The first inhabitants of the islands were pre-ceramic people called Sibonay. They are believed to have arrived about 2,100 years ago from Central America. The next people to colonise the islands were the Arawak who originated from the Orinoco River area in modern day Venezuela. They in turn were followed by the Caribs, again from South America. The Arawaks and Caribs left far more remains than the Sibonay and there are many archaeological sites scattered around the islands. These sites are marked with piles of shells, pieces of pottery, and old flint tools and some rock drawings on St. Kitts. St. Kitts was called Liamuiga , or "fertile land," by Caribs which was a reference to the island's rich and productive volcanic soil. Since 1983 the main mountain peak, a 3,792-foot extinct volcano, is called Mount Laimuiga. Nevis was called Oualie - pronounced "OO-A-LEE" - by the Caribs.

Vivanco and Robert Gordon Department of Anthropology University of Vermont July 1999 We also discussed more specifically the logistics of carrying out a program in collaboration with the ANT. We discussed the length of a program (6 to 8 weeks); the most effective size for a program (8-10 students); the possibilities for homestays (perhaps for no longer than three weeks during the course, and in which student fees pay families for room and board); the possibility of the ANT playing a role as local coordinator for the course (charging a fee to make logistical arrangements); and the possibility of setting up volunteering opportunities for students (we agreed that as a part of the program students should volunteer services beneficial to Anguillians, such as working as interns in an office like the ANT, as teachers' assistants in the schools, etc.). Ms. Christian also arranged for us to meet with the board members of the Anguilla Archaeological and Historical Society, which is one of the oldest non-governmental organizations on the island. The primary mission of this organization is to promote and facilitate the preservation of Anguilla's historical, architectural and archaeological heritage. Our main reason for meeting with this organization was to introduce ourselves and share our vision, to which board members responded favorably with several suggestions for possible projects (see below for a list of possible projects).

News Search 1Up Info Caribbean Islands Caribbean Islands Postwar Federation Efforts Britain's experiments in federation in its West Indian colonies had long been frustrated by regional insularity and parochialism. Regional cooperation increased during World War II, however, owing to the threat of a common outside enemy. The Anglo-American Caribbean Commission, established in 1942, played an important role in further regional integration efforts. The Second West India Conference in 1946 also was considered a landmark in international and regional cooperation because it provided the dependent territories their first opportunity to participate in a multilateral meeting aimed at forging joint policies with Britain and the United States. Because of decolonization plans, Britain placed renewed emphasis on political and economic federation in the postwar era (see Political Independence, ch.1). Its resources drained by the war, Britain began promoting self-government within the Commonwealth in general, a long process that involved gradually granting the West Indian islands autonomy and then independence. The formulas of federation and associated statehood (see Glossary) were ways of solving the British problem of establishing a system that maintained regional order after independence. Nevertheless, the small size of the British West Indian islands and their populations, their lack of resources, and their dependence on outside markets made the decolonization process especially difficult.
