Big Snakes Quite a mouthful... If you look in the records there is a lot of controversy over which snake holds the world's record for massive size. The dimensions that have earned the anaconda the title of king is its total body mass or its weight (the sheer physical bulk of it). The other snake that competes with the anaconda is the Asiatic Reticulated Python ( Python reticulatus ). The python holds the world's record for length of a snake, with the longest ever measured at 33 feet. Even though the longest python is longer than the record-holding anaconda, the girth of the anaconda is far bigger. Anacondas in the jungles of South America can grow as big around as a grown man. Big enough to swallow a grown man whole!
The Secret Life of an Anaconda Anacondas in the wild spend most of their time hanging out in rivers hunting for their food. They are solitary creatures that are somewhat shy and not many of them are easily seen. They are very well camouflaged in the swamps and bogs in which they thrive. There are some historical reports of early European explorers of the South American jungles seeing giant anacondas up to 100 feet long! Some of the native peoples of the South American jungle have reported seeing anacondas up to 80 feet long. No one has caught and measured an anaconda anywhere near that size, but it sure is amazing to ponder the possibility.

Anaconda To see pictures of animals click the blue dot.. The anaconda is the biggest snake in the world, even larger than the Old World python. Yet despite its size and strength, it has few defenses against humans – its main enemy. A larger version of the boa constrictor, the anaconda is a massive snake that kills its prey by squeezing it to death in its powerful coils. It then swallows its victim whole. Although it has an appetite for prey as large as wild pigs and deer, the huge anaconda is capable of surviving for months and even years without food. Habitat: The abundant streams, rivers, swamps, and pools of the tropical rainforests of Amazonia provide an ideal habitat for the anaconda. This heavy snake is more at home in the water than on land, and it swims with grace and agility. It can stay submerged for over 10 minutes at a time and often lies beneath the surface waiting for prey. The anaconda lets itself be carried downstream on the river’s current with only its head breaking the surface. Then it drifts to the bank and glides away into the thick undergrowth. The anaconda usually hunts at night. It spends the day lying in the shallows or basking in the sun, draped over the branches of a tree at the water’s edge. Like most snakes, it can climb well and it uses trees for refuge from predators. Only the most powerful predator, however, can subdue a full grown anaconda. Food and Hunting: The anaconda preys on deer, wild pigs, and large rodents such as the agouti, paca, and capybara. It also attacks aquatic animals like the caiman, a relative of the alligator. The anaconda lies in a murky pool to ambush animals coming to drink. It seizes its prey quickly with its sharp teeth and drags it into the water. The victim often drowns before it is killed. Like all boas, the anaconda kills by constriction, coiling itself around the prey and squeezing. The snake squeezes tighter each time the animal breathes out so it cannot breathe in again. It quickly dies from suffocation. The anaconda swallows its victim whole. It can stretch its mouth around prey twice the width of its head because its jawbones are loosely attached to its skull and to each other. After a large meal, the anaconda sleeps for several days as it digests and may not feed again for weeks.

Learn About Snakes Striking Serpents
By Kathryn Tause
"A snake is the elegant product of a hundred million years of natural selection." Archie Carr, In Praise of Snakes Snakes have been both feared and revered from the beginning of recorded time. In the biblical Garden of Eden, the serpent tempted Eve to taste the forbidden fruit, forcing her and Adam out of the utopian garden into a world of sin. The mythical Medusa was feared for her head of writhing serpents, which turned anyone who looked at her to stone. And according to legend, St. Patrick banished snakes from Ireland, forever ridding the country of evil. Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine, carried a staff with a sacred snake coiled around it, its shedding skin portraying the renewal of rebirth and youth. In early Babylonia, the symbol of two intertwined snakes represented fertility, wisdom and healing. This later became a common political symbol for truce and neutrality, carved on staffs carried by Greek and Roman officials.

Life history and conservation of the green anaconda ( Eunectes murinus The green anaconda is the largest snake in the world. Although famous, very little is known about its life history. Until I began my research, no field studies had been carried out on the species. Due to the skin trade and habitat degradation its numbers have declined in places where they are not protected. In an effort to protect the species I began the Anaconda Project in 1992, with the aim to learn the basic aspects of the anaconda’s biology in order to create guidelines for its protection and possible management. At first, to work with anacondas seemed like a formidable challenge that I could not overcome. However, I chose to work in the llanos where the strong dry season makes the animals much easier to find and catch. Later I learned how to find, catch , and restrain them in the field. The areas of my research are: population dynamics, habitat use and mobility, diet preferences, predation of adults and juveniles mating system and reproduction; however I have collected information on a large number of other fields of the life of the animals. Among the many aspects that I have learned in a casual way from the snake, just by following them for so long is the presence of

Sometimes scientific assumptions or from ingrained points of view may hinder recognition of other possibilities. Here we here discuss an alternative approach to generating testable hypotheses: critical anthropomorphism (Burghardt 1991). By using critical anthropomorphism we propose a new hypothesis that has the potential to settle this controversy. One approach to doing this and still maintaining scientific rigor is to apply a critical anthropomorphism in which hypotheses are based on scientific knowledge about the species being studied as well as our experiential projection into the "shoes" (point of view) of others (Burghardt 1991) We apply this method to the maintenance of female biased SSD in snakes, where males compete physically for access to females in the context of actual mating. Natrix natrix Nerodia sipedon Thamnophis sirtalis Vipera berus ). Predictions from these models do not appear plausible when faced with the extent of the dimorphism seen. Perhaps we have been overly influenced by the behaviour of lizards, birds, and mammals, in which size and strength seem to be major determinants in mating success, and have inappropriately applied the evolutionary logic proposed for these groups to snakes.

