It took three baths to reveal the beautiful Australian Shepherd underneath coats of reddish mud and dust. After several weeks with us in foster care, a longer period with a great Aussie Rescue foster family, and a brief inappropriate placement, Harley went to his "forever" home with someone who appreciates him as he deserves. Who could possibly not appreciate a dog like this? Yes, all three of the pictures below also show rescued dogsone from a shelter, two from breed rescue. Right: Kohl, who arrived with severe demodectic mange and bad hips, belonged to a student who couldn't cope with his terrible health problems. As a responsible owner who wanted the best for the dog, he listed Kohl with German Shepherd Rescue. The picture you see here was taken nearly eight years later. Today Kohl is going strong at nearly ten years of age. At left (click for larger picture): Kirsten, who was found tied to a shelter fence, and weighing only 43 pounds, regained excellent health. She lived several more happy years despite a chronic condition, Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency.

It is not possible for the whole Council to undertake detailed studies of the issues being investigated. Most of the Council's work is delegated to small working groups, comprising a cross-section of members. There is a heavy responsibility on these members to provide thoroughly researched and carefully considered advice for discussion and endorsement at Council. Discussions within the working groups generally remain confidential until proposals have been considered and endorsed by the full Council. In 2001 the work of all these groups was delayed by considerations of the animal welfare implications of the Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak, culminating in the publication in January 2002 of the Report 'Foot and Mouth Disease 2001 and Animal Welfare: Lessons for the Future'. Farm Assurance Schemes In the past few years there has been a proliferation of farm assurance schemes. Many of these schemes were known to FAWC, but their impact in terms of animal welfare has not been appraised. In August 2001, FAWC produced its Interim Report on the Animal Welfare Implications of Farm Assurance Schemes in response to a request by, Mr Elliot Morley, Parliamentary Under Secretary at DEFRA with responsibility for animal welfare. This report considered the general framework of farm assurance schemes to assess their capacity, in principle, to deliver assurance on the welfare standards under which farm animals are kept. Recommendations in the report were primarily aimed at stimulating the review and development of the animal welfare component of farm assurance standards and improving communication with the consumer.

Alternatives to Intensive Confinement Systems. general Farm animal welfareCrisis or opportunity for agriculture? by Marlene Halverson.
http://www.awionline.org/farm/
Increasingly, farm animals are raised in close confinement in "factories" where they suffer severe deprivation. AWI works to halt these intensive farming practices and replace them with methods which are both humane and practical. Animal factories put family farmers out of business, endanger public health and pollute our air and water. It all begins with cruelty to animals in the factory.

at 1-19 Cormack Road,
Wingfield, South Australia The League operates on a busy schedule, still looking after stray and lost animals, with the dedicated staff and volunteers working to raise money for the future survival of this service. The League receives no direct Government financial support other than minor assistance for providing a pound service for many northern councils. The League is a recognised "not for profit" charity. We need members and financial support to achieve our objectives so any help you can give is greatly appreciated. Our operations continue every day of the year; after all, someone has to look after the homeless animals on Christmas Day. This is the only day of the year that we are not open to the public, looking for their lost pets or seeking a new one to give a loving home to.
