The National Museum of American History, Behring Center, has four museum stores. The main store is located on the lower level across from the cafeteria. It features a wide selection of books, music, toys, posters and exhibit related giftware. It also sells reproductions of newspapers featuring headlines from historical events. Two stores are located on the second floor near the National Mall entrance. Once exclusively features music from Smithsonian Folkways and other selections representing a range of American genres, from bluegrass to be-bop. Across the hall, visitors can create their own dog tags or purchase cameras, gifts and other merchandise. The American Presidency exhibit store, on the third floor outside the American Presidency exhibition, features thematic reproductions, jewelry, toys, books, music, videos, and other presidential mementos. All four stores are open during Museum hours, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m and are closed December 25.

Feedback American History General Lewis Lawrence Griffin contributed by Lu Hickey DURING THE WAR YEARS OAK HILL CEMETERY Oak Hill Cemetery was a part of Lewis Lawrence Griffin’s original plan for the city. Many persons crucial for the establishment of Griffin and Spalding County are buried there. Nationally known figures buried in Oak Hill include James S. Boyton, governor of Georgia after the death of Alexander Stephens, a hero of the Confederate navy, John McIntosh Kell and Martha Eleanora Holliday, Doc’s sister who died in infancy. The cemetery is one place to walk through Griffin’s history. STONEWALL CONFEDERATE CEMETERY AND GRIFFIN’S MEMORIAL PARK Many who died in the battles of Atlanta and Jonesboro were left without a proper burial. Around 1867, a group of women organized to form the Ladies Memorial Aid Society to create a cemetery for the fallen soldiers. They, and other volunteers, went to Lovejoy’s Station to collect remains. Over 500 Confederate dead and 1 Union soldier were interred, marble headstones were acquired and a monument was dedicated on August 17, 1867. Monuments for the dead of the Revolutionary War, both World Wars, the Korean and Vietnam Wars, and for the women who nursed soldiers in Griffin during the Civil War are also located in the Stonewall Confederate Cemetery and Memorial Park. The cemetery and monuments are located on East Taylor Street across from the Flint River Regional Library.

Clans Tartans History Travel ... Feedback American History General John McArthur Born in the village of Erskine on the River Clyde on November 17th 1826. He learnt his fathers trade as a blacksmith. He emigrated to America at the age of twenty-three and settled in Chicago. There he became a manager in a Chicago Iron Works and at the start of the Civil War, became a Captain of a militia company (Chicago Highland Guards), and would rise to the rank of Brevet Major General during the war. His assignments throughout the war were as follows:- Colonel, 12th Illinois (May 1861), named the Colonel of a three month regiment, he managed to re-enlist it for a three year full term on August 1st 1861. He commanded 1st Brigade, 2nd Division in Missouri and Tennessee during 1862 and was promoted to Brigadier General USV, on March 21, 1862 and led various units until July, 1865. He led a Brigade at Fort Donelson and was wounded in the foot at Shiloh. He briefly commanded a division but was again in brigade command during the Corinth, Mississippi operations. Not present at Luka or Corinth, he took part in the Vicksburg Campaign. Brevetted Major General for Nashville, he participated in operations against Mobile before being mustered out on 24th August 1865. An article from the Louisville Daily Journal dated Wednesday November 27th, gives the following description of the 12th Illinois's Regimental National Colours.
