Michael Wirts
As a young boy growing up in Southern California, I held a fascination with construction sites, always being drawn towards them for exploration and discovery. This deep attraction to building was likely due to my parents giving me toys that one had to put together to make a whole composition out of the sum of the parts.
During my teenage years I moved to the San Bernadino National Forest Mountain Region. Living there opened up my awareness to the natural beauty that surrounded me. This awakening has remained with me ever since, as I always strive to live and work with beauty as my creative impetus.
While attending college I had a professor who was also a major influence on my path towards becoming an architect. "David Hatfield" was an individual that held on to his own way of thinking and encourages others to do so as well. He has his students read Emerson's "Self Reliance," Thoreau's "Walden," and Ayn Rand's "Fountainhead." He also built his own non-permitted glass "A" frame residence. His lectures were very inspiring to a young person full of dreams.
In the early 1980's I journeyed to the San Francisco Bay Region to work with an architect in Marin County. During my tenure in his office I worked on many commercial projects in addition to several single-family homes along the coastal region. This is where I "got my feet wet" with the architect-client relationship.

Vienna-born modernist R. M. Schindler is perhaps best known for the first pure International Style house built in America, his 1926 Lovell Beach House. After gaining early experience in the office of Frank Lloyd Wright, Schindler began his own practice in California. Designer and builder some of the most innovative buildings of the early 20th Century, Schindler designed the Lovell Beach House for same progressive physician who later commissioned Richard Neutra to design his well known Los Angeles home. The Lovell Beach House consists of a series of five concrete frames that form the main structure. The rhythm of these planes provides a striking composition of forms, and elegantly elevates the main living spaces above the surrounding ground level for a panorama of the ocean beyond.

Brief Biography of
Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) "...having a good start, not only do I fully intend to be the greatest architect who has yet lived, but fully intend to be the greatest architect who will ever live. Yes, I intend to be the greatest architect of all time." - Frank Lloyd Wright Considered the most influential architect of his time, Frank Lloyd Wright designed about 1,000 structures, some 400 of which were built. He described his "organic architecture" as one that "proceeds, persists, creates, according to the nature of man and his circumstances as they both change." As a pioneer whose ideas were well ahead of his time, Wright had to fight for acceptance of every new design. The famous American architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, was the son of William C. Wright and Anna Lloyd Jones in the United States in the small rural community of Richland Center, Wisconsin on June 8, 1867. His early influences were his clergyman father's playing of Bach and Beethoven and his mother's gift of geometric blocks. He entered the University of Wisconsin at 15 as a special student, studying engineering because the school had no course in architecture. Wright left Madison in 1887 to work as a draftsman in Chicago. In order to study architecture and learn the traditional, classical language, Wright, the country boy, had to go Chicago. Wright worked for several architectural offices until he finally found a job with the most cultured architect of the Mid-West

Biography Considered the most influential architect of his time, Frank Lloyd Wright designed about 1,000 structures, some 400 of which were built. He described his "organic architecture" as one that "proceeds, persists, creates, according to the nature of man and his circumstances as they both change." As a pioneer whose ideas were well ahead of his time, Wright had to fight for acceptance of every new design.
Wright was born on June 8, 1869, in Richland Center, Wis. The next year he joined the firm of Adler and Sullivan, soon becoming Louis Sullivan's chief assistant. Wright was assigned most of the firm's designing of houses, and to pay his many debts he designed for private clients in his spare time. Sullivan disapproved, and Wright set up his own office.
As an independent architect, Wright became the leader of a style known as the Prairie school. Houses with low-pitched roofs and extended lines that blend into the landscape typify the style. In 1904 he designed the strong, functional Larkin Building in Buffalo, N.Y., and in 1906 the Unity Temple in Oak Park, Ill. Wright visited Japan and Europe. In 1911 he returned to build a home on his grandfather's Wisconsin farm, Taliesin (Welsh for "shining brow"). In 1916 he designed the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, floating the structure on an underlying sea of mud that resulted in little damage to the building in the catastrophic earthquake of 1923.

OCTOBER 21, 1997
NEWSHOUR TRANSCRIPT In Bilbao, Spain, a marriage of American and Basque cultures has created a monumental new museum. The man who designed the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Frank Gehry, talks about his inspirations and the process of building what many are hailing as the "Bilbao Miracle". ELIZABETH FARNSWORTH: The fourth largest city in Spain, a gritty industrial port in the Northern Basque region, may seem an odd setting for a major new museum of 20th century art, let alone one being hailed as an architectural masterpiece. But there it is, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, designed by Frank Gehry. It’s the result of an unusual deal between the New York-based Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and the Basque regional government, which is trying to spruce up an image tarnished by terrorism. Bilbao, the largest city in Basque country, is a stronghold of the separatist group ETA, which seeks independence from Spain sometimes through violent means. For the Guggenheim Foundation it was a win/win deal. The Basques agreed to foot both the $100 million construction bill and the operating costs of the new museum, the centerpiece of a huge urban renewal project for Bilbao. The Guggenheim Foundation gets to run the new museum and gets plenty of space257,000 square feet to be exactto display more of its art.

