like to give you examples of the ways that Princetonians are using this initiative to make a difference in their communities.

High School students return to Dartmouth for a week of service - this time given, not received August 24, 2002. In the summer of 2001, a new program called Summer Enrichment at Dartmouth (SEAD) brought ninth graders from urban high schools in Boston and Philadelphia and from rural Canaan, N.H., to spend a week at Dartmouth learning skills in leadership, scholarship and community service. In addition to a new group of ninth graders who completed participation in the program this summer, SEAD II - an extension of SEAD - brought most of last year's participants back to campus for another week, this time to develop and apply their individual skills toward service to others. Twenty-six of the original 29 participants from last summer attended the program, which began July 22 and ran through July 30. Their time was divided between participating in community service projects in the Upper Valley, writing a research paper on leadership, and engaging in various "perspective shifting" activities, which include discussions with noted speakers. The SEAD program is a joint venture of Dartmouth's Tucker Foundation and the Education Department, and also receives assistance from the Barnet Family Fund and a dozen alumni organizations.

Jan. 15, 2003 I-Men's Association presents Z.G. Clevenger Awards Four standout IU athletes have been awarded Z.G. Clevenger Awards by the I-Men's Association. Thomas E. Blackburn, of South Bend, Ind., Howard C. Buickel, of Santa Claus, Ind., Ernest S. Kovatch, of South Bend, Ind., and Thomas M. McGlasson, of Bloomington, Ind., received their awards at a ceremony on Nov. 15 at the DeVault Alumni Center in Bloomington, Ind. Blackburn began his outstanding golf career as a youth in South Bend. After enrolling at IU, Blackburn lettered in golf during the 1944-45 season. Upon graduation, he joined the Navy and became a pilot, which allowed him to golf in Hawaii and fly fish in Alaska. He went on to enjoy a long career at Prudential-Bache Securities in South Bend, until his retirement. Buickel began his athletic career as a student at Booneville High School where he lettered in football, basketball, and baseball. After serving in the army for three years, Buickel enrolled at IU where he lettered in baseball during the 1946-47 and 1947-48 seasons. After college, he played baseball with the Fort Lauderdale Braves and the Florida International League. In 1950, Buickel became a teacher and coach, and eventually a school administrator. Kovatch began his outstanding athletic career at Riley High School where he participated in football, basketball and baseball. After enrolling at IU, he earned letters as a football player in 1948 and 1949. In 1950 he earned another letter and also served as team captain. After graduating, Kovatch served in the Korean War where he was a prisoner of war for 11 months. He later enjoyed a 37 year career as a teacher, coach, and counselor for the South Bend school system.
