1867 to 1959 Frank Lloyd Wright "The greatest artist this country has ever produced seems at last to be coming into his own.
America's other great artists our painters, sculptors, composers - don't really rank with the tops of
all time. They're not Rembrandt or Michelangelo or Beethoven. Wright alone has that standing." - Robert Campbell, architectural writer

...about Sverre Fehn
Note to editors: Detailed lists of awards and a chronological list of selected projects are available in the Fact Sheet section of this media kit.
Sverre Fehn has long been recognized in Europe as Norway's most gifted architect. Now, as the recipient of the 1997 Pritzker Architecture Prize, his profession's highest honor, the rest of the world will be exposed to his talents.
Categorized as a modernist by most architectural writers, Fehn himself says, I have never thought of myself as modern, but I did absorb the anti-monumental and the pictorial world of LeCorbusier, as well as the functionalism of the small villages of North Africa. You might say I came of age in the shadow of modernism.
I always thought I was running away from traditional Norwegian architecture, says Fehn, but I soon realized that I was operating within its context. How I interpret the site of a project, the light, and the building materials have a strong relationship to my origins.
He has no built works in the United States, but is not a total stranger since he has been a guest lecturer at The Cooper Union in New York City; Cranbrook Academy of Arts in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan; the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts all in 1980. He has also lectured at Harvard, Cornell, and Yale. His work was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in 1968, and at the Architecture Association of Minneapolis in 1983.

...about Tadao Ando
Tadao Ando of Osaka, Japan is a man who is at the pinnacle of success in his own country. In the last few years, he has emerged as a cultural force in the world as well. In 1995, the Pritzker Architecture Prize was formally presented to him within the walls of the Grand Trianon Palace at Versailles, France. There is little doubt that anyone in the world of architecture will not be aware of his work. That work, primarily in reinforced concrete, defines spaces in unique new ways that allow constantly changing patterns of light and wind in all his structures, from homes and apartment complexes to places of worship, public museums and commercial shopping centers.
"In all my works, light is an important controlling factor," says Ando. "I create enclosed spaces mainly by means of thick concrete walls. The primary reason is to create a place for the individual, a zone for oneself within society. When the external factors of a city's environment require the wall to be without openings, the interior must be especially full and satisfying."
And further on the subject of walls, Ando writes, "At times walls manifest a power that borders on the violent. They have the power to divide space, transfigure place, and create new domains. Walls are the most basic elements of architecture, but they can also be the most enriching."

F rank Lloyd Wright was born on June 8, 1867, in Richland Center, Wisconsin, to Anna Lloyd-Jones Wright, a teacher whose large Welsh family of farmers and ministers settled the valley that became Taliesin, and William Russell Cary Wright, a preacher and musician. An early influence was his clergyman father's playing of Bach and Beethoven. (Later on Wright would make comparisons to music and architecture in relation to the mathematical aspects of both.) George Washington Maher
George Washington Maher was born in Mill Creek, West Virginia, on December 25, 1864. During his teens he apprenticed to prominent Chicago architects Augustus Bauer and Henry Hill. Maher joined the office of Shingle style architect J. L. Silsbee as a draftsman in 1887, where he worked with fellow draftsman Frank Lloyd Wright. In 1888 Maher formed a short-lived partnership with Cecil Corwin. After Corwin left, Maher practiced alone until 1914, when his son Philip joined him for a brief period. After the war the firm became George W. Maher and Son. During the 1890s Maher worked in a variety of styles. His Shingle and Queen Anne projects were widely reviewed in the journal Inland Architect during this period. Maher modeled his design for the Fresno Library and Water Tower Maher's most important and productive period came after 1904. His bold and idiosyncratic residential interpretations of the Prairie ideal were built throughout Chicago's suburbs, including Oak Park, Evanston, Kenilworth, and Winnetka. He developed the campus plan for Northwestern University in 1907 and designed Swift Hall and Patten Gymnasium on that campus. He also did a great deal of work in Wausau, Wisconsin. After World War I, Maher became a vocal proponent of community planning and prepared development plans for Glencoe and Kenilworth. He is also credited with forming the committee that launched the first efforts to restore the Fine Arts Building designed by Charles Atwood for the 1893 Columbian Exposition at Chicago.

http://www.multied.com/bio/people/Wright.html
Frank Llyod Wright American Architect Frank Lloyd Wright's impact on American architecture and design is considered almost incalculable. In his public buildings, private homes, glass design work and furniture, Wright was an American original. He was endlessly fascinated by the challenge of bringing function, form and location together in architectural harmony. Wright was wonderfully innovative with new materials, finding unusual ways to employ them. He was originally trained as a civil engineer and worked as a draftsman prior to striking out on his own in 1893. He became known for his "Prairie-style" houses and his clean, streamlined forms. His Fallingwater house in Pennsylvania still awes and impresses visitors, as do many of his surviving buildings, including the Guggenheim Museum in New York City and the Robie house in Chicago.

Walter March was an architect and an artist in many different materials.Born in Germany, he studied in Chicago with frank lloyd wright.
http://www.oldcityhallgallery.com/Sylvia_March_Bio.html
The Marches escaped from Nazi Germany in 1936 and bought a dairy farm in Orange County, NY Sylvia, the youngest of their five children, was born there. But farming could not pay education bills and the land was sold. At her first class, the instructor showed her how to make a tea bowl, and said " Now, make a hundred of them " At first the work was hard and slow. But with repetition and persistence, a love for the skill came. In time, she learned to "throw off the hump," making small pots flow one after another from a single large piece of spinning clay. During Sylvia's two years in Japan, she visited the pottery villages where the clay is dug from the fields, raw materials are respected, and the traditions of the craft are passed down from father to son as they have been for hundreds of years "Beauty and usefulness go hand in hand," she explains "You make a 'one-flower vase' and you know where it is going in your house Rice bowls come to a sharp point at the bottom so that you can get the last grain with your chopsticks " Everything felt connected She would have liked to live her whole life in Japan But even though, inside, she felt Japanese, Sylvia was a

Well, the reason is that my sister Jackie is an architect. She is currently a fellow at Taliesin Associated Architects, which is the firm that Frank Lloyd Wright founded. She lives with the fellowship in Spring Green, WI, at Wright's home. If you are ever in Wisconsin, I highly recommend that you visit this beautiful place, located a short drive from Madison. My other sister Thea lives here in Cambridge. After two postdocs, she is now a research scientist at a biotech company. Both of my parents are biochemists and professors at UC Riverside . They really like vitamin D One of my desires is to travel extensively. I love traveling both within and outside of the states. Click here for pictures of some Frank Lloyd Wright Buildings.
