"Hildebrand applies his considerable descriptive skills to examples from the history of architecture before and after the domestic work of Wright. Examining the spatial rhythms of his selections with evident pleasure and helpful clarity, Hildebrand applies the intriguing classifications of refuge and prospectromantic enclosure vs. classical opennessto describe interior space. . . . Original and important observations." Library Journal "Hildebrand's book presents practical criteria that help us to understand our emotional reaction to a space: refuge and prospect (view), enticement and peril, order and complexity. These terms take on valuable meaning by way of the author's excellent examples and the 125 black-and-white photographs that keep the reader on track. A worthwhile, intelligent guide for all architecture lovers." Booklist "Hildebrand has committed the equivalent of heresy as far as the mandarins of architectural academia are concerned. . . But Hildebrand's book is too good to be ignored or seriously criticized. He not only pursues his premise without insisting on it as the sole means of understanding architecture, but he also provides some of the best analytical descriptions of buildings available."

Irving J. Gill Irving John Gill has been widely regarded as San Diego's most prominent and innovative architect. He was born April 26, 1870, in Tully, New York. The son of a farmer, he had no formal education. He began studying architecture in the Syracuse, New York, office of Ellis G. Hall, then in Chicago under Joseph L Silsbee. In 1891 Gill worked alongside Frank Lloyd Wright at the firm Adler and Sullivan in Chicago. After arriving in San Diego in 1893, Gill experimented with many styles, won loyal clients, and made a name for himself among the community's leading citizens, Progressive and otherwise. The Arts and Crafts philosophy was just beginning to take hold in San Diego when Gill arrived, but significant Craftsman influences did not appear in his work until about 1905. The Green Dragon in La Jolla (1894), whose cottages Gill designed, drew the finest musicians from around the country to entertain both colony residents and Hotel Del Coronado visitors. In 1894, he began working on houses with Joseph Falkenham, a member of the city's Board of Public Works, many in the Queen Anne style. Falkenham left in 1895, leaving Gill to make a name for himself. He succeeded in doing so, lining up a string of prominent San Diegans as his clients and hinting at his future work in the David K. Horton house's solid lines and clean geometry in National City in 1895. In December 1896, Gill began working with William S. Hebbard, an architect with academic training who complemented Gill's lack of book learning. Their partnership was characterized by influences from the Transportation Building and the neoclassicism of the 1893 World's Fair and by many English-style houses, "from large brick mansions to half-timbered cottages, often with massive stone foundations" and paneled inside with slabs of redwood.

Bibliography Work Taliesin Years I was well primed for excitement when I discovered the work of Frank Lloyd Wright in my freshman year in architectural college. I caught fire. It seemed that this was what I had been unconsciously seeking. His lofty ideals of beauty and honesty, his sense of the interrelatedness of architecture with every other part of life, his concept of developing a building as an analogy to natural growth, his love of the land, and their embodiment in his extraordinary buildings became the focus of my aspirations and have remained a vital element ever since. The years at Taliesin [1939 -1942] immersed me in a totally creative environment where everyone contributed in many ways. Building went on all the time; so did music, theater, cooking, and gardening. It was an exhilarating time and the Taliesin ideal of a balanced life lived in a beautiful environment is with me still. In fairness, however, it should be said that Wright normally placed apprentices on rotating duty as construction supervisors in the field and this, when carried out, provided some of that needed experience in coping with the commercial jungle. In my case, World War II intervened before my time. From A Taliesin Legacy: The Architecture of the Apprentices of Frank Lloyd Wright.

Taliesen West Ten miles southwest of his masterpiece, Fallingwater, along a winding mountain road is a second residence designed by pre-eminent architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Kentuck Knob, blending impeccably with its surroundings, is a superb example of Wright's organic architecture. The interior, at once expansive and intimate, reflects the presence of its current owners, Great Britain's Lord and Lady Palumbo, who are dedicated patrons of the arts both at home and abroad. Commissioned in 1953 and completed in 1956 for the Hagan family of Uniontown, Pennsylvania (of Hagan Ice Cream fame), Kentuck Knob represents the realization of Wright's achievement during his 70-year career. Kentuck Knob, also known as the Hagan House, is based upon the Usonian model, typically a single, compact floor plan based upon a modular grid system. In this case the module is an equilateral triangle and is constructed of native stone, tidewater cypress and copper. Interesting features include the use of radiant heat in the concrete floors, a 'workspace' rather than a kitchen and a flat gable roof. The house stands out for its quality, pristine condition and harmonious connection to the rural mountain site on which it stands. Spectacular views, beautiful landscaping and an

Main About Us Weddings What We Offer ... Tour Information In April, 1940, Frank Lloyd Wright, world renowned architect, was commissioned to design a new building for the congregation after the burning of their building on Linwood Boulevard. Wright envisioned the entire property at 46 th and Main Streets being devoted to parking with the church building supported on graceful pillars, similar to the mushroom-shaped supports at the Johnson Wax Company office building in Racine, Wisconsin. Plans included a 1,000-seat auditorium with accommodations for a Sunday School of more than 700. Also included were a roof garden to be used for entertainment and other church functions, as well as a radical approach in construction of heating and cooling systems. Wright was considered a genius by some and was known for his complete departure from the ordinary. It was expected that the new church building would be no exception. The idea of air-conditioning for the building was met with much disfavor from Wright exclaiming "I’ve gotten more colds in so-called air-conditioned buildings than any other place." He went on to explain that the building he envisioned would be comfortably cool in the summer and warm in the winter using a floor heating and cooling system. Wright presented his finished plans to the pertinent departments of the church in June, 1940. Parking for 150 cars was allowed; construction of the building would be of steel and rose-tinted concrete. A green copper dome would sit above the chancel area. Wright claimed the building would be "fireproof, earthquake, and vermin-proof" and upkeep would be virtually nil. Wright also claimed that "it is no mere church building, but a new order dated 10 years ahead of its time."
