A long-term study of patients in Rochester, Minn., with the eating disorder anorexia nervosa found that their survival rates did not differ from the expected survival rates of others of the same age and sex. The results, published in the March issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, add to the knowledge of anorexia nervosa and point to other areas that need greater study from researchers. "Although our data suggest that overall mortality is not increased among community patients with anorexia nervosa in general, these findings should not lead to complacency in clinical practice because deaths do occur," says L. Joseph Melton, III, M.D., Mayo Clinic epidemiologist and an author of the report.

Zusammenfassung
Allgemeines

Everybody eats. We do so both because we need to and because we enjoy it. However, as with all human behaviour, there are huge differences between people. Some eat more, some eat less, some put on weight easily, others do not. And some people go to such extremes that they harm themselves, by eating too much or too little. As a result they may harm their health and come to the attention of doctors. This leaflet deals with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Although it is easier to talk about them as different conditions, individual patients often suffer from symptoms of both. Indeed, it often happens that bulimia develops after a period of months or years of anorexic symptoms. Women suffer from these disorders 10 times as often as men, and so this leaflet refers to the sufferer as 'she'. Although often thought of as adult problems, these disorders most often start in the teenage years while the sufferer is still at home Anorexia Fear of fatness
Under-eating
Excessive loss of weight
Vigorous exercise

Anorexia usually starts in the mid-teens and affects 1 fifteen-year-old girl in every 150. Occasionally it may start earlier, in childhood, or later, in the 30s or 40s. Girls from professional or managerial families are perhaps more likely to develop it than girls from working-class backgrounds. Other members of the family have often had similar symptoms.

They say size isn't important. But when does a girl become a woman? Is it when she is seventeen? Or when she has her first kiss? No, it is when she no longer looks like a girl. But that isn't all of it. It can be a problem discovering what sort of woman-sized woman to be. It is not just about being fat or thin. It is about being gay or straight, or a mother or a daughter, working, playing, anything that makes life what it is. It is about control of your impulses and destiny. Sometimes it seems impossible to control all this. Or if you do everything might go wrong. You might not fit anymore and everything will fall apart.

Anorexia nervosa and bulimia are characterized by an abnormal fear of obesity, distorted body image, and subsequent abnormal eating patterns. Anorexia is marked by obsessive fasting; bulimia by eating binges followed by self-induced vomiting or the use of laxatives. The effects of these disorders range from mild weight loss to delayed sexual development, heart problems, depression, and even death. Both conditions have their roots in social pressures; most cases occur among middle- and upper-class adolescent girls. Some specialists distinguish a third eating disorder, binge eating disorder, which is characterized by frequent periods of uncontrolled, compulsive eating, resulting in obesity and distress; it is typically associated with anxiety or depression. Other eating disorders include rumination disorder, which generally occurs during infancy and involves repeated regurgitation; and pica, found primarily among young children and characterized by the eating of various non-nutritive substances, such as plaster, paint, or leaves.

Anorexia Nervosa
The most common element surrounding ALL Eating Disorders is the inherent presence of a low self esteem Anorexia Nervosa
It is not easy to understand a person suffering Anorexia. People living with the illness often have a low self-esteem and a tremendous need to control their surroundings and emotions. Quite often the Eating Disorder is a unique reaction to an array of external and internal conflicts, such as stress, anxiety, and unhappiness. Anorexia is a negative way to cope with these emotions. "...starvation fills a void inside when it's approval from you I crave. The desire for food is gone and you are there again... yelling... so negative. Times like this filled with the pounding urge to run far away and disappear..." The person suffering with Anorexia may be abnormally sensitive about being perceived as fat, or have a massive fear of becoming fat though not all people living with Anorexia have this fear. They may be afraid of losing control over the amount of food they eat, accompanied by the desire to control their emotions and reactions to their emotions. With a low self-esteem and need for acceptance they will turn to obsessive dieting and starvation as a way to control not only their weight, but their feelings and actions regarding the emotions attached. Some also feel that they do not deserve pleasure out of life, and will deprive themselves of situations offering pleasure (including eating).

People who intentionally starve themselves or severely restrict their food intake suffer from an eating disorder called anorexia nervosa
What are the causes of anorexia nervosa?
The exact cause of anorexia nervosa remains unknown. People with anorexia may believe that they would be happier and more successful if they were thin. Anorexics tend to be perfectionists. They want everything in their lives to be perfect. People suffering from this illness are typically good students and are involved in many school and community activities. They tend to blame themselves if things in their life are less than perfect. Many anorexics suffer from errors in thinking or perceptions. They incorrectly believe they need to lose weight to find happiness. Body image distortions are common place among anorexics. Others have had difficulties in relationships and manifest these problems through their eating habits. Anorexia can also be the delayed result of unresolved conflicts or painful experiences from childhood.
