All-American Soap Box Derby
At the 65th annual Soap Box Derby, Evan Griffin, age 15, rolled to the Masters title in 28.26 seconds in his tiger-striped car. Roger Youmans Jr., 13, raced to a win in the Super Stock division in 28.57 and Anderson, Ind. native, Cameron Vannatta won with a time of 28.67 in a photo finish over Ashley Porter and Lavera Allen in the Stock division. The All-America Soap Box Derby is a coasting race for small gravity-powered cars built by their drivers and assembled within strict guidelines on size, weight and cost. The Derby was started by Dayton, Ohio newsman Myron Scott after he witnessed several boys racing handmade carts down a hill while on a photographic assignment in 1933. Scott decided to start an organized race for kids and the first All-American Soap Box Derby was held in Dayton in 1934. The race got its name because early on most cars were built from wooden soap boxes. The following year, the race was moved to Akron because of its central location and hilly terrain. In 1936, town leaders saw the need for a permanent site for the growing event and with the help of the Works Progress Administration, Derby Downs was constructed. One champion reigned at the All-American Soap Box Derby each year from 1934-75; Junior and Senior division champions from 1976-87; Kit and Masters champions from 1988-91; Stock, Kit and Masters champions from 1992-94; Stock, Super Stock and Masters champions starting in 1995.

That letter established the purpose for Martin's trip; he was an expert on landing craft on loan from Mountbatten's staff for the planning of the Mediterranean operations. By way of introducing Martin, Mountbatten noted he had been right about the Dieppe raid when most of the Combined Operations staff had been wrong. Since this was the first admission by the British that Dieppe had been something less than a success, it gave the entire ruse an additional shot of credibility. The Mountbatten letter also contained a side comment about sardines being rationed in England. It was a crude joke by British standards, but Montagu correctly guessed the Germans would not be able to resist that piece of bait either.

Teacher Tools ... Help Provided in partnership with the Council for Exceptional Children Adapting Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science Materials for the Inclusive Classroom
Little research has been conducted on how to adapt and implement materials effectively with students. Research on how to successfully weave adaptations into the general education curriculum is even more sparse. The few studies that have been conducted in this area indicate:
  • The process for determining when materials should be adapted
  • The focus of the adaptation
  • How the adaptation should be implemented with students
  • How students become informed about the adaptation
In some cases, making and implementing an effective adaptation can be more time consuming and complex than teaching a student the skills needed to meet a particular demand. Therefore, the process for determining when and how a particular adaptation should be used is as important as the adaptation itself. The following are steps that provide a suggested framework for making decisions about using material adaptations effectively. To see the entire article, click on the title link.
