68. INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY
Merton identifies 4 types of adaptations for people experiencing anomie, each contrastingwith path of conformity. Various introduction to sociology textbooks.
http://husky1.stmarys.ca/~evanderveen/wvdv/classical_crim_theory/merton.htm
ROBERT MERTON His ideas stem from the traditional sociological theory of Functionalism and from Emile Durkheim. Functionalism: question is what is function of deviance and conformity; tries to explain why deviance continues to exist despite pressures to conform and obey, not on how person comes to commit deviant act or why on some occasions crimes do and do not occur unifying force, social and social stability standard and boundary setting, defining and maintaining limits of proper behaviour safety valve (tolerate some release) mechanism of social control what is deviant may vary but deviance is found in all societies Merton identifies problems with Functionalism and its assumptions of deviance: Assumption 1: harmonious integration of all parts of society deviance may be functional for some and not for others Assumption 2: a particular pattern of social interaction exists and thus must be functional consider net balance of positive and negative consequences of said patterns Assumption 3: genuine societal needs can only be served by structural unit which appears to positively or functionally contribute to fulfillment of such needs consider latent and manifest functions, consider other alternatives for fulfilling needs (manifest functions are those recognized and intended, latent functions are those unrecognized and unintended)

People and Perspective Approach to Sociology I. The People Approach 1. Karl Marx (1818-1883) Time Frame:
  • Early industrial capitalism in France and Great Britain French Revolution 1789-1799 1848 Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels publish the Communist Manifesto. 1848 The Austrian revolution begins in Vienna; chancellor Metternich resigns. 1848 The Revolutions of 1848 break out in Europe.

Concept of Conflict
  • Relations in production involve conflict. Conflict is rooted in the economic sphere where people fight for resources. Even in the Family!! Some people own the means of production, and others do not. Different classes have different interests.

Surplus value (Profit): True value - cost of subsistence Cost of subsistence is the time a worker needs to work to produce a true value that is enough for him to survive. True value : value that is achieved on the market
Example: A worker sews 500 shirts a month that are sold for $10.000.
For herself and her family, she needs about $1500 a month.
In this case the surplus value is $8.500

Introduction to Sociology
Lecture: Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim, and Max Weber
Instructor: Jerry Daday
University of New Mexico
Karl Marx: 1818-1883
Born in Prussia (modern day Germany/Austria)
Raised in a middle-class family – father was a lawyer
In 1841 – when he was 23 yrs old, he received his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Berlin
A very complex man – studied numerous topics. Mainly is known for his work in the field of political economy and capitalism
Capitalism: an economic system where natural resources (i.e. wood, oil, gas, etc) and the means to produce goods (i.e. in a factory) are privately owned. Workers exchange their labor for a paycheck from the owners. Very different than the Feudal system which preceded it.
Karl Marx
Young Marx: Very idealistic – hoped for change
Industrialization, Urbanization and Capitalism – growing very rapidly
Obsessed with inequality – wanted a worker revolution
Marx saw society divided into two groups
Proletariat – Working Class
Bourgeoisie – Owning Class
For Marx – the heart of industrialization and capitalism was rooted in inequalities and hardships
The men and women of the working class and the poor
The harsh working conditions in the factories, fields, and mines

OBJECTIVES
There are two, often competing, objectives to teaching and learning sociological theory:
(1) It is necessary to cover considerable ground, in terms of history, biography, and concepts; and (2) It is essential to pay close attention to primary texts, without which the history, biography and concepts would make no lasting impression. In order to achieve both objectives, this course will undertake an intensive review of the times, figures, and ideas that form the basis to theorizing sociologically. We will examine several texts intensively in order to see what each theorist was trying to grasp and understand. You will have the opportunity to write two kinds of papers during the course. One type will call for straightforward accounts of what you learn about these theorists, their theories, and the times in which they theorized. The other type will call for the unpacking of specific passages in a theorist's work, in order to link those passages and that work with present reality. REQUIRED TEXTS:
Masters of Sociological Thought (2nd ed.)

This introduction will include questioning the definitions of crime and deviance (i.e., Why is some behaviour labeled ‘deviant’ or ‘criminal’ while another behaviour is not?). We will examine various theoretical explanations (i.e., How do sociologists explain the occurance of deviant or criminal behaviour?). We will also examine and question the methods used by sociologists who study crime and deviance. In the final section of this course we will look at the practice of crime and deviance as we examine topics such at drugs, sexual abuse, murder and mental illness.
