anorexia NERVOSA. anorexia Nervosa occurs when an adolescent refuses to maintainbody weight at or above a minimal normal weight for age and height.
http://www.aacap.org/about/glossary/anorexia.htm
A NOREXIA N ERVOSA Anorexia Nervosa occurs when an adolescent refuses to maintain body weight at or above a minimal normal weight for age and height. The weight loss is usually self-imposed and is usually less than 85% of expected weight. The condition occurs most frequently in females, however, it can occur in males. Generally, the teenager has an intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat even though underweight. Self evaluation of body weight and shape may be distorted and there may be denial of the potential health hazards caused by the low body weight. Physical symptoms can include:
  • absence of regular menstrual cycles
  • dry skin
  • low pulse rate, and
  • low blood pressure
Behavioral changes commonly occur such as:
  • social withdrawal
  • irritability
  • moodiness, and
  • depression
Without treatment, this disorder can become chronic and with severe starvation, some teenagers may die. For additional information see the following Facts for Families

ANDREA GORDON
Stamford Hospital/Columbia University
Dr. Gordon is Assistant Director, Family Practice Residency Program, Stamford Hospital/Columbia University, Stamford, Conn. If you are a practicing physician, you have patients with eating disorders. You may not be aware of the female patient who regularly binges on thousands of calories and then forces herself to vomit, or of the teenaged boy who aims to eat less than 400 calories a day while exercising rigorously. It is estimated that in the United States, five to ten million women and up to one million men have an eating disorder. These may be underestimates, especially if one takes into account the diagnosis of binge eating disorder that was introduced in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) of the American Psychiatric Association. Anorexia nervosa has the poorest prognosis of all the eating disorders; however, the prognosis is moderately improved if the disorder is detected and treated in its early stages. To that end, this article will highlight signs and symptoms that may be indicative of anorexia and interventions that are within the scope of the primary care physician. In addition, a brief description of some of the theories of anorexia's origins may help physicians to prevent the disorder in some patients.
Etiology
Theories about the causes of anorexia nervosa include both the psychological and biologic. One psychological theory is that food intake and weight are areas that a young woman can control in a life otherwise dictated by an overly involved family, which may include a parent who is unduely concerned with weight or appearance.

Anorexia nervosa
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Anorexia Nervosa is a form of eating disorder where the sufferer believes that she (or in 10 - 20 % of cases, he) is overweight, even when they are actually of a normal or low weight. This perception, known as "distorted body image" causes the sufferer great anxiety and can trigger obsessive-compulsive-style behaviours related to food and weight. The sufferer will often go to great lengths to lose what they perceive as excess weight; overexercise and/or severe restriction of caloric intake are the most common. Some anorexics incorporate bulimic behaviour into their illness

THE PSYCHOANALYSIS OF ANOREXIA AND BULIMIA
by Em Farrell
About eighty per cent of women suffer from Sub-Clinical Eating Disorder, and twenty per cent will manifest full-blown anorexia or bulimia during their lifetime. This is the first overview of the psychoanalytic and psychodynamic literature on these disorders.
Comments:
'This fine book explores in both a sophisticated and accessible way the inner experience of patients with eating disorders. The author is to be congratulated for her nuanced appreciation of the self-alienation that is so common in these patients and the challenges that this presents in the treatment setting. The book details the maturation of the psychoanalytic perspective on these conditions as well as the variety of current points of view. The author's own perspective is Kleinian, an orientation that she represents with thoughtfulness and convincing clinical immediacy. 'Em Farrell's book is a valuable addition to our evolving literature and is one that is deserving of admiration and broad readership. I recommend it highly.' Harvey J. Schwartz, M.D., psychoanalyst, editor of "Bulimia: Psychoanalytic Treatment and Theory"

Patient Notes
Anorexia
VOL 99 / NO 6 / JUNE 1996 / POSTGRADUATE MEDICINE Anorexia is a serious eating disorder in which people literally starve themselves, sometimes to death. Even if they become emaciated, they still see themselves as fat. Who has this eating disorder?
In the past, it was considered a disorder of teenaged girls and young women, and they still compose the largest group. However, more and more, anorexia is being found in both sexes and a wide range of ages. The disorder is even found in children who have gotten a message (from movies, TV, friends, or family) that appearance is all-important. Some people are especially susceptible, such as athletes and those in professions that emphasize thinness and build, such as dancers, gymnasts, runners, wrestlers, and models. What are the signs of anorexia?
People with this disorder are not just slender. They weigh at least 15% less than they should, and they often have many of the following traits:
  • Their goal is a "perfect" body. Good or even great is not enough.
  • They are terrified of being fat.

Hayley used to love going to the food court in the mall with her friends, but now just the thought of it fills her with dread. Besides, she doesn't really even have time to hang with her friends anymore since she's upped her exercise schedule to include even more running and aerobics. She doesn't feel like herself lately - she's having a hard time concentrating in school and she's always so tired. She's really thin, too - so how come every time Hayley passes a mirror, she sees an overweight girl staring back at her? If you know someone in your school who is like Hayley - or if you recognize yourself in her - you're not alone. Hayley has an eating disorder, a condition that occurs when a person tries to become thin in an unhealthy way. Eating disorders are very common in America - between 5 and 10 million people have them. In fact, it's thought that one in 10 college-age girls has some type of eating disorder. But eating disorders don't strike only girls in college; many girls in high school and even junior high (or middle school) have them, too. It's estimated that 1% of American teens has an eating disorder. That means if your class has 400 students, probably about four of them have this condition. Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa
The two most common types of eating disorders are anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa , more commonly known as anorexia and bulimia.
