An experimental eel culture tank in the Philippines. (Inset) Care should be taken not to injure the eels while harvesting. BACKYARD EEL culture is a low-cost enterprise for small and marginal farmers. It is relatively easy and more profitable than several other small-scale fish-culture projects. Eel culture does not require expansive water bodies and specific expensive formulated feed," says Dr. S.S. Tabrez Nasar, an aquaculture specialist, working as Programme Officer at the International Institute of Rural Reconstruction (IIRR) in Philippines. Eels are long snake-like fish with a smooth, slimy scale-less skin. They are usually light chestnut brown in colour with numerous black spots.

Anguilla (àng-gwîl´e, àn-)
An island of the British West Indies in the northern Leeward Islands. Settled by the British in the 17th century, it was part of the self-governing colony of St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla until 1967, when it seceded unilaterally. A bid for full independence led to the landing of British troops in 1969.

46. Culture
St. Kitts culture. In the 1950s and 1960s, St. Kitts and Nevis were politicallyjoined with anguilla, though all three were still colonies.
http://www.timothybeach.com/culture.htm
St. Kitts Culture Christopher Columbus discovered the island in 1493, and named it St. Christopher after himself. Today, it is better known as St. Kitts. The British came in 1623 and founded the first British colony in the West Indies. After a period of association with Britain, the state of St. Kitts and Nevis attained full political independence in September 1983 and enjoys a democratic type of government. It has a population of 40,618, of which 31,824 live on St. Kitts and 8,794 on Nevis. Agriculture has significant potential due to fertile soil, availability of water and open land. Interest has been growing in the manufacturing sector in recent years. A Fiscal Incentives Law provides for duty-free importation of certain materials, plus a tax holiday of up to 15 years depending upon the nature and size of the investment. The government of St. Kitts and Nevis welcomes foreign private investment as a means of developing and diversifying its economy, and companies may be allowed to repatriate profits, dividends and imported capital upon arrangements with the Ministry of Finance. There are no exchange controls. Banking services are available through local and international banking organizations. Applications for registering a vessel under the St. Kitts and Nevis flag can only be considered provided a Nevis physical person or body corporate owns the vessel.

FRESHWATER FISH CULTURE IN JAPAN
HARVEY WILLOUGHBY INTRODUCTION The following observations on Japanese Fish Culture were made during field travel in Japan in the period October 20-27, 1971. SALTWATER TROUT CULTURE My only observation of trout culture in seawater was at Ogatsu Bay in Miyagi Prefecture. John Glude and I travelled to Ogatsu Bay in the afternoon of October 20, with Akimitsu Koganezawa, Chief of Shellfish and Fish Research for the Migayi Prefectural Station. The principal trout culture installation was a new commercial hatchery just getting into production at Karakuwa. This is a commercial venture operated by a Fishermen's Cooperative Association. The station consists of a small hatchery building and six large circular rearing ponds. Each pond has a supply line for fresh water and one for seawater. Each pond also is equipped with its own built-in recirculating system and filter. Since the rearing facilities were completed too late to rear fish for the current year's stocking of the rearing pens in Ogatsu Bay, the fish were to be shipped in from another location and acclimated to seawater at Karakuwa before being transferred to the seawater rearing pens. Koganezawa explained the procedure to be used as follows: The trout are hatched in fresh water and reared in the conventional manner until they are approximately 150 g each. At this time they are separated as to sex and the females are acclimated to seawater.

Winter 2001 Culture trials of freshwater eels Interest in eel farming in New Zealand began in the late 1960s, and in the early 1970s there were five trial eel farms, ranging from a traditional Japanese outdoor pond farm to an indoor intensive heated water system. By late 1975 only one farm remained. The reasons for farm closures were combinations of high overheads, slow growth, persistent disease problems and associated mortality, and uncertain supplies of glass eels. Today there is an upsurge of interest in eel farming to supply markets in Southeast Asia and Europe which have been affected, at least in part, by reduced supplies of glass eels of Northern Hemisphere species. Anguilla australis ) and the longfinned eel ( Anguilla dieffenbachii Several hundred glass eels were collected from Westland and Canterbury rivers by electric fishing in September 2000 and transferred to aquaria in a temperature-controlled room at the Christchurch laboratory. As there is no practical way to separate the two species, both of them were grown together in quarantine for a week, during which time they were treated with natural sea salt to get rid of any fungi and parasites. Water temperature was increased by 0.5 °C per day over the following 3 weeks to reach the target culture temperature of 25 °C. Feeding trials were conducted at temperatures of 15 °C and greater. Getting the eels to feed Initially, we fed the glass eels on hoki roe and laboratory-cultured brine shrimp nauplii at a rate equivalent to 4% of eel bodyweight per day. They adapted readily to both these foods.

If beaches were the measure of an island's wealth, Anguilla would be one of the richest places in the West Indies. Even though it has more than 30 strands, plus several more on nearby cays, the isle's beach riches are not so much about quantity as quality. The sand on most of the beaches here is a truly powder-soft mix that can be blindingly white, making that blue, blue sea appear even more vivid. So why has this small, laid-back island been so slow to develop? There are upscale resorts, fine restaurants, and a couple of nightclubs, but no casinos, golf courses, or duty-free shopping. An Anguilla holiday showcases the S factors: sun, sand, sea, and solitude. You could add snorkeling at the six marine parks, scuba diving the several wrecks, and shopping in quite a few new art galleries. But the sightseeing is limited, and the interior of the island is fairly featureless. Field Notes BEACHES SAILING Anguilla's national pastime makes for a great spectator sport. The sailboat-racing season runs from May through August, and during that time you can join the locals, first at cliffside vantage points to watch prized craft compete offshore, then at the post-race parties that carry on well into the night.
