Learning is our future – We help people learn
Without education, there can be no development. This is true of both industrialised and developing countries – which is why education is one of the key areas of German development policy. Partner countries have great confidence in our know-how, convinced that the nation’s education system is one of the factors responsible for Germany’s international standing. However, the results of the PISA Study have cast doubt on this. ...go on top

Historic Preservation in Poland Today On March 9, 1998, over 100 preservationists from Poland and the New York gathered as guests of the Polish National Tourist Office at the Polish General Consulate Building in New York City. Presentations were made and a discussion was held to familiarize the audience with recent projects and issues in Polish preservation. Presentations were made by James Van Westering, Witold Karwowski, Marek Baranski and myself. Following are the notes for the presentation I made that evening: (Presentation to follow Mr. Karwoski's and Mr. Baranski's introduction and background on working in Poland.) Mr Karwowski has pointed out some of the sites our APT delegation visited on our journey through Poland last December. I'd like to take just few minutes to illustrate a few of those locations and point out some of the items myself and other members of the delegation found quite interesting and noteworthy. In many cases, the issues encountered are similar to our own in the United States. As mentioned, the city Szczecin and the Antikon'97 restoration trade show was the focus of our trip. The city served as a home base for us providing the opportunity see other projects and buildings in the Pomeranian area in addition to our participation with Anikon.

Grove's Dictionary of Art has been preceded by more anticipation and described with more superlatives than any previous art publishing venture. In the works since 1982, the set consists of 41,000 signed articles contributed by 6,700 scholars from 120 countries, including all former Soviet republics. It includes more biographies (20,800) than any other English-language art publication, and its 15,000 illustrations are the "largest collection of images ever published in a single work." The dictionary is intended to provide comprehensive coverage of the visual arts of every culture and civilization from prehistory to the present. It is also an interdisciplinary source, examining works of art within the social, cultural, historical, religious, and economic contexts in which they were created. The most recent comparable work, The Encyclopedia of World Art (McGraw-Hill), was published in 1959.

Our design program is intended to develop students’ abilities to conceive and accurately describe appropriate built spaces at several scales, to help them to learn the processes that can be used to bring buildings into place, and to provide a basis for understanding the consequences that complexes of buildings and open spaces have for their inhabitants, for society, and for the environment.
