The anaconda eats aquatic reptiles, fish, rodents, frogs, lizards, other snakes, deer, sheep, dogs, and has eaten humans before.

The Anaconda This is one of the biggest snakes in the world, and it's name translates to "elephant killer." The Anaconda is cold blooded or "ectotherm" is the scientific name. Also to reduce questions the Anaconda has never been recorded at the lengths told in myths or in the movie Anaconda. The largest has been recorded at 37.5 feet long, 1 and a 1/2 feet in diameter, and weighed 550 pounds. I will tell you the characteristics, habitat, movement, relatives, diet, structural / behavioral adaptations, parental care, and why it is an ectotherm. First, the Anaconda is a large, awesome swimmer. It's eyes and nose are on the top of it's head. When it swims it can see and breathe with just the top of it's head above water. The Anaconda's size and spots act as a camouflage. The large black and brown spots blend in with the murky water. That means the Anaconda can't be seen. Second, did you know that the Anaconda is one of the few reptiles that has live babies? Most other reptiles lay eggs. The Anaconda's babies are born live and in 2 hours are left by their parents. Most don't eat for about a week after they are born, they swim quickly, and about one-fourth of them are eaten after birth. At birth they are about 2 feet long. There is no parental care at all in the Anaconda family. The babies are left to fend for themselves. Next, the Anaconda is a very large ectotherm as I have already told you. The Anaconda is an ectotherm because it is a reptile. All reptiles are cold blooded. It is an ectotherm because it's body temperature varies with the environment. This means it's ectothermic because, the body temperature is about the same as the outside temperature. If it is to cold out and the Anaconda is out it's body freezes or shuts down.

(We've been working on researching, writing, and editing this story for months. We hope you enjoy reading it.) Some snakes are deadly. The python is not deadly, but it can kill huge things. It can kill an alligator. They are found mainly in Africa and South East Asia. Pythons, boas, and anacondas are related. They are the largest snakes in the world. They are not poisonous but kill by constriction. This means they squeeze their prey to death. Some species can kill people, but not very many can. Some snakes have very few predators. Some have only just one. Cottonmouth Cottonmouths have a triangular shaped head. They are really poisonous. They really hurt when they bite. They are really dangerous. They can be found from southern Virginia to Missouri and in all southeastern United States. They live in ponds, swamps, and near rivers. They make their burrows in muddy ground near the rivers. They may also take over another animal's den like a muskrat's den. Boas Boas are big and strong. Boas can kill deer and other big animals such as crocodiles. They choke their prey to kill it. Then they swallow their prey because they can open their mouths wide.

Black Caiman
Related to the extinct dinosaurs of the Mesozoic era 200 million years ago, the black caiman (Melanosuchus niger) is a top predator in the Amazon. The back caiman resembles the alligator and can grow as long as 20 feet (6 m) in length. This reptile often hunts animals drinking water along a cocha's shoreline. Once an animal is targeted, the black caiman will typically grab the prey by its head or legs and proceed to drown it by pulling the unfortunate creature into the water. The caiman's diet includes fish, capybaras, deer, and other mammals in the Amazon region. Male and female caimans mate in water. A female then lays as many as 60 eggs in a nest mound located on the shoreline. With the help of their mother, baby caimans hatch in three months and start feeding on insects. As they grow larger, the young gradually begin feeding on fish and later mammals. The black caiman was nearly hunted to extinction for its skin. In fact in the last century, hunting has reduced the caimen population by 99%. This creature is now found only in remote regions of the Amazon, such as in the Manu River. Other variations of caiman that live in Manu include the smaller white caiman (Caiman crocodilus) and the rare Schneider's dwarf caiman (Paleosuchus trigonatus).

The Anaconda
The giant anaconda provokes both wonder and fear, yet almost no scientific studies have been done on these magnificent serpents............`till now. Thanks to the efforts of a team of American and Venezuelan biologists, the stories of monstrous man-eating horned snakes that breathe poisonous gas, will soon be no more. Dr. Robert Henderson who is curator of herpetology at the Milwaukee Public Museum, Dr. John Thorbjarnarson, a conservation biologist at the Wildlife Conservation Society in New York, Jesus Rivas, an ecologist at the University of Tennessee, Bill Holmstrom, and Maria Munoz make up this team of biologists. The following is what they have learned thus far. The species, known as Eunectes murinus, ranges throughout South America's Orinoco and Amazon river basins. Dr. Thorbjarnarson and his team chose to study the snakes here in the Venezuelan savannas, known as the llanos, at a ranch called Hato El Cadral. A working cattle ranch, El Cedral is also preserve rich enough in wildlife to attract a healthy ecotourism trade, particularly in the dry season. Its extensive savannas, navigable only by boat in the rainy season, turn in dry weather into a patchwork of isolated pools, where more than 500 snakes have been found and marked since the project began in 1992. In tracking these snakes, the biologists have gotten a first peek into the love life of anacondas. When it comes to anaconda sex, they have found, the more the merrier. In the breeding season, which has now begun in the llanos, a single female can be found entwined with as many as 12 much smaller males in a heaping mass known as a mating ball. Researchers say the females appear to hang out in a pool of water, draped in and visited by as many as 17 consorts for as long as four to six weeks.

