Child Abuse, Domestic Violence, and Animal Abuse: Linking the Circles of Compassion for Prevention and Intervention
Frank R. Ascione, Ph.D., and Phil Arkow, Editors
Sponsored by the Latham Foundation
Book, 498 pages Evidence is mounting that animal abuse is frequently embedded in families scarred by domestic violence and child maltreatment, and often predicts the potential for other violent acts. This landmark book is a compilation of 45 original essays by 51 noted authorities who argue compellingly that violence prevention programs are enhanced by including animal protection personnel and by recognizing animal maltreatment as a human welfare issue. It includes original research, strategic interventions, and dramatic tales from survivors of multiple forms of family violence. The book is an historic step in helping professionals from the three fields recognize their interconnectedness and in encouraging cross-disciplinary training, prevention, and intervention.

Man charged with murder, burning of pregnant wife
By Rana Husseini and Atef Itmeh AMMAN - A 30-year-old man is currently in police custody, charged with murdering then burning his pregnant wife in Jerash Governorate late Monday night, according to official sources. The victim - unidentified by officials - was taken to Jerash Government Hospital after neighbours called the Civil Defence Department, one official source said. "The woman was dead when she arrived at the hospital. Her 30-year-old husband claimed his wife fainted and fell on a kerosene heater and died of burns," the source said. However, the source told The Jordan Times that hospital officials became suspicious of the husband's story after detecting bruises on the victim's head. They then transferred the body to the National Institute of Forensic Medicine in Amman, he added. A government autopsy performed on the victim indicated she had received multiple blows to the head with a blunt object, said a second official.

INTRODUCTION The greatest advances for alternatives have been achieved in the area of education. Although no comprehensive statistics have been kept on the numbers of animals used in education at any level, observers note a precipitous decline in the use of animals. At the same time, tools to improve or enhance the learning process have been developed. Many of these tools were created at North American veterinary schools, and those tools offer their advantages individualized, convenient, available for 24-hour access, nontoxic, reuseable, economic to other learning situations. This guide is intended to provide a brief list of resources on animal alternatives in higher education, with information on how to find additional and new material. It is intended to be helpful, but not definitive. The UC Center for Animal Alternatives has also published a guide to information resources in pre-college education , which cites other organizations and publications. We invite your suggestions for additions and corrections to these guides.

Information Resources for Animal Welfare and Alternatives: Animal Care and Use Committees The federal Animal Welfare Act requires that local institutional animal care and use committees ( IACUCs ) review certain local research protocols involving the use of animals. To assure a broad review, IACUCs include local members outside the animal care and research communities. As a result, IACUCs and research support staff become involved in the education of these members, their incorporation into committee problem solving, and in ethical decision making. This guide is intended to provide a brief list of resources on the functions and administration of institutional animal care and use committees, including these three areas. We invite your suggestions for additions and changes to this information guide.

About Us Adoption Lost and Found ... Look for Adoptable Animals
The A nimal W elfare L eague's Humane Education Department offers a valuable experience on the magical world of animals and the environment. The goal is to provide children and adults with clear, informative presentations for all living creatures. Our hands on presentations are age specific ranging from the preschool through the high school level. Animals are present during the classes and students are given the opportunity to meet the animals after the presentation. Classroom participation is encouraged throughout the presentation. Our information is delivered through a combination of interactive discussions, activities and audio visual materials. Pre and post materials are also available upon request to all educators and leaders

About Us Adoption Lost and Found ... Look for Adoptable Animals
ADOPTION PROGRAM
We accept all unwanted, stray or lost animals. We strive to secure quality homes for all the homeless animals placed in our care. We are open for adoption seven days a week with evening hours two nights a week. Each year more than 4,500 animals find permanent homes through our adoption program.
OFF-SITE ADOPTIONS
Our off-site adoption program managed by volunteers helps adopt and promote shelter services through the local PETsMART stores.
SPAY/NEUTER CLINIC
In 1972, 1972, the league opened its Spay/Neuter Clinic to help solve the pet over-population crisis. Our on-staff veterinarians perform these surgeries for a significantly reduced fee. The clinic is open to the general public. Learn more about Spay/Neuter.
HUMANE EDUCATION
PET THERAPY
Our volunteers visit nursing homes, hospitals and other long term care facilities in the Chicagoland area with their animals and animals from the shelter. The animals provide physical and emotional therapy for the residents of the various facilities. The residents provide socialization for the shelter animals. HUMANE INVESTIGATIONS AND ANIMAL RESCUES Our licensed humane investigators protect the health and safety of the animals and the community by investigating reports of abuse and cruelty and by rescuing animals in emergency situations. Our facility is equipped to handle any type of situation and houses any animal from a mountain lion cub found by a suburban resident to farm animals.
