Edmund Burke Public education is a vital link to the Quad City Animal Welfare Center's goal of providing safe, healthy environments for all Quad City area's pets. It is only through education and awareness that the staggering numbers of unwanted and abused animals can be reduced.
Our Education Center will address the following societal concerns:
  • A connection has been established between animal abuse and violence towards people.
  • The Education Center will offer a forum for programs to benefit the Quad City community. Such programs will include Spay/Neuter Awareness, Animal Abuse Investigation and Assistance and Medical Care and Behavior Seminars. This schedule will be available to school-age children, service organizations and interested groups from the general public.
  • In addition to our "in-house" activities, our shelter is eager to provide speakers to appear at both schools and a wide variety of area functions to discuss shelter operations, pet ownership, safety, and advancing in the no-kill movement. Presentations can be geared toward adults and/or children of any age.

The Meaning of Animal Welfare
Even if we believe that animals cannot have rights, it does not mean we can treat animals any way we please. As moral agents, we recognize our own obligation to treat animals humanelynot because it is their right, but because it is our responsibility. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has defined animal welfare as "a human responsibility that encompasses all aspects of animal well-being, including proper housing, management, nutrition, disease prevention and treatment, responsible care, human handling, and, when necessary, humane euthanasia."
The animal welfare view recognizes responsible animal use as natural, ethically appropriate and indispensable to our survival and quality of life. This philosophy is based on the premise that the mutual dependence of humans and animals on one another is part of the natural order, and a function of our joint evolution.
Scientists believe that the domestication of animals began about twelve thousand years ago, when wolves began to gravitate to the campfires that warmed ancient humans. Instinctively, the animals recognized that associating with humans increased their chances for survival, ultimately enhancing their ability to reproduce. Their food supply was assured, so they didn't have to compete with other predators to eat. The campfires kept them warm, reducing their own need to expend energy for that purpose. And man protected them from savage attacks from other predators.

Education
Our Humane Education Department
As a Humane Society we not only provide food, care and shelter for homeless animals but we also provide educational programs to our community. With the ever-increasing human and pet population in our world today, it is vital to spread the important messages of the Animal Welfare Society: the importance of spaying and neutering pets, of long-term commitment to a pet, kind animal treatment, and the link between domestic violence and animal abuse. In conjunction with the York County Coalition against Domestic Violence, our shelter is working on the issues surrounding domestic violence-for both humans and pets. The Animal Welfare Society has established the PAWS program to assist clients who are in need of assistance.
Programs:
Classroom Visits
We go directly to the children in grades K through high school, adjusting our subject matter to each grade level.
Field Trips
We welcome field trips from schools and community groups. Age-appropriate videos and a tour of our facility are included in a visit.
High School Community Service
As the number of area high schools that require community service grows, so does our program to include teenagers in the important work of our shelter. Students may satisfy all or part of their high school volunteer requirements with us, and we welcome the opportunity to work with the youth that want to help animals in our towns.

Consumer Animal Welfare Questions January 27, 2003
Farmscape Episode 1165
The Canadian Council of Grocery Distributors says education is key to addressing consumer questions related to the welfare of animals raised for food. In increasing numbers, Canadian consumers are turning to retailers for assurances that the animals used to produce the food they buy have been properly cared for. Canadian Council of Grocery Distributors Vice President Jeannie Cruikshank says it's sometimes news to consumers that there are already various codes of practice in place specific to the different commodities. Clip-Jeannie Cruikshank-Canadian Council of Grocery Distributors
Cruikshank says the Canadian Council of Grocery Distributors, in partnership with a number of commodity groups is preparing a project to communicate the existence of those codes. She's confident that will help form the foundation from which consumers will be able to gain a better understanding of the issue.

