    HISTORY
Europeans arrived in the region with the 1502 voyage of Amerigo Vespucci. Spanish navigator Juan Diaz de Solias visited what is now Argentina in 1516. Spain established a permanent colony on the site of Buenos Aires in 1580. They further integrated Argentina into their empire following the establishment of the Vice-Royalty of Rio de la Plata in 1776, and Buenos Aires became a flourishing port. Buenos Aires formally declared independence from Spain on July 9, 1816. Argentines revere General Jose de San Martin, who campaigned in Argentina, Chile, and Peru, as the hero of their national independence. Following the defeat of the Spanish, centralist and federalist groups waged a lengthy conflict between themselves to determine the future of the nation. National unity was established and the constitution promulgated in 1853. Two forces combined to create the modern Argentine nation in the late 19th century: the introduction of modern agricultural techniques and the integration of Argentina into the world economy. Foreign investment and immigration from Europe aided this economic revolution. The investment, primarily British, came in such fields as railroads and ports. The migrants who worked to develop Argentina's resources came from throughout Europe, but mostly from Italy and Spain. Conservative forces dominated Argentine politics until 1916, when their traditional rivals, the Radicals, won control of the government through a democratic election. The Radicals, with their emphasis on fair elections and democratic institutions, opened their doors to Argentina's expanding middle class as well as to elites previously excluded from power for various reasons. The Argentine military forced aged Radical President Hipolito Yrigoyen from power in 1930 and ushered in another decade of Conservative rule.

TO NAVIGATE WITHOUT FRAMES BACK TO HOME ... FRAMES HISTORY: MALVINAS ISLANDS Jesuit ruins of San Ignacio in the Province of Misiones Before the arrival of Europeans at the beginning of the 16th century, the area that is now known as Argentina had a population of about 100,000, mostly nomadic Indians. In 1516 Juan Díaz de Solís became the first European to set foot on Argentine soil, coming from the sea. The first settlement of Buenos Aires in 1536 by the Paraguayan Pedro de Mendoza was destroyed by the Indians. Then in 1580, Buenos Aires was founded for a second and definitive time by Juan de Garay. The colonizers brought with them the Spanish language, Catholicism and European traditions. On May 25th 1810, the first independent government was established, however, independence was not formally declared until 9th July, 1816. During most of the next decade, Argentina contributed to the independence of neighbouring countries, particularly Chile and Perú. Then began a period of intense domestic struggle among political groups, which lasted until the middle of the century. At the centre of the political dispute were the ideas of Unitarism and Federation, as well as the supremacy of Buenos Aires.

    Argentine Political Economic History
The question that probably occurs to everyone reading of Argentina's history is how can a country that has so much potential have had such a troubled history. The tragic complexity of the problems of Argentina reminds one of the tragedies of Polish history. But Polish problems developed out of and in reaction to the external pressures of its two aggressive neighbors whereas Argentina's troubles seem to be of its own people's contrivance. Perhaps there is a similar difficulty of Argentines and Poles to find compromises and to accept them. Argentine society arose out Spanish Empire institutions and the development of the natural resources of the plains, the Pampas. The land produced grain and cattle and the land was held by a few families in large estates. The oligarchy of leading families ruled and controlled the economy and politics of Argentina. The revenues of these families came from the export of beef and grain. They spent their earnings on imported products. They supported free trade. They encouraged immigration from Europe as a source of an educated work force which would develop the economy of Buenos Aires. The oligarchy wanted political stability and supported a strong central authority as a means of promoting that stability. Generally otherwise they wanted as little involvement of the government in the economy as possible. In a word, the oligarchs were classical liberals.

    Argentine Cricket: A Brief History
The British community in Argentina was, at one time, the largest outside the Commonwealth, so it is not surprising to find that the first reference to cricket was in 1806 by Major Alexander Gillespie, a Royal Marine's officer who was taken prisoner during a British capture of Buenos Aires. He writes in the paper Gleanings and Remarks 'The arrears due being settled at Esquina, and a repose of some days being allowed us, full pockets and vacant time revived the national diversions of horse racing and cricket, for which we always carried the material.' There is reference the English language weekly newspaper, the British Packet , in its edition of 22nd October 1831 of a cricket club being formed in Buenos Aires. The Argentine Cricket Association was formed in 1913. The history of cricket in Argentina can roughly be divided into various phases:
Cricket is established in Argentina, the first international matches are played, the major Clubs are founded, and the great North v South contest begins.

    A bit of history
Before the arrival of the Spaniards, several indigenous groups populated the region. Another version related to the origin of the word Patagonia also making reference to the tehuelches, but in this case it says that the name comes from the huge tracks they left on the snow, due in part to their physique and also to the fact that they covered their feet with skins. Today, most of the Patagonian aborigines live in reserves or work in estancias. The mapuches constitute the most numerous community, with some 35,000 people. Rests of the primitive life of indigenous people are found in caverns with paintings and stone deposits called "picaderos" where even today arrow heads and different tools can be found.
    Facts about Patagonia
The Argentine Patagonia is located in the south of the American continent. It extends from the Colorado River to Tierra del Fuego Its topography can be compared to gigantic stairs with the highest step being the Andean Range

    Argentina Now
In the midst of growing poverty, unemployment, government corruption, and a freeze on bank deposits, thousands of Argentines took to the streets in the final weeks of 2001, an unprecedented public protest which has changed the political landscape of this once prosperous South American country. Since then, the country has been undergoing an often times agonizing process which some have characterized as "the death of Argentina" and others have called "the birth of a new republic." This site was created to inform the English speaking world about current events in Argentina, and to create a forum where readers and writers can exchange opinions about the Argentine situation, especially as it relates to international concerns like globalization, the external debt of developing countries, and the growing gap between the rich and poor.

The last decade has seen a world-wide explosion of interest in the most unlikely places. In London you can tango every night of the week; in tiny towns in Holland, Germany, even Norway and Finland (where it has been declared as national music and dance) , tango aficionados gather together night after night. Japan has its own tango sub-culture . Due to this impossibility of understanding by other audiences, the diffusion of tango was difficult and was basically approached through dance, which was earlier than tango itself in its most characteristic musical format (let alone sung tango, which arrived much later). It is clear that tango culture, understood as some particular usages and customs, is earlier than tango as an artistic expression. Salon dances involving a man and a woman embracing were the precedent for tango, which was refined until it became what has long been known as tango. Somebody said: -Tango is something else than a soft wave turned into music, it is the deepest dance in the world -, and he who spoke these words was not Argentine. The truth is that it must be acknowledged that it represents the last step in the universal dance evolution as regards dances of mixed couples. What started with dance was eventually coming of age in the expert hands of great men, who, inspired in the popular melting pot, captured the richest part of the Buenos Aires culture in their compositions. Themes always refer to the ordinary man and his problems, the city and memories. Thus, tango becomes a portrayal of Buenos Aires and its people. For this reason, undoubtedly, since the best of the Buenos Aires culture is carried in each song, tango gained ground abroad.

In 1502, there was the first encounter of the Spaniards with the lands which would later become the Argentine territory . Twenty five years later, the first Spanish settlement took place, which was finally dismantled by the Indians.
