Architecture After Islam Advent of Islam in Fran (635 A.D.) gave rise to great upheavals in architecture, and laid the foundations for Islamic architecture all over the world. To be sure, no Persian building from the first two Islamic centuries have survived, but from third center onward, Islamic building flourished rapidly and marvelously expanded during the next centuries.A great surge of building works together with unique decorations and calligraphy appeared in these centuries. The new chapter which was opened in the Islamic period led to the creation of remarkable religious buildings. Iranian arts such as calligraphy, stucco, mirror work, and mosaic work, became closely tied together in this new era. Islamic architecture and building decoration are among the most beautiful means of expression. Decoration does not play such an important role in any other type of architecture. The archaeological excavations have provided sufficient documents in support of the impacts of Sasanian architecture on the architecture of Islamic period. According to a classification suggested by Zaki Mohammad Hossain, the fourth period of Iranian architecture (from 15 through 17 Centuries) is the most brilliant period. Various structures such as mosques, mausoleums, bazaars, bridges, and different palaces have mainly survived from this period. In the old Iranian architecture, semi-circular and oval-shaped vaults appeared and Iranians showed their extraordinary skill in making massive domes. Domes can be seen mainly in the structure of bazaars and mosques, and particularly in the historic buildings of Isfahan. Iranian domes are distinguished for their height, proportion of elements, beauty of form, and roundness of the dome stem. The outer surfaces of the domes are mostly mosaic faced, and create a magical view.

DOE/Sandia National Laboratories
Architecture Program Aims To Make Buildings More Resistant To Terrorism And Catastrophes
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. When disaster strikes, people evacuate. That's because the structures that normally protect us buildings, bridges, dams, and tunnels are often the most dangerous places to be during catastrophes like hurricanes, earthquakes, industrial accidents, or terrorist attacks. Rudy Matalucci, a civil engineer at the U.S. Department of Energy's Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, N.M., wants people to feel compelled to run into buildings rather than out of them during emergencies. Matalucci leads a group of researchers working with government agencies, professional associations, and universities to use technology to examine the vulnerabilities of structures and identify changes in architectural designs, building codes, and construction standards so future structures might better withstand the kinds of insults that we worry about but don't plan for. Sandia has for decades applied advanced technology and sound security principles to the exacting task of making U.S. nuclear weapons as safe, secure, and reliable as possible, an expertise Labs officials call "surety." Sandia now wants many of the surety lessons learned during the Cold War how to make a building that protects nuclear materials resistant to a bomb blast or secure against a would-be saboteur, for instance to be applied to the challenge of making public buildings, homes, and other structures safer. Sandia calls the program its Architectural SuretySM initiative.

http://telecom.inescn.pt/projects/dams-2.html
Project Acronym : DAMS-2 Title : Dynamically Adaptable Multiservice System Objective : DAMS -2 aimed to develop an advanced communication system capability addressing the needs of the private communications market. It built on the result of project 1059- DAMS
At present, the vast majority of voice and data services are catered for by separate networks employing either circuit- or packet-switched techniques. The main objective of DAMS was to address the problems associated with integrating these services within the business environment. DAMS provides both time-dependent voice and time-independent data services in a fully integrated and cost-effective system matching near-term customer requirements. It implemented and validated the system concepts outlined by DAMS -1 and will also identified the migratory paths necessary to support the new services which will become available in the longer term. DAMS -2 has been based on and complies with international standards. General Information :
The private communications market has traditionally been the driving force for the introduction of new services and facilities.

Greek Architecture
The earliest buildings that were built in Greece , in the New Stone Age , are small houses or huts , and wooden walls around them for protection. Later there are bigger houses, and stone walls around the villages. By the Early Bronze Age , we find one bigger house in the middle of the village, and fancier, bigger stone walls. In the Late Bronze Age , under the influence of Western Asia , and the Minoans on Crete, there are palaces and big stone tombs , as well as paved roads and bridges, and dams (and more stone walls). During the Greek Dark Ages the palaces were burned, and the roads and bridges and dams mostly fell apart. But at the end of the Dark Ages, with the beginning of the Iron Age and the Archaic period in Greece, we see a new type of building: the temple for the gods . There are houses, but no more palaces. But roads and bridges and stone walls begin to be built again. In the Classical period , there are more temples , bigger and with new design ideas: the Parthenon is built in the 440's BC Democracy prevents the Greeks from building palaces or big tombs, because politically all men are supposed to be equal, and so it would look bad to have a big palace even if you could afford it. Instead, the Greeks build public buildings:

Islamic architecture and building decoration are among the most beautiful means of expression. Decoration does not play such an important role in any other type of architecture. According to Dr. D. Huff, a German archaeologist, the dome, similar to Iran itself, is the dominant element in Persian architecture. This statement, applies fully to Iranian architecture; because when one looks at lrano-lslamic buildings, huge halls and massive domes are the first elements which immediately attract one's attention. The art of tile work used to decorate all sorts of ivans, domes, and portals, is so interesting that each part of it seems, to be a magnificent piece of painting. Professor A.U. Pope, who had carried out extensive studies in ancient Iranian and Islamic buildings, believed: "The supreme Iranian art, in the proper meaning of the word, has always been its architecture. The supremacy of architecture applies to both pre-and post-Islamic periods.

This scheme is a proposal for redevelopment of the deteriorating industrial area in Alexandria, Zetland, and Waterloo, currently known as the Green Square which is projected to become a largest redevelopment in Sydney which will trigger development capable of accommodating five-fold increase of the current residential population. This ambitious scheme takes place in the dense currently abandoned industrial area, which lacks either topographical variations or natural / built landmarks, with no sense of identity for which no underlining design principles could be referred to. Based on this condition, it is needed to provide a degree of intervention in the urban fabric to inject new life and activity in this area. Rebirth of Historical Waterways to Recreate the Identity
Initial research of the history of Alexandria reveals that in 1890, almost half of this barren land called Green Square used to be filled with waterways and dams previously known as the Big and Small Waterloo Dams; a lagoon which in early 1910s were filled up to accommodate the major growth of industrial business in Sydney. In this new proposal of Green Square, a new network of canal system will be re-introduced to the urban fabric to recall the historical Waterloo Dams that once flows within this part of the city. The new canal network will become the main focal points of the area, giving back the sense of identity.