"Breaking the link between animal cruelty, abuse, neglect and violent crimes in society"
Humane Education
In Broad Terms:
Animal cruelty encompasses a range of behaviors harmful to animals, from neglect to malicious
killing. Most cruelty investigated by humane officers is unintentional neglect that can be
resolved through education.Intentional cruelty, or abuse, is
knowingly depriving an animal of food, water, shelter,
or veterinary care or maliciously torturing, maiming, mutilating, or killing an animal.
Animal "hoarding" is a situation that happens when someone has collected so many animals that they are unable to provide proper care for them.
Have you ever witnessed animal cruelty, abuse, neglect?.
Humane Education Group's mission is to educate citizens on these issues and empower the people to be able to report these crimes with accuracy and understanding.
As a former A.S.P.C.A. Humane Officer (St.Pete,FL) and
author/webmaster of several animal related sites,I am well aware of the growing problem there is not only in this country but in nations around the world regarding animal cruelty, abuse, neglect. Though the laws seem to be changing in some regions (in part due to pressure from various animal rights groups),I feel that humane education and awareness can be a vital source where as community citizens may report incidents of animal cruelty, abuse and neglect

WILDLIFE AT OAKTREE
Oaktree Primary School is in the suburbs of Swindon surrounded by housing estates. The school has a great deal of land which has not been developed for wildlife and has been left derelict for a number of years. Sharon Richards, Science Co-ordinator and the Head Teacher Ann Harris, approached Born Free asking for help to develop their school grounds for wildlife and the National Curriculum!
Oaktree School has plenty of room for development Naturally we were delighted to be provided with the opportunity to help encourage children to investigate their own environment and improve the grounds for wildlife. The first stage of the project was to seek permission and inform the teachers, caretaker, Governors and LEA that the project was going to happen. Funding was considered and applications sent to a variety of grant making bodies. Every one at Oaktree was enthusiastic to start making a change for wildlife and the children. Before starting the exciting part of drawing up plans and construction, many observations, investigations and planning need to be undertaken and it is vital that the children are involved at every stage.

http://www.alexandriaanimals.org/~awla/league_services.cfm
The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization and is the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) for Alexandria. The League is an animal sheltering and welfare organization focused on community responsiveness, professional animal care, dynamic education, compatible adoptions and a philosophy of compassion in all we do. Animal Adoptions The fee for cats, dogs, large birds and ferrets adopted from the League is $50. Other animals are $20. If the animal is not altered, spay/neuter surgery must be paid for at the time he is adopted. The adoption fee does not include the spay/neuter fee for unaltered animals, which will be an additional $50 to $150, depending on the animal and the veterinarian selected. It is the law in Virginia that all dogs and cats adopted from shelters must be spayed or neutered. Citizen's Assistance We take as much care to keep animals out of our shelter as we take of the animals in our shelter. The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria receives hundreds of calls every week from people seeking advice about an animal behavior problem, or reporting lost and found animals. Our trained staff counsel callers on training, nutrition, health care and hundreds of topics, with the goal of helping people solve problems with training or behavior modification before they decide to give up the animal. Staff review new arrivals at the shelter and found reports to try to reunite lost animals with their families. Reduced-Cost Spay/Neuter Program

AVMA Policy on Animal Welfare and Animal Rights
Animal welfare is a human responsibility that encompasses all aspects of animal well-being, from proper housing and nutrition to preventive care, treatment of disease, and when necessary, humane euthanasia. The AVMA's commitment to animal welfare is unsurpassed. However, animal welfare and animal rights are not the same. AVMA cannot endorse the philosophical views and personal values of animal rights advocates when they are incompatible with the responsible use of animals for human purposes, such as food and fiber, and for research conducted to benefit both humans and animals.
Guiding Principles
The AVMA encourages all veterinarians to offer their time and special expertise to aid in developing a better understanding of all aspects of the welfare of animals. Veterinarians are also encouraged to aid in developing guidelines and standards that may be necessary to assure proper stewardship of animals.

Careers in Animal Welfare
Career paths are highly dependant upon the individuals interests and background. However, general areas include:
  • Humane Movement . The humane movement is a significant employer, but until very recently there was little specialized university education that prepared people to work in this field. Students often develop research and communication skills together with broad exposure to animal welfare science, animal ethics, and current animal welfare issues. This makes an excellent preparation for a career in the humane movement.
  • Animal Industries or Related Government Positions . The animal industries and related government departments are facing an increasing need to deal with animal welfare issues, but few people in the animal industries have specialized education in animal welfare.
