Vitamin E Seen as Alzheimer's Foe!

Wednesday, June 26, 2002

Ronald Kotulak, Tribune Science Reporter

Eating plenty of foods rich in vitamin E may dramatically reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease, according to the first population studies to rigorously examine the role that diet plays in protecting against the mind-robbing disorder.

Reporting in a recent issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers from Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center said subjects who consumed the highest levels of the antioxidant vitamin E reduced their risk of Alzheimer's disease by about 70 percent.

In a separate JAMA article, scientists f rom the Erasmus Medical Center in t he Netherlands found that a high vitamin E intake from food reduced Alzheimer's risk by slightly more than 40 percent.

The Netherlands group, which followed 5,395 older people for six years, also found that smokers gained the highest level of protection with vitamin E and that vitamin C was somewhat protective against t he disease, Dr. Marianne J. Englehart reported. The Rush team showed a weaker link with vitamin C.

The vitamin E effect was seen in all age, sex and race categories, including people with heart disease, said epidemiologist Martha Clare Morris, who headed Rush's four-year follow-up study of 815 elderly residents in the Chicago Health and Aging Project.

Book Review - Health Defence Author: Dr Paul Clayton. Review by Dr Mark Draper Introduction I have been looking for a book that combines the information obtained from scientific studies with practical guidelines that could be used by practitioners or patients without being overcomplicated or, conversely, too simplistic. Book Content Dr Paul Clayton's book looks at the triad of Lifestyle, Diet and Supplements (including Functional foods) as determinants of a persons 'Health Defence'. Starting, in part one, from the premise that life expectancy has not changed significantly despite recent advances in pharmaceutical medicine and that the main degenerative diseases are caused by malnutrition, he logically concludes that we require a preventative nutritional approach to combat further decline in wellness and years of chronic illness in middle and old age. In part two, Dr Clayton develops his arguments for using nutrients that boost our defences and identifies nine main classes to reduce our risk of becoming victims of these chronic degenerative diseases.

University of California at Berkeley researchers have just released new data indicating men who smoke have children with three to four times more cancer than men who don’t smoke. Bruce Ames, who leads the study, says that’s because the DNA of their sperm is damaged. Ames: Because smoke is filled with nitrogen oxides, which are powerful oxidizing agents and they deplete all your anti-oxidants, vitamin C goes down, vitamin E goes down. 107 So the two together, smoking and bad diet, are not only mutating the cells in your body and giving you cancer, but they’re mutating the DNA of your sperm and giving your children cancer. Today is January 31, 2001 Those who go on the Hart Dietary Procedure Plan to eliminate the effects of Alzheimer's disease, please mark a calendar in case you call to discuss what effects are to be expected when on the diet. Knowing how long one has been on the diet is important, and be prepared to describe in some detail what your diet has been and currently is. Since the acid is a normal chemical in the blood it will be 5-8 days after beginning the diet before your blood will be clean. If you have blood checks weekly or bi- weekly, on the visit for blood work after day 5, expect to hear the doctor or lab technician describe the results as looking much improved. It will happen. As background, to eliminate the reader thinking this is something I just invented, it is a matter of record that June of 1996, I wrote a personal letter to a prominent member of the news media whose spouse had been diagnosed with beginning Alzheimer's disease. I explained that the diet cleans the blood keeping abnormal cells in solution and " controls plaque and fat in the blood".

However the person may continue to function for longer. Causes Many people develop Alzheimer's as they grow older, however the disease is not a normal process of growing old. The gradual loss of brain function that characterises Alzheimer's disease seems to be due to two main forms of neural damage: Nerve fibres grow tangled, and protein deposits known as plaques build up in the affected tissue. Researchers are not yet sure why or how this occurs. Another theory suggests that aluminium from cookware, for example may lead to Alzheimer's. But this has not been proven.

Have you ever walked into a room and forgotten why you were there, or met an old friend whose name you couldn't remember, or misplaced your glasses and then found them perched on your head? Don't worry too much. Everyone experiences occasional lapses in "cognitive function" (the clinical term that refers to memory and mental acuity). The parahippocampal cortex part of the brain is thought to feed information to the hippocampus, which is where memories are established and also which deteriorates in Alzheimer's disease. Clickable Regions Although many authorities consider such lapses a normal consequence of growing older, other factors such as too much stress, early Alzheimers Symptoms, lack of sleep, or poor nutrition can also contribute to a fuzzy mental focus. What's the answer? Whether you're an aging Baby Boomer, a student anxious about class performance, or a worker who needs to stay especially sharp on the job, taking certain supplements may help maintain your mental acuity. Optimal brain function is dependent on transmission and reception of signals across the synapses (the gaps between nerve cells in the brain). These messages are carried across synapses by natural body chemicals called neurotransmitters. If the presence of neurotransmitters is insufficient or temporarily depleted, thinking, memory and other brain functions may be impaired until the brain chemistry is normalized. In severe deficiencies, clinical depression may even result.

.c The Associated Press LONDON (AP) - You've heard it before: If you want to remain healthy, eat more fruit and vegetables and less red meat. But scientists now say such a diet also may help prevent Alzheimer's disease. In fact, mounting evidence indicates the risk factors for heart disease - high blood pressure, diabetes, excess weight, high cholesterol and lack of exercise - may play a role in Alzheimer's. New studies to be presented next week at an international Alzheimer's conference in Stockholm establish the big picture for the first time, giving scientists a better understanding of how to reduce the likelihood of the disease. Over the last few years, hints of a connection between Alzheimer's and lifestyle have emerged, but scientists have become increasingly interested in investigating such a link and are just now beginning to realize that what is good for the heart may also be good for the brain. Alzheimer's is a degenerative brain disease that causes memory loss, disorientation, depression and decay of bodily functions. The disease afflicts about 12 million people worldwide, including more than 4 million Americans. It is increasing so fast that more than 22 million people worldwide will be affected by 2025, experts predict.

This tragic disease robs us of our life's memories and our accumulated knowledge and wisdom. It is sad to think that Ronald Reagan does not even remember that he was once the president of the USA Today approximately half of all people who live beyond the age of 90 will develop Alzheimer's disease. We still do not know the exact cause for this disease and we do not as yet have a cure. Indeed this devastating disease has baffled scientists ever since it was first described in 1906 by Dr Alois Alzheimer. Alzheimer's disease is a strongly inheritable condition. Research suggests that between 50 & 75% of a person's risk of developing Alzheimer's, is determined by the genes. There are probably several such genes, each with a different action. The exact effects of these genes are not as yet well understood. However we do know that a normal variant of the APOE gene called "E-4", accelerates the process of developing late-onset Alzheimers.
The E-4 link is powerful enough that, if someone is predisposed to Alzheimers, we can predict the age of onset of the disease if we know the number of E-4 genes (0, 1, or 2) that he or she has inherited.