Somewhere, someone thought Anaconda would be a good movie. Somewhere, something went horribly wrong. The movie, about a documentary film crew in the Amazon being stalked by giant, computer-generated snakes, is a morass of cliches, contradictions and clumsy attempts at suspense. The heroes are Jennifer Lopez as a young director and rap star Ice Cube as her buddy and cameraman. Eric Stoltz plays the anthropologist who hires them, but spends most of the movie in bed after he's disabled by inhaling a poisonous wasp. MOVIE REVIEW

The snake may scare Anacondaphobiacs. Full Review Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot Jon Voight is the finest actor in Hollywood, period. After, of course, Gary Busey. When are these two going to star opposite each other in a "good cop, bad cop" action drama? Okay, sorry, back to reality. And the reality is that this is one blockbuster of a film. I say film because calling this piece of art a movie would be to lump it in with such gut-bombs as Independence Day and The Rock, two of the worst movies in the history of humankind. Hell, Godzilla went to Cannes, why didn't Anaconda go? In a battle between this giant snake and the pathetic reincarnation of the rubber-suit thunder lizard, I'd take this snake. As the prophetic Cube utters in sheer amazement, "Dey snakes out here dis BIG?" Basically, this film revolves around a giant computer-generated snake. I know, I know what you're saying. Snakes are animals, computers are machines. There is no such thing as a cyborg snake. Believe me, I know this too. However, the producers of this film found the best computer artists around in order to tackle the un-enviable job of making this snake come alive. It didn't hurt that the actors made it seem as though they were really afraid of this constrictor. You can read the fear in the eyes of Stoltz, Wuhrer, Wilson, and Lopez. You can hear Cube's voice quiver like a gelatinous dessert when he refers to the snake. And you can see the respect in the maddened eyes of Voight.

The challenge from Columbia Pictures: build monster size anacondas that slither, coil and strike like the real thing. We came up with a 40-foot, 5500 lb. beast that contained 60 individually controlled vertebrae and over 40 miles of wire. It was powered by over 70 microprocessors and a 5,000 psi hydraulic system.

"As soon as we saw his creations and began to talk with Walt, we knew we had found our guy. He is a phenomenal engineer and creator and, really, the only one capable of doing this." Susan Ruskin, Producer "A spectacle like this lives and dies on the creature. And here, 'Anaconda' belts one out of the park. The state-of-the-art mix of computer graphics from Sony Pictures Imageworks and Walter Conti's animatronic effects have created a real creepy crawler." David Goodman, Associated Press "Its snakes are thoroughly satisfying. There are utterly convincing close-ups of an anaconda's head, its bright eyes glistening, its mouth gaping open to reveal fangs, its skin glistening with a terrible beauty." Roger Ebert "They've created an incredible creature. It was scary being in the scene with it, I'd begin to believe it could actually kill me. It looked so real and sometimes it seemed to move by itself. It was hard to believe it wasn't alive, it moved so realistically."

Snakes are found all over the world except in the Antarctic. You can find the Adder and the Viper snakes all over Europe and across Asia. They are poisonous. Did you know that some animals like hedgehogs, foxes and stoats prey on snakes like the adder and enjoy eating them. What a tasty meal! Australia has a number of poisonous snakes too. Check out the links below to find out more about Aussie snakes. Some people mistake the Slow-Worm or Blindworm for a snake but it really is a harmless legless lizard. The Asian or Indian Cobra lives in southern Asia and is one of the poisonous cobras. It grows to about 11/2m long. New-born adders are eaten by many different animals such as toads, crows and other birds. The boa is not poisonous but squeezes its victim to death before swallowing it whole. It lives in the rivers systems near the banks of rivers. The Anaconda is a boa-constrictor and is found in South America. It is one of the longest snakes in the world and can grow as long as 9m. To make "Anaconda," the cast and crew journeyed far from the safety of a Hollywood sound stage into the heart of South America's Amazon basin. "Imagine the most beautiful place in the world that you've ever seen and multiply it by 100," said actor Eric Stoltz It appears to have been a life-changing experience for all involved in this snake-crazed flick. Voight says the five weeks in Brazil gave him a new respect for the rain forest and the people who live there. "The tropical jungles are very impressive but they're oppressive too. The heavy heat, teaming with life, but very majestic," Voight said. "It's an amazing thing." For rap-star turned actor Ice Cube it was the unknown that made the biggest impression. "You're looking at all this creepy, crawly stuff but at least you can see it," he says. "But when you get in the water. You can't see anything. You don't know what's under there."