Amazon Legends
The immense Amazon region is fertile ground not only for flora and fauna, but also for legends. They're an integral part of local culture and are remarkably consistent throughout the region. Many are based on strange creatures that inhabit the rivers and jungle. One of the most widespread legends is that of the cobra grande (giant snake), which strikes fear into the hearts of many a river dweller. Popularized by the movie, Anaconda, which was filmed near Manaus, the story involves sucuri (anaconda) snakes of epic proportions that terrorize jungle creatures. They're said to cause shipwrecks and to eat fleeing passengers whole. According to one version, the snakes originated from a human baby whose mother discarded it in the river. Another extremely popular (and considerably less gruesome) legend is that of the botos (dolphins) that take human form. Always dressed immaculately in white, they appear at parties and dance with the youngest, most beautiful girls. They lure the girls outside, where they seduce them and then return to the water just before dawn. You can always tell a boto from its slightly fishy smell and the hole in the top of its head, which is covered by a hat. Curupira is said to lure people into the jungle, causing them to become irreversibly lost. He appears as a nude and savage indigenous child, about six or seven years old, whose feet are turned backward. As the story goes, white men cut off his feet before killing him. A god sewed Curupira's feet back on backwards and returned him to the forest to exact revenge.

An Amazon Adventure
Anaconda
The anaconda has quite a reputation. Movies and books make it out to be a dangerous killer that should cause fear. I was dying to see one. There are two species of anaconda in the Amazon basin. The Great Water Boa and the Yellow Boa. Both are members of the family Boidae and belong to the genus Eunectes. Anaconda are types of boa constrictor and catch their food by grabbing them and then squeezing them to death like any other constrictor.
We were coming back from a day trip when we had to pass under a log. As we were passing, Robinson yelled then jumped off the boat and began to grab at the tree. The next thing we knew he was climbing back into the boat with a live anaconda. What none of us expected was the way that the snake would try to protect itselfit promptly began to (how should I say this delicately?) poop all over the place with smelly, watery, yellow stuff. I think that most normal people would have dropped it but Robinson held on and we brought it home with us.
We let the anaconda crawl around the floor of the dining lodge for the rest of the night. While it wasn't dangerous, you had to watch out so you didn't step on it. The snake was released in a side stream the next day.

"An Anaconda has heat sensors. A warm body is not hard to find. It strikes, wraps around you, holds you tighter than your true love and you get the privilege of hearing your bones break before the power of their embrace causes your veins to explode. Then it swallows you whole.
The Anaconda is the perfect killing machine."
- Paul Sarone, Anaconda
Treachery lurks on an Amazon river barge heading unknowingly to its final destination an encounter with a giant Anaconda.
The Brazilian Rainforest possesses its own ancient and paradoxical order. A beguiling jewel of a jungle, neon birds glitter in its canopy of prehistoric trees as capricious, nimble monkeys scamper along their branches. Craggy caimans and sinuous serpents slither into the dark Amazon River. Shimmering dawns give way to torrid sunsets. Yet this tangle of life quickly becomes an ominous labyrinth. Danger lurks at every bend of the mighty Amazon and these exotic residents prove to be as deadly as they are beautiful. At the top of this complex and powerful food chain is the largest and most vicious killer snake in the world... the Anaconda.
A documentary film crew enters this mysterious world, armed with cameras, sound equipment and the optimism of the uninitiated. Headed by anthropologist Steven Cale (Eric Stoltz), the crew, including director Terri Flores (Jennifer Lopez), cameraman Danny (Ice Cube), sound mixer Gary (Owen Wilson), production manager Denise Kalberg (Kari Wuhrer) and narrator Warren Westridge (Jonathan Hyde), embarks on a river expedition to find the legendary and undocumented Shirishama Indians, their boat piloted by the colorful Mateo (Vincent Castellanos). Along the way, they encounter Paul Sarone (Jon Voight) stranded on a deserted boat.

Half.com *Also starring: Ice Cube Jon Voight Jonathan Hyde Owen Wilson Review by MrBrown 0 stars out of 4 "When you can't breathe, you can't scream." That may be true, but when speaking in terms of the new thriller Anaconda, a more fitting tagline would be "When you're laughing your ass off, you can't scream," for this inane jungle adventure is nothing less than Congo '97. Now, if one is making a movie about snakesgiant, man-eating snakes, no lessone would think that the first order of business would be to come up with convincing snake effects. Apparently, no one involved in Anaconda thought hard enough. The animatronic snakes look like giant rubber hoses with tire treads. Llosa also uses some "state-of-the-art" computer animation for some shots of the snake striking and wrapping around its prey, but the effects are obviously computer generated; the seams are quite visible. The phony snakes are more than enough to ruin the film, but the true awfulness of Anaconda doesn't stop there. Two wordsJon Voight. As the nominal human villain of the piece, he is a complete embarrassment. If his unconvincing accent (alternately overdone and underdone) isn't bad enough, there are his hilarious leering gazes at Lopez. If that isn't enough, there are his "villainous" looks, clenched teeth and eyes in full bulge, during the physical scenes. The rest of the cast isn't all that great, either, but their work is downright Oscar-caliber compared to Voight's laughably overwrought turn.

Eunectus murinus
Latreille 1801
GEOGRAPHY:
The green anaconda inhabits areas with nearby shallow water sources swamps, rivers, etc. typically found throughout the fresh vegetation that grows in these shallow watered places in South America. The areas inhabited by these boids sometimes dry out in the dry season and they can be found in any area of free standing water. Some need to be saved from dried up rivers and moved to more suitable areas until the rainy season returns. The animals are measured and then taken to a water tributary and then returned during the rainy season. Many governments in South America sponser these round ups and the number of large specimens found during these periods are becoming more scarce every year.

Well this may be the largest snake on earth. The other rival being the reticulated python. However in total body mass this snake wins out. Typically average sizes for green anacondas are from 12-20 feet. However specimens may exceed 20 feet in length. These animals may weigh over 300 pounds ! A true giant snake! This is a giant that does not need too many special requirements to keep in captivity.