Principal's Bio "World-class architecture..." Gary Delson, architectural critic "A clean, simple-looking marriage of water, concrete and glass…[the Lakeside Studio is] an exuberant jewel in the landscape, a radical, architectonic form, in contrast to its pastoral setting…in the manner of Cubist inspired buildings like Le Corbusier's Chapel at Ronchamp. The New York Times "[The Lakeside Studio] is a method of composition inspired by abstract painting and sculpture." The Times, London "Mark Dziewulski's Studio is a superb work of art… a spectacular work of architecture, beautifully crafted, sensitively located and a celebration of the interaction of interior and exterior space. The design demonstrates an exploration of both formal and technical issues with great skill." Architect's Journal "[The Lakeside Studio] represents a marvel of complexity…it is like a finely wrought, three dimensional composition." Interior Design Magazine "Not only does the sculptured three-dimensional form of the [Virgin Megastore] provide an efficient engineering solution to the complex structural problems involved but it gives Virgin Records a distinct presence and an identifiable image… [it] has become an icon." Architectural Design "[Rocky Ridge Town Center] is a landmark that fosters a sense of community."

PETER B. LEWIS
Peter B. Lewis, chairman, chief executive and president of The Progressive Corporation, brings the same sensibilities to his philanthropy that he brings to business. That is, he invests in people with a clear, creative, courageous vision who break new ground and show results.
Two recent precedent-setting charitable gifts epitomize Mr. Lewis' philosophy. He has committed a total of $50 million to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the largest gift ever made to that institution. Mr. Lewis' recent $40 million commitment, solely for the museum's endowment, supports Director Thomas Krens' unorthodox vision and strategy for creating a global art museum for the 21st century. Mr. Lewis pledged $10 million in 1995 for the restoration of and public education programming for the Museum's Frank Lloyd Wright Theatre.
Mr. Lewis' $24 million gift to the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University will fund construction of a new, unique campus designed by world-renowned architect Frank O. Gehry. The new Peter B. Lewis Campus will provide a stimulating and creative learning environment that supports Weatherhead School's nationally recognized innovative curriculum.
Mr. Lewis' risk-taking, performance-driven philosophy has worked well in business. In 1965, in one of the first leveraged buyouts in history, he took control of a small Cleveland insurance company with $6 million in revenues specializing in drivers who had difficulty finding auto insurance. Over the past 30 years, without making any major acquisitions, Lewis has transformed the 100-employee company into a full-line auto insurer with 14,000 employees and 1997 sales of $4.8 billion. Today, Progressive is the nation's fifth largest auto insurer and ranks among the top companies in any industry for long-term growth and total return to shareholders.

Two reviews, the first by Frank Laraway, former Taliesin Apprentice, then by William Allin Storrer, PhD Re: Ken Burns Public TV Work on The Life of Frank Lloyd Wright TO THE LOYAL FRIENDS OF FLW AND ORGANIC ARCHITECTURE: by Taliesin Apprentice Frank Laraway Am I alone in my very negative reaction and assessment of Ken Burn's recent TV essay on the life and work of Frank Lloyd Wright? Did anyone else notice the general implication of the distortions, half truths and the back-handed put down (intentional or unintentional) of his life and work? Does anyone dare speak out against this highly touted but misleading video essay? Did it not insinuate that the significance of the many trials of his life, his faults, his failures, his immoralities, his times of poverty and woe, far exceeded his accomplishments and his philosophy of Organic Architecture? Did it not dwell on the personal, as opposed the The Idea, The Work and the quality and volume of his artful design? Did it not spend inordinate amounts of video time with interviews of people who historically or even currently, really never understood, much less favored his uniquely American Movement? Did it not vent the very esoteric, artistic philosophy and rhetoric which has dominated American art and architectural criticism in opposition to Wright and his Organic Architecture since he and it began? The particular selections of the various periods of his life, the dreary black and white views of old work, the unfortunate old photos of him, rerun -TV shots of his aged face, all gave the public a most negative impression of the man himself. The editorial obsession with his amorous affairs, marriages, divorces, his personal mistakes, his financial woes, his proclivity for debt and living beyond his means, his leaking roofs, all gave the general impression that they literally dominated his life and work.
