Brain Aneurysm Foundation Established Patients with brain aneurysms often present with intracranial hemorrhage. There can be varying degrees of neurologic injury as a result of the initial hemorrhage. Recovery after treatment can often be long and, at times, requires inpatient or outpatient physical and occupational therapy. For patients with unruptured aneurysms, there is often more time for patient education regarding the potential risks of hemorrhage or neurologic impairment from their aneurysms and the risks of treatment. After treatment, the process of recovery requires the full support and understanding of the patient's family, as well as the willingness of the patients themselves. Many of the patients and their family members share common concerns. In response to many of these concerns, members of the Brain Aneurysm/AVM Center (at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston) have worked closely with patients and their families to establish the Brain Aneurysm Foundation. The purpose of the foundation is to serve the needs of brain aneurysm patients and their families through support networks, the expertise of its Medical Advisory Board, newsletters,educational materials and public education about the condition. Two other goals of the foundation are to promote and support research, including clinical and basic scientific, on the cause(s) and treatment of brain aneurysms (and related conditions) as well as to provide financial assistance to needy aneurysm patients and their families. An aortic aneurysm is the dilatation (widening or bulge) of a portion of the aorta, usually at a weak spot in the aortic wall. The aorta is the largest artery in the body. Arterial aneurysms have a tendency to grow and burst causing life threatening bleeding. Treatment of this disease has been ongoing for many years through open surgical repair of the dilated artery. A Stroke is the ultimate "Brain Attack." It can strike the young, healthy, productive head of a household during a soft, shared moment with a spouse anytime. Nothing is more frightening. One might hear: "I'm having the worst headache of my life!" Or, "Oh, my neck is so stiff!" Then the victim might vomit, perhaps have a convulsion which could leave them comatose and all bystanders truly frightened. In the emergency room even the doctors look worried. The CAT scan shows "blood around the brain," something doctors call a "subarachnoid hemorrhage." Bandolier Bandolier Library search Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Bandolier has been asked by a GP whether there is enough evidence about the effectiveness of screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) for it to be introduced into his practice. To try and answer this we searched MEDLINE from 1993 to the present to see if there were any new reports which helped. There was no single source of information which brought this subject together, but we did find some interesting papers. RCT for AAA A recently published English randomised trial in Chichester [1] has tried to examine the incidence of rupture following AAA screening. It was the most useful report and worth examining in some detail. The setting was 15,775 men and women aged 65-80 years identified from GP registers and FHSA lists. These people were then randomised by computer to control and screening groups. Those randomised to screening were invited for abdominal ultrasonographic scanning by letter from their family practice; one reminder was sent if there was no reply. Aneurysm was defined as maximum aortic diameter of 3 cm or more. Annual re-scanning took place if the diameter was 3 - 4.4 cm, and at three-monthly intervals if it was 4.5 - 5.9 cm. This protocol was continued until February 1994 or until the patient died, underwent surgery or declined further follow-up. Aortic diameters of 6 cm or more, and increase of diameter of 1 cm or more in a year, or developments of symptoms attributable to the aneurysm all constituted criteria for considering surgery.
