    Binary Numbers
Computers work as we know them today through a serendipitous interplay of three developments:
    • binary arithmetic
    • boolean logic (developed by George Boole)
    • digital electronics (originally based on relays for telephone company applications)
We can represent numbers in binary; we can define the operations of binary arithmetic in terms of boolean logic; and we can implement boolean logic with digital electronics. Without that, computers would (at best) be very different than they are today...
Arithmetic in radixes other than 10
Remember that a number actually represents a polynomial: 12,573 means 1*10,000 + 2*1,000 + 5*100 + 7*10 + 3*1. Alternatively, we could write it as It turns out that there's absolutely nothing sacred about our choice of 10 for a number radix a few cultures have used five, pre-Columbians in Central America (the Mayans, for instance) used 20, and the ancient Babylonians used 60 (we've inherited our system of dividing circles into degrees, minutes, and seconds from this). I've seen the claim that the Hebrews used 10 for some purposes and 12 for others, but haven't been able to verify it (but notice that our names for the numbers 11 and 12 don't follow the same scheme as the numbers from 13 to 19, and our division of the day into hours also apears to be a vestige of a duodecimal numbering system). So, instead of 10, we could use 8, 16, 79, 13... as we please. In general, we can define any integer number radix

Practicing these questions will help you become familiar with the question types you will find on the General Test. These questions will provide you with immediate feedback on your answers. If your answer is correct, the answer choice button turns GREEN ; if it is incorrect, the button turns RED . Clicking on the 'Rationale' button, which appears for certain questions, provides you with an explanation of the answer. Your percentage of correct answers within each section is calculated and displayed for your reference. These questions do not represent the length of the actual test or the format of test questions. They are presented in a format specifically designed for the Web. NOTE: The analytical section of the General Test was discontinued on September 30, 2002. The network sponsors postdoc positions, visiting researchers and network meetings. The Midterm evaluation meeting is organized by the Leiden team . It will take place at the Lorentz Center in the city of Leiden in the Netherlands in the period June 10-14 2002. This meeting will bring the different nodes of the network together to discuss the present state of the project. In lectures of the researchers from the various nodes we will review the results that we have obtained, and we will outline the plans for the next few years 2002-2004. Frege's Logic, Theorem, and Foundations for Arithmetic
Frege formulated two distinguished formal systems and used these systems in his attempt both to express certain basic concepts of mathematics precisely and to derive certain mathematical laws from the laws of logic. In his Begriffsschrift of 1879, he developed a second-order predicate calculus and used it both to define interesting mathematical concepts and to state and prove mathematically interesting propositions. However, in his Grundgesetze der Arithmetik of 1893/1903, Frege added (as an axiom) what he thought was a distinguished logical proposition (Basic Law V) and tried to derive the fundamental theorems of various mathematical (number) systems from this proposition. Unfortunately, not only did Basic Law V fail to be a logical proposition, but the resulting system proved to be inconsistent, for it was subject to Russell's Paradox. Although the inconsistency in Frege's Grundgesetze is widely known, it is not very well known that a deep theoretical accomplishment can be extracted from his work. The

Abstract: INTRODUCTION The FMLIB package of Fortran subroutines for floating-point multiple-precision computation now includes routines to evaluate the Gamma function and related functions. These routines use the basic FM operations and derived types [Smith 1991; 1998] for multiple-precision arithmetic, constants, and elementary functions. The new functions available are essentially those in the chapter on the Gamma function in a reference such as Abramowitz and Stegun [1965]. The FM routines almost... (Update)

    Matrix Arithmetic
We present three interactive web-based demonstrations which help teach students the basics of addition, subtraction, and multiplication on matrices. In virtue of their instant feedback and self-paced nature, they are ideal learning tools for anyone who wishes to learn the concepts involved through directed practice. We recommend them especially strongly for use with non-majors, or for courses with a primary focus other than mathematics.
  • Matrix Addition and Subtraction
This program allows the user to choose the dimensions of the matrices to be operated upon, and input integer values for each cell. The user then chooses to add or subtract the matrices, and the program automatically displays the result. By comparing the final values with those in the intial matrices, the user is able to see the effects of matrix addition and subtraction in as many concrete examples as s/he desires.
    Stepwise Matrix Multiplication

Because multiplication for matrices is significantly more complex than addition/subtraction, this demonstration uses a particular example to show the user every step in the process separately, and does not progress to the next step until the user opts to do so. By using visual cues to highlight the significant portions of the input, the program manages the user's attention in a helpful manner.
    Matrix Multiplication

To test the user's understanding of the processes demonstrated in the previous program, this one allows the user to enter matrix dimensions and values, but then requires the user to perform the calculation. If the user errs, the erroneous entries in the final matrix are highlighted by the program, which then recommends that the user try those cells again. The user may continue to use this practice tool to get immediate feedback on her/his performance until mastery is achieved.
