What is Animal Science?
What type of courses will I take in Animal Science?

Students majoring in animal science at ASU receive a strong background in the biological and natural sciences. This foundation is essential for understanding the principles of animal production. Students also take courses in animal breeding, reproductive physiology, nutrition, meats and muscle biology, and management of livestock species. In addition, undergraduate students in agriculture take courses in business, agricultural economics, agriculture and the environment, and plant science. In keeping with the philosophy of developing well-rounded students, all undergraduates take courses in the humanities and social sciences. Students gain an appreciation of the entire agricultural industry, as well as, all the areas of animal science. What Career Opportunities are Available in Animal Science and Related Industries?
Animal agriculture will continue to face many challenges. To meet these challenges many innovative people will be needed. Recently, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported that more than 48,000 jobs will be created annually for college graduates with expertise in agriculture and related industries. The livestock industry and related fields are a major component of the United States' economy and career opportunities abound for both men and women trained in animal science. Animal Production/Management - this area is concerned with production of cattle, sheep, goats, horses, swine, and poultry. People entering this area are the cornerstone of the animal industry and should be superb businesspeople and knowledgeable in all areas of animal science.

WHAT IS ANIMAL SCIENCE?
Animal Science is concerned with the science and business of producing domestic livestock species, including but not limited to beef cattle, dairy cattle, horses, poultry, sheep, and pigs. An animal scientist applies principles of the biological, physical, and social sciences to the problems associated with livestock production and management. Animal Science is also concerned with foods of animal origin: meat, dairy foods, and eggs. The food industry is one of the largest and most important industries in Ireland.
If you are interested in efficient production of food animals, processing and consumption of high-quality meats and dairy products or the maintenance of animal health and well-being, then a career in one of the many animal sciences fields may be your key to a rewarding future. Professional education and training in the animal sciences can prepare you for challenging career opportunities in such areas as animal production, breeding, health maintenance and disease control, marketing, processing, distribution, and numerous allied service industries.
Animal scientists must have formal training and appropriate experience to learn and apply the complex principles involved in animal production, care, and use. Knowledge of such basic subjects as animal behavior and management, genetics, microbiology, nutrition, physiology, reproduction, and meat science is essential to persons entering most animal sciences professions. However, a farm or animal-related background is not required.

DIPLOMA COURSES AN SC 41.6
Introductory Livestock Production Science
Prerequisite(s):
Restricted to students enrolled in the Diploma in Agriculture program.
A course introducing students to the structure of the livestock industry in Canada and Saskatchewan. Includes a survey of government programs and management methods for the beef, dairy, swine, poultry and exotic livestock industries, with emphasis on sustainable farming operations. The course will also provide a scientific basis for farm animal production by exploring some of the basic biology related to animal anatomy, cell and nervous function, muscle physiology and regulation of growth and carcass quality.
AN SC 55.6
Animal Nutrition and Feeding Prerequisite(s):
Restricted to students enrolled in the Diploma in Agriculture program. An introduction to basic nutrition and digestion in monogastric and ruminant animals. Quantification of the nutrient contribution of feeds and the consequences of deficiencies/toxicities of individual nutrient classes. The second half of the course will review feed classification, emphasizing local ingredients and their use in animal feeds. Factors affecting ingredient quality, feed mixing systems and feed processing are discussed; with feed regulations and responsibility in feed mixing. Laboratory sessions cover interpretation of dietary requirements, feed analysis, feeding attributes of ingredients and feed formulation.
