What Is Ancient Philosophy?
Pierre Hadot
Translated by Michael Chase A magisterial mappa mundi of the terrain that Pierre Hadot has so productively worked for decades, this ambitious work revises our view of ancient philosophyand in doing so, proposes that we change the way we see philosophy itself. Hadot takes ancient philosophy out of its customary realm of names, dates, and arid abstractions and plants it squarely in the thick of life. Through a meticulous historical reading, he shows how the various schools, trends, and ideas of ancient Greek and Roman philosophy all tended toward one goal: to provide a means for achieving happiness in this life, by transforming the individual's mode of perceiving and being in the world. Most pressing for Hadot is the question of how the ancients conceived of philosophy. He argues in great detail, systematically covering the ideas of the earliest Greek thinkers, Hellenistic philosophy, and late antiquity, that ancient philosophers were concerned not just to develop philosophical theories, but to practice philosophy as a way of life-a way of life to be suggested, illuminated, and justified by their philosophical "discourse." For the ancients, philosophical theory and the philosophical way of life were inseparably linked. What Is Ancient Philosophy?

Ancient Skepticism
Used in its most specific sense, the expression "ancient skepticism" refers to two movements in ancient philosophy. One is Pyrrhonism, which claims Pyrrho of Elis (4th-3rd c. B.C.) as its founder but was especially prominent during and after the 1st c. B.C. The other is Academic Skepticism, which encompasses a skeptical phase in the history of Plato's Academy (3rd to early 1st c. B.C.). Used more broadly and more loosely, the term "skepticism" is sometimes used in conjunction with a great many ancient thinkers who are not tied to these two movements, but are characterized by significant skeptical inclinations. The most important of these are Protagoras and Socrates, but one might also include Gorgias, Democritus, Aristippus and Diogenes of Sinope (the "Cynic"). While the views of these figures are sometimes mentioned in the present article, it focuses on the narrow notion of "ancient skepticism" and the figures and schools that it encompasses.
An Overview
Following Sextus Empiricus, we can say that the ancient "skeptic" (from a Greek verb meaning "to examine carefully") was an "investigator." He was someone who investigated the questions of philosophy but "suspended judgment" because he was unable to resolve the contrary attitudes, opinions and arguments that characterized the debated topics of philosophy, hence unable to arrive at a definitive position of his own on any of them. Instead of adhering to some standard philosophical position, the skeptic therefore described himself as someone who continues to investigate a "zetetic."

What Is Ancient Philosophy?
Pierre Hadot
Translated by Michael Chase First published in France in 1995, Hadot's overview of ancient philosophy...is quite possibly one of the best one-volume works on the subject to have appeared in English in a very long time, not only for the clarity with which it is written...but also for the point of view Hadot takes. In keeping with Socrates' dictum that the unexamined life is not worth living, Hadot places each philosopher or movement discussed firmly within its cultural and intellectual context and shows that philosophy was not simply a process for creating theories but, more importantly, a way of life for many.
Terry Skeats, Library Journal Pierre Hadot is determined to change our view of ancient philosophy, and by extension, of philosophy as a discipline...Like Hadot's hero Socrates, What is Ancient Philosphy? is a triumph of irony: a meticulous historical survey that ends by inspiring the reader to actually do philosophy. Handsomely designed, with useful bibliography and chronology, it's a compact text for the "never-ending quest."

Ancient Philosophy Western.
Pre-Socratic Philosophers:
The history of Philosophy in the west begins with the Greeks, and particularly with a group of philosophers commonly called the pre-Socratics. This is not to say that there were not other pre-philosophical rumblings in Egyptian, Semitic, and Babylonian cultures. Certainly there were great thinkers and writers in each of these cultures, and there is evidence that some of the earliest Greek philosophers may have had contact with at least some of the products of Egyptian and Babylonian thought. However, the early Greek thinkers add at least one element which differentiates their thought from all those who came before them. For the first time in history, we discover in their writings something more than dogmatic assertions about the way the world is ordered we find reasoned arguments for various beliefs about the world. As it turns out nearly all of the various cosmologies proposed by the early Greek philosophers are profoundly and demonstrably false, but this does not diminish their importance. For, even if later philosophers summarily rejected the answers they provided, they could not escape their questions.

Pythagoras and the Pythagoreans : A Brief History by Charles H. Kahn (Hackett) This wonderful book manages to inspire readers with the ancient vision of Pythagoras while at there same time showing how his general ideas fed the classical world of philosophy and science and how his vision continued to find surprising echoes down to the dawn of modernity. Besides offers concise and wise summaries of the dispersed evidence the book also answers and more general question of why we should want to study the traditions. This fascinating portrait of the Pythagorean tradition, including a substantial account of the Neo-Pythagorean revival, and ending with Johannes Kepler on the threshold of modernism should keep anyone enthralled.

John J. Cleary John Manoussakis Gary Gurtler, S. J. Editorial Assistant Editors The Boston Area Colloquium in Ancient Philosophy has existed since 1978. It was founded by Prof. Robert Hahn at Brandeis University under the name of "The Greater Boston Colloquium for Ancient Philosophy." Initially it functioned as a loose coalition of three or four universities in the Boston area, which each sponsored a lecture or two in the series. Scholars who happened to be visiting the area from other parts of the U.S. or abroad delivered impromptu lectures on topics of interest to local philosophers and classicists. In 1984 the Colloquium underwent a 'sea-change' with an award from the National Endowment for the Humanities of substantial funding over a three year period for the so-called 'Greater Boston Project'. The proposal was written by John Cleary and funded by the Division of Education at the NEH for the purpose of promoting undergraduate education in classics and ancient philosophy through lectures, seminars and class visits by leading international scholars in the field. Since the primary purpose of the project was the promotion of education rather than scholarship, the NEH did not provide any money for scholarly publications. But the academic vice-president at Boston College generously provided funding for the publication of Proceedings, which have been published annually since 1985.
