The program includes courses in all levels of standard and colloquial Arabic. A course in "Business Arabic" – a mixture of standard and Egyptian Arabic – is being developed, as is a Web-based language project, "Arabic-Online" (www.linguistics.uiuc.edu/arabic/). In the next two years the UI will hire a professor of Arabic literature, and a minor in Islamic studies will be offered. The UI program is "one of the biggest in the country in terms of numbers of students who regularly take Arabic," says the coordinator of the program, Elabbas Benmamoun, a professor of linguistics. "Also, we are one of the few programs that offer both standard and colloquial Arabic."

Lectureship strengthens commitment to Arabic language
    By Seth Sanders
    News Office
Donors Albert Joseph and Talat Othman (left to right), Professor Rashid Khalidi, Professorial Lecturer Farouk Mustafa, Dean Janel Mueller and donor Jamal Alwattar gather at a recent celebration in honor of the first Ibn Rushd Lectureship, to which Mustafa has been named. Donor Antoin Rezko, who attended the event, is not pictured.
Last month, he was awarded the first Ibn Rushd Lectureship in Modern Arabic Language. The award will permanently provide for the teaching of first- and second-year classes, keeping pace with rapidly rising interest in Arabic on campus.
Farouk Mustafa addresses faculty members and the donors whose gifts provided funding for the first Ibn Rushd Lectureship in Modern Arabic Language, to which Mustafa has been named. Khalidi added that the simple fact of having a University chair with an Arabic name would be important to Arab and Muslim students, symbolizing their contribution to the culture at Chicago. Othman commented that the donors, who originally suggested the name, thought it would be representative of teaching and learning at Chicago.

Introduction Arabic is one of the world's major languages, spoken in a broad belt extending from the Arabian Peninsula across the Fertile Crescent and on to the Atlantic Ocean. It is the official language of Saudi Arabia, Yemen, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Sudan, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco, making it the mother tongue of about 215 million people. In addition many millions of Moslems in other countries have some knowledge of Arabic, it being the language of the Moslem religion and of the sacred Koran. in 1974 Arabic was made the sixth official language of the United Nations. Great languages spring from great empires, and Arabic is no exception. A Semitic language closely related to Hebrew, its use was confined to the Arabian Peninsula until the 7th century A.D. But the spectacular Islamic conquests of that century carried the language far beyond its original borders, and it supplanted almost all the previous languages of Iraq, Syria, Egypt, and North Africa. After further conquest in succeeding centuries Arabic was spoken as far east as Afghanistan and as far west as Spain.

Arabic Language The Arabic Language Arabic (Al Arabiya), a Semitic idiom, is the main language spoken in Syria. The Arabic language was adopted and spread over a large area of land in the Seventh Century. This language has very old roots going back to the Assyrians in the Ninth Century BC. Other languages related to Arabic are Babylonian, Hittite (or Hourrite), Hebrew and Aramean. Arabic was probably first written in the Second and Third Centuries, the Lakhmides tribe in Southern Mesopotamia. The Arabic alphabet has a few extra letters that do not exist in the normal Latin and Germanic languages. Arabic is also written from Right to Left. 'KH' should be pronounced like the German 'ch' in 'NACHT'
    'GH'
should be pronounced like the way Parisian and Germans pronounce the letter 'R' . There are separate letters to signify 'SH', and there three versions of 'TH' , one like in 'THE' , another harder one like in 'THOUGHT' , and a third much heavier version.
There are two types of 'T' 'K' 'D' 'S' , and 'H' one is pronounced lightly and the other much heavier, the heavier

    Welcome to Arabic Studies
Arabic is the mother language of over 250 million people in the Middle East (West Asia and North Africa), and one of the six official languages of the United Nations. Arabic is also the language of the Qur'an with special importance to all Muslims in the world numbering over one billion people. Arabic is the language of an ancient civilisation, which contributed greatly to human knowledge. Its influence is strongly felt on such languages as Persian, Turkish, Urdu, Indonesian and Malay, among others. Many European languages still preserve hundreds of words from Arabic origin in various fields of knowledge. Arabic is also the living medium of a contemporary dynamic literature and culture. Its rich and magnificent poetry, classical and modern, is especially captivating. Dr Nijmeh Hajjar

:: Overview :: Origins Language Demographics Family ... Credits Who are Arab Americans?
Arab Americans are U.S. citizens and permanent residents who trace their ancestry to or who immigrated from Arabic-speaking places in southwestern Asia and northern Africa, a region known as the Middle East. Not all people in this region are Arabs. Most Arab Americans were born in the United States. How many Arab Americans are there?
This is the subject of some debate. Estimates vary because the U.S. Census Bureau does not use an Arab American classification and because people identify themselves in various ways. Some Arab Americans identify themselves as Middle Eastern, for example. Recent immigrants from many countries are reluctant to give personal and confidential information to the government, and an increasing number of people have more than one ethnicity. Estimates of Arab Americans living in the United States are about 3 million. Where do Arab Americans live?
Arab Americans live in all 50 states, but about a third are concentrated in California, Michigan and New York. Another third are in these seven states: Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Ohio, Texas and Virginia. What are the population centers for Arab Americans?
