This is precisely the tension that appears in the international programs of the Business School and the Law School (discussed above in sections A-2a and A-2e ) and to some extent it plays out in one of the broad differences between the humanities, which have (with notable exceptions, of course) traditionally been organized according to linguistic and cultural groups or areas (e.g., the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations and the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations), and those of the social sciences, which are generally organized according to cross-cultural topics such as Political Science or Economics. It is true that a number of Social Sciences departments remain interested in developing expertise in specific cultures and regions, but in the last few decades work has focused with increasing intensity on topical studies, a development that will be discussed further in connection with the area study centers (see below

PAIN DISORDERS THAT ARE CONFUSED WITH TMJ TEMPORAL TENDINITIS
Temporal tendinitis has been called "The Migraine Mimic" because so many symptoms are similar to migraine headache pain. Symptoms include: TMJ pain, ear pain and pressure, temporal headaches, cheek pain, tooth sensitivity, neck and shoulder pain. Treatment consists of injecting local anesthetics and other medications, a soft diet, using moist heat, muscle relaxants and anti-inflammatory medications, and physiotherapy. Only rarely (in approximately 4% of cases) is surgery needed.
ERNEST SYNDROME
This TMJ-like problem involves the stylomandibular ligament, at tiny structure that connects the base of the skull with the mandibular, or lower jaw. If injured, this structure can produce pain in as many as seven specific regions of the face, head and neck: the temple, the TMJ, the ear, the cheek, the eye; the throat, especially when swallowing, and the lower back teeth and jaw bone. Treatment of Ernest syndrome, which is successful about 80% of the time, consists of injections of local anesthetic and medication (cortisone or Sarapin), physiotherapy, and at times, the use of an intraoral splint.
OCCIPITAL NEURALGIA
Occipital neuralgia is generally ignored in the medical textbooks. This disorder is characterized by pain located in the cervical and posterior regions of the head (these are the occipital areas) which may or may not extend or radiate into the sides of the head and ultimately, into the facial and frontal regions. There are actually two major types of occipital neuralgia: lesser occipital and greater occipital, with the lesser type being more common.

.01 Introduction Return to Index Most teachers recognize the critical need to establish a strong conceptual stage or foundation for students to build upon throughout the learning process. Those students that fail to acquire the requisite knowledge and conceptual foundation often struggle to understand new material, because they lack the cognitive framework or schemata necessary for deeper understanding and comprehension. The National Standards for History refer to this framework constructed in the minds of students as "mental scaffolding." The study of American history is greatly enhanced by careful and comprehensive construction of mental scaffolding. As such, the critical period for American history is the point at which we begin our survey history courses, the Pre-Columbian and colonial period. Perhaps the importance of the pre-Columbian era in American history is best summarized by some of the key architects of the National Standards for History The study of American history properly begins with the first peopling of this continent some 30,000 years ago, and then proceeds to the epic events of the late15th century when three worlds met: when Europeans, the inhabitants of North and South America, and the peoples of Africa entered upon a historic convergence that was to shape much of modern history in over half the world.

The Flora of North America project has grown out of a long history of interest in the flora area and has built on the experiences of previous efforts to produce a comprehensive flora. It has been designed to draw on the expertise of the entire systematic botany community and to make the best possible use of the literature and herbarium specimens that are essential resources for the project. Despite current interest in and urgency of botanical studies of many other kinds, there continues to be a need for information about the plants of North America on a continental scale. Historical Background The Flora of North America project derives from the deep interest that botanists have in studying and characterizing the plants of the region and the need for authoritative information for basic and applied research, conservation, and resource management.
