Math Major Math Minor Honors [ Applied Math Concentration ] Computer Science Concentration High School Speaking Concentration in Applied Mathematics The Applied Mathematics Concentration offers an introduction to the process of modeling natural or social phenomena by mathematical systems. The goal of the concentration is to foster skills in the development of an appropriate variety of mathematical tools, to acquire an appreciation for the limitations of a given mathematical model and for modeling as a dynamic process, and to experience this process within a specific domain of application. The concentration has two tracks: a natural science emphasis and a social science emphasis. Either track is open to all students, regardless of major. Requirements for Natural Science Track

    Applied Math
If you concentrate on the branch called applied math, your career opportunities are endless. Because the study of mathematics enhances critical thinking and empowers you with an ability to reason both inductively and deductively, it provides a strong background, one sought after by employers. You will be needed to
    (a)
understand a problem and a potential solution,
    (b)
identify the mathematical aspects of the problem,
    (c)
    do the mathematical analysis, and
    (d)
    interpret and communicate the results.
People who have concentrated on mathematics in college are now working in all areas of the government, including the Department of Defense, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and the Department of Commerce. In addition, you will find former math majors in such diverse areas as architectural, surveying, and engineering services, cryptology, robotics, and thermal and structural analysis. Professionals also find that mathematics is necessary to establish frameworks for analyzing problems in biology, ecology, and geology, as well as in the study of demographics. Such diversity in career opportunities necessitates diversity in course work. The following four sections list suggested courses for those of you interested in emphasizing computers, business, and engineering-related subjects. There are also descriptions of typical jobs in these areas. However, don't forget that a graduate degree in applied mathematics (see Section 5.2.1) can also be extremely valuable for these same careers.

Bjorn Birnir is interested in infinite-dimensional dynamical systems and their applications to partial differential equations.
Hector Ceniceros is interested in the design, analysis, and application of highly accurate and dynamically adaptive numerical methods for a large class of nonlinear problems such as water waves, two-phase flows, flows in porous media, and nonlinear optics. A common denominator in these problems is the investigation of how small scale phenomena (such as surface tension or short-wave dispersion) can affect macroscopic behavior (multi-scale phenomena).
Carlos Garcia-Cervera is interested in problems arising in Material Science and Condensed Matter Physics, and in particular, the dynamic and static properties of complex systems. His research interests are diverse, and include fields such as Ferromagnetism, Superconductivity, Liquid Crystals, and Polymeric Fluids. His approach to these problems is flexible in the techniques employed, which include modelling, asymptotic analysis, and numerical simulation.

Applied Mathematics at the University of Michigan is presently expanding rapidly. With the addition of 8 new faculty positions in Applied and Interdisciplinary Mathematics, the University of Michigan is making a concerted effort to become one of the top applied math departments in the country. It is already ranked as the ninth best applied math department in the U.S.A. ( U.S. News and World Report Rankings ), and so has an excellent base upon which to build. Because the University of Michigan also has one of the best Engineering Schools, and one of the best Medical Schools in the U.S.A., it provides an optimal environment for the highest quality research and education in applied and interdisciplinary mathematics. Research interests of the faculty range from mathematical physics and mathematical biology, through to computational fluid dynamics, numerical analysis, control theory, cosmology, and nonlinear optics. In many of the books chosen for this curriculum, young children ages 4-8 will enjoy finding practical ways to use the new concepts they are learning in Applied Math
For the youngest, there are many opportunities for counting practice, whether it is counting the stars in a special illustration or pickets of a fence in another. Finding and counting all the corks in Ferdinand can be fun as well as a time for the teacher to see and hear their student count actual objects.
Hexagons are covered in the material of The Bee Tree and an introduction to telling time in The Finest Horse in Town
Concepts of relative size, measuring, time and money are all found in the stories of children's picture books. A book about quilts for instance offers a chance to talk about geometric shapes. Because the concepts are linked to an enjoyable story, your student will remember them with pleasure.
If time is available make math manipulatives using ideas from the story illustrations. For instance, if you are going to read a book for a week that is about trains, make flash cards with the facts printed inside train cars. Use bright cheerful colors and write the answers on the back. Laminating the cards will help them last. The cards can also contain any term or new concept on one side with the definition on the other.

Master Of Science In Applied Mathematics
    Description
Our Master of Science in Applied Mathematics is intended to prepare students for a wide range of possible careers putting mathematics to work on real-world problems. The program is designed for flexibility to allow for the many possible directions applied mathematics careers can take. The possibilities range from industrial careers, to Ph.D. programs, or teaching in the Community College System. Local industry, including biotech, the U.S. Navy, HNC, SAIC and GA have lucrative positions available for our graduates. Students should assemble a specific program of study in consultation with an adviser to make sure that all of the coursework is appropriately aimed at the student's specific career objectives. To assist with advising, the student is expected to write a short description (100-200 words) concerning his or her particular interests and expectations from the program. Based on this description, an appropriate faculty member will be consulted to help design the student's program. After the first year of study, the student should select a faculty member as an adviser for advanced study leading to a thesis. By the end of the first year the student should file an Official Program which has been approved by the graduate adviser.
