Ancient Egypt, land of love on the Nile The Ancient Egyptians asked the biggest "What if...?" question ever. What if your soul truly is eternal? What if you do continue? What would it be like? What are the expectations of an immortal and divine soul? It is the ultimate "desert island game:" What if you were stuck on a desert island forever. What would you want to have with you? Death is that desert island, stuck in the ocean of eternity.
The ancient Egyptians played this "desert island game" with elaborate intensity, devoting their lives to living a life worth living for eternity. They began with the basics, air, water, light, a place to stand, making love, breathing breaths, bread, beer and onions. Their

humanism the humanist tradition ethical briefings ... the humanist tradition ancient philosophy Ancient philosophy Humanist ideas have probably been around as long as humans. Certainly some of the ancient Indian, Chinese, Greek and Roman philosophers were expressing humanist ideas as long as 2,500 years ago, when they suggested that humankind alone is responsible for human welfare and that morality arises out of the need to live together harmoniously. Many people have thought and expressed humanist ideas over many centuries all over the world, contributing to a humanist tradition. Though some of them may have believed in a god or gods, they were thoughtful, humane, open-minded people, and many of them fought against the ignorance and religious bigotry of their day, sometimes taking considerable personal risks to do so. Many of the great philosophers, scientists and moral thinkers were essentially humanist, because they did not accept traditional beliefs but thought for themselves and pushed human knowledge forwards. China
Confucius, the Chinese philosopher who lived 500 BCE, was a great moral teacher who tried to replace old religious observances with moral values as the basis for social and political order. When he was asked if he could sum up "the true way" in a single word, he replied, "'Reciprocity' is such a word." Confucius was not technically a humanist, but like humanists today he did not see "the true way" as following religious codes, but as based on reason and humanity, stressing the importance of benevolence, respect for others, and looking pragmatically at individual situations rather than blindly following traditional rules. Confucianism had many interpreters and followers - it was the state religion of China until the upheavals of the twentieth century.

Excellent Pierre Hadot has spent his lifes work uncovering the reasons why philosophy was conceived, especially by the ancients. His credentials show forth with greatness in this beautiful complilation. There are to many discoveries here to mention, however two main points seem to be stressed, the philosophy of belief of faith and the practice of such, the other is,,,"Would it be wise to return to such philosophy? A moving forward seems to spring from within Pierre. No other book looks at these ancients in the way Hadot does, I do not recall a piece that analyzes in his way, it is as though he is using the same historic philosophy, but melds with 21st century thinking. A very good book that moves in this direction with parallel analysis is SB: 1 or God, I strongly recommend this authors philosophy, Karl Mark Maddox.

Presocratics Our western philosophical tradition began in ancient Greece in the 6th century BCE. The first philosophers are called "Presocratics" which designates that they came before Socrates. The Presocratics were from either the eastern or western regions of the Greek world. Athens home of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle is in the central Greek region and was late in joining the philosophical game. The Presocratic's most distinguishing feature is emphasis on questions of physics; indeed, Aristotle refers to them as "Investigators of Nature". Their scientific interests included mathematics, astronomy, and biology. As the first philosophers, though, they emphasized the rational unity of things, and rejected mythological explanations of the world. Only fragments of the original writings of the presocratics survive, in some cases merely a single sentence. The knowledge we have of them derives from accounts of early philosophers, such as Aristotle's Physics and Metaphysics The Opinions of the Physicists by Aristotle's pupil Theophratus, and Simplicius, a Neoplatonist who compiled existing quotes.

The Kybalion

An online ebook edition of The Kybalion by the Three Initiates this book is a study of basic hermetic teachings that outlines an ageless wisdom. In ancient times (and perhaps even today) these teachings were not understood by the lay person, but were readily understood by students, after the axioms and principles had been explained and exemplified by the Hermetic Initiates to their Neophytes. The Kybalion was originally written in the early 1900s and has now fallen into the public domain. A priceless gem!

Who were the Three Initiates? The authors of the Kybalion chose not to associate their names with the book, possibly because the principles and philosophy it outlines cannot be credited to any person. Were they self-proclaimed initiates or did someone or something initiate them? And if they were initiated, who or what did it and what was the initiation? As mysteries abound, explore the rest of the links on this page and see where they lead you. 96. THE ROOTS OF THE NEW AGE MOVEMENT - New Age In Ancient History- Gnosticism - Alc
New Age philosophy is based on ancient traditions, alchemy, gnosticism, Rosicrucianism, Freemasonry. Its roots are explored in Eastern and Western traditions.
http://www.xs4all.nl/~wichm/newage3.html
The roots of the
NEW AGE
PART ONE
The New Age movement is hardly novel! Its philosophy is rooted in ancient traditions, often based on mystical experiences, each within a different context. Anthropologically, there have always been (wo)men within "primitive" societies who were looked upon as possessing special knowledge and power. Medicine men, or shamans, had undergone a spontaneous catharsis, or were initiated and felt called upon to maintain contact with the spirit world for the clan. When communities became more complex and organized there was little place for these loners. Society began to specialize, people realized and felt drawn to form groups, guilds, or societies, to ensure continuance and growing perfection. Contact with the spirit world was given into the hands of organized religion, which also provided an established answer to questions about the unknown and the Highest Power. People who felt endowed with special powers could hardly adapt themselves to the corset of established faith. They went underground. Yet they endeavoured to contact kindred spirits and pupils willing to follow in their footsteps to pass on the work. Esoteric tradition became handed down in spiritual groups, communes, or fraternities. Their mutual devotion resulted in a high degree of perfection comparable to the guilds of craftsmen. In their mystical experiences they beheld a spiritual reality that could hardly be reconciled with the dogmatic representation given by the churches. When passing on their experiences, they had to exercise extreme caution, lest being accused of heresy. Yet knowledgeable minds would understand their veiled writings, symbolic representations, or even gestures.

In these troubled times we must remember our civility. We live in a community to share our strengths and bolster our weaknesses. When we truly support each other we will thrive. Baseball is bigger than all of us. Baseball teaches respect for players, teams, and families. Baseball teaches cooperation and responsibility. Baseball can show us the way to experience a fulfilling life. "Baseball According to Lao-Tzu" , a new book by John W. Hart III, is a poetic blending of baseball, the ancient Chinese philosophy of the Tao, and inspired illustrations that present wisdom with a bit of humor in this gentle guide to life.

Foundations Study Guide: Ancient Greek Philosophy
by George Brakas, Ph.D. George Brakas is professor of philosophy at Marist College and author of Aristotle's Concept of the Universal. Before philosophy for tens of thousands of years, human beings did not see the world as we see it. Why did the Nile rise and flood the fields with dark, fertile soil? Because the Pharaoh had commanded it to. Why did the violent storm destroy the village and its people? Because it wished to. "The world appears to primitive man neither inanimate nor empty but redundant with life.... Any phenomenon may at any time face him, not as 'It,' but as 'Thou.' In this confrontation, 'Thou' reveals its individuality, its qualities, its will. 'Thou' is not contemplated with intellectual detachment; it is experienced as life confronting life....Thoughts, no less than acts and feelings, are subordinated to this experience." In this profoundly revealing passage from
