Lonely Planet Lonely Planet guide to Anguilla and the world Order Now
Anguilla Culture Anguilla's West Indian culture is a blend of British and African influences. Because of the dry and barren nature of the island, the small population on Anguilla has traditionally struggled to make ends meet and has looked toward the sea, in the form of fishing and boatbuilding, for its livelihood. One consequence of this seafaring heritage is a penchant for boat racing. Aside from the boxy modern buildings in The Valley, visitors will notice that the predominant architectural style on Anguilla is unfinished concrete. Many Anguillians work abroad and return home periodically to make piecemeal additions to their property as their earnings permit, leaving foundations and unfinished walls scattered about the island. back to top

Easter Monday Boat Race
www.news.ai Site Map Click to enlarge pictures The highlight of the Easter weekend's festive events was the Annual East Monday boat race. Mead's Bay was full of activity as crowds gathered to "lime" (hang out) and support the race. The race began at Mead's Bay in the west and continued to the outskirts of Sandy Hill Bay in the east and culminated back at Mead's Bay. The sunny day provided the perfect setting for an exciting race. Locals, visitors and yachters from neighbouring St. Martin joined in the action. De Tree, owned by the Blowing Point Committee, captured first place in the 2001 race (notice the De Tree supporters waving tree branches as they welcome their winner in the picture above), followed closely by N.W.O. Third place was taken by The Viking and The Eagle got the fourth spot. Barbecues and tented bars were kept busy as The Better Band pleased the crowds with live musical entertainment. Boat racing is an integral part of Anguilla's history and culture. The sea provided an opportunity when the island's climate and economic circumstances were challenging. This background led to the vibrant boat racing passion on the island. For more about the boat racing culture on the island you may want to read "Nuttin Bafflin" by David Carty and visit this news.ai report

Despite being out of the way, Anguilla has been inhabited, in some shape or form, for tens of thousands of years. Archaeologists recently discovered remains of the largest rodent known to have walked the earth - it was reckoned at about 3 feet (1 metre) high and weighing up to 350 pounds (160 kilos) and became extinct from Anguilla about 20,000 years ago. More recently the island was inhabited from about 2000 BC by the Arawak Indians who had gradually moved up through the Caribbean island chain from South America in their dugout canoes. 42 Amerindian archaeological sites of interest have been uncovered in Anguilla revealing many artifacts attesting to their presence and the richness of their culture. Many examples can now be seen at the National Trust Museum.
The English colonised the island in about 1650 but were themselves wiped out by the Caribs, a warrior people from South America, in 1656. The power struggle between the English and the French in the Caribbean dominated Anguilla's history for the next 150 years and severely disrupted their basic cash crop economy. Anguillans experienced many hardships trying to eke out a living during political wrangling between these two powers.
The British Empire set up a new administrative framework for their territories in the region in 1824. In short, Anguilla was to be administered over by St. Kitts and lacked any real autonomy. Anguillans resented this as they felt those in St. Kitts were unaware and uninterested in the needs of Anguillans. These seeds of discontent were to come to a head some 145 years later.

The name 'Anguilla' means 'eel' and well describes its long, thin shape. Its people are of mixed origins, though primarily of African descent. The island is very flat with its highest point at a little over 200 feet (70 metres). Rainfall levels are low and the resulting vegetation is mostly small trees and bush.
Photo by Carol Lee Anguilla's position and basic geology has contributed much to its appeal; it is quiet, secluded and peaceful. It is widely regarded as having the best beaches in the Caribbean. With its exclusive resorts and fine dining Anguilla appeals to the discerning visitor. It has also, in more recent times, continued to grow as a centre for offshore banking. Lettuce Ponds
Lettuce is seeded, transplanted and harvested every day. Two boards are harvested, cleaned and transplanted each day giving a daily production of 128 head. There are a total of 52 boards in the combined two lettuce ponds. The growing cycle of the lettuce in the ponds is 26 days.
The nutrient solution is cooled by a chiller to a temperature between 70 and 73 F. This helps prevent root diseases. The solution is circulated and aerated by a pump and perimeter piping in the bottom of the pond. The pond is 12 inches deep.
Bato Bucket System
Tomatoes

Two tomato plants are grown in each bato bucket. The plants are trained vertically by the use of plastic clips onto the support strings. The plants are alternately sloped to each side in a V-cordon method to maximize light utilization. All suckers are removed at the leaf axils to get a single stem plant as these are staking varieties. Once the plants reach the overhead wires in about 4 months they are lowered and allowed again to reach the wires. This process of lowering is repeated as needed, usually weekly. The plants will bear fruit after 3 months and continue up to 6 to 8 months depending upon their vigor.
Peppers
European Cucumber

These plants are sown every 5 weeks. They will begin fruiting 5 weeks after sowing. Only one plant per pot is planted as they have much larger leaves than tomatoes or peppers and intercept more light so wider spacing is necessary. The cucumbers are also trained vertically up to the support wires, where they are topped and several suckers allowed to continue growing over the wires and fall down. All suckers, tendrils and much of the fruit are removed from the main stem to allow the plant to become vigorous. This vigor is needed in order that the plant may support the heavy fruit load later.
