Tumour bank will save lives

A new research bank in the UK, for discarded tumours, is being set up which will help treat future cancer patients. Instead of tumours killing patients, they will be used to help save the lives of other people. The new "tumour bank" is being set up by the UK Department of Health, cancer charities and the Medical Research Council, through the National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI).

Defining generalized anxiety disorder At one time or another, all of us have feelings of worry, nervousness, or uneasiness in our daily lives. But when the worry becomes hard to control, prominent, and persistent (present for more than 6 months), it may begin to have a serious negative impact on our daily activities and well-being. That's when doctors may diagnose the disorder called generalized anxiety disorder. Generalized anxiety disorder can make it difficult for us to concentrate at work, function at home, or just "get on" with life. If this is how you've been feeling, you should know you are not alone - an estimated 1 in 20 adult Americans have generalized anxiety disorder.
What causes generalized anxiety disorder? There are a number of possible causes of generalized anxiety disorder:
  • Stressful events in our lives Hereditary factors (generalized anxiety disorder has been shown to run in families) Overproduction of serotonin (sear-a-toe-nin), a chemical produced in the brain (other chemicals may also be responsible)

46. Social Phobia - The Largest Anxiety Disorder
A short history of the problem, and a look at current cognitivebehavioral treatment is provided.Category Health Mental Health Disorders Anxiety Social Anxiety......Social anxiety disorder (social phobia) affects 7% of the population. It is thelargest anxiety disorder and the third largest mental health problem today.
http://www.angelfire.com/biz/socialphobia/
Social Phobia: The Largest Anxiety Disorder Social Phobia (social anxiety disorder) is defined as the fear (anxiety) of being judged, criticized, and evaluated by other people. This fear is recognized as irrational by the individual; nevertheless, the fear of judgment in social situations persists. People who have social phobia usually find it difficult to be introduced to other people ("I wonder what they're thinking about me; I'll bet they don't like me"), attracting attention to the self or being the center of attention, being watched while doing something ("They don't like what I'm doing; I must be making a fool of myself"), and feeling insecure and self-conscious in most public settings. Life is difficult for the person with social phobia because they feel they do not fit in with every one else. Something is wrong with them. Therefore, it is easier to stay away and avoid all contact with people in social situations, whenever possible. Dr. Richard G. Heimberg of Temple University, the leading researcher of social phobia, notes that people with social phobia experience many negative life problems as a result of their social anxiety: 1. they are less likely to marry than others

More rarely it may involve a fear of using a public restroom, eating out, talking on the phone or writing in the presence of other people, such as when signing a check. People with social phobia aren’t necessarily shy at all.
They can be completely at ease with people most of the time,
but in particular situations, they feel intense anxiety.
About 80% of people who suffer from social phobia find relief from their symptoms when treated with cognitive-behavioral therapy The medications that have proven effective include antidepressants called MAO inhibitors. People with a specific form of social phobia called performance phobia have been helped by drugs called beta-blockers. For example, musicians or others with this anxiety may be prescribed a beta-blocker for use on the day of a performance. Grant Me The Serenity... Anxiety Disorders
The anxiety disorders are the most common, or frequently occurring, mental disorders. They encompass a group of conditions that share extreme or pathological anxiety as the principal disturbance of mood or emotional tone. Anxiety, which may be understood as the pathological counterpart of normal fear, is manifest by disturbances of mood, as well as of thinking, behavior, and physiological activity.
    Types of Anxiety Disorders
The anxiety disorders include panic disorder (with and without a history of agoraphobia), agoraphobia (with and without a history of panic disorder), generalized anxiety disorder, specific phobia, social phobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, acute stress disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder (DSM-IV). In addition, there are adjustment disorders with anxious features, anxiety disorders due to general medical conditions, substance-induced anxiety disorders, and the residual category of anxiety disorder not otherwise specified (DSM-IV). Panic Attacks and Panic Disorder
    unexpected situationally bound
, or situationally predisposed Panic attacks are not always indicative of a mental disorder, and up to 10 percent of otherwise healthy people experience an isolated panic attack per year (Barlow, 1988; Klerman et al., 1991). Panic attacks also are not limited to panic disorder. They commonly occur in the course of social phobia, generalized anxiety disorder, and major depressive disorder (DSM-IV).

What Is Generalized Anxiety Disorder?
There's no disputing that anxiety and worry are normal parts of life. Whether it's a wedding, job, or even a sporting event, people can get a little anxious about how things will turn out. Besides being a common emotion, moderate amounts of anxiety can often be a great motivator by helping people cram for an exam, complete a work assignment, or deliver an energized speech. But when the worry becomes persistent, unrealistic, and a habitual way of approaching situations, an individual may be suffering from generalized anxiety disorder. Having this disorder means always anticipating disaster, or often worrying about money, health, family, or work. Unlike other anxiety disorders (such as posttraumatic stress disorder, panic disorder, social phobia, or obsessive-compulsive disorder), generalized anxiety disorder is not specific to any single event; nothing seems to provoke it. In fact, simply the thought of getting through the day can trigger anxiety in someone with generalized anxiety disorder. The first step toward feeling better is recognizing that you may be experiencing the symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder. The next step is to see your health care professional. Only after generalized anxiety disorder is diagnosed can you begin on the road to recovery.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder By: Michael Appleman, M.S. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is when persistent worry and anxiety about your health, work, money or family last for at least six months, even when there are no signs of trouble in your life. Doctors have found that constant and uncontrollable worry and anxiety may be due to a GAD. GAD is a long-term illness that can last for many years before it is even diagnosed and treated. This is why many people with GAD believe their anxiousness is purely a part of their personality. All of us must realize that GAD is an illness that can and will interfere with our every day life and is connected with physical symptoms. Major Symptoms of GAD The major symptoms of GAD contain worry, anxiety and tension. If you think you might have GAD, ask yourself the following questions: 1. Do I worry excessively about minor issues? 2. Am I nervous most of the time? 3. Am I stressed most days? If you answered yes to all three questions, may mean that you are suffering from GAD. You should consult your doctor for the proper diagnosis. Other Symptoms of GAD *Restlessness *Exhausting Easily *Struggle Concentrating *Muscle Tension *Uneasy Sleep Due to these symptoms being physical in nature, the emotional aspects of GAD can go unnoticed by your doctor. As a result, many people visit their doctor several times because of these physical symptoms before GAD is diagnosed and treated. In order to help the doctor become more aware of your problem and make the correct diagnosis, talk to him/her about all your symptoms including any constant worries that you may have.
