Similarly, in 1999, to celebrate Florida's bicentennial, all New York Times-owned Florida newspapers (including the Gainesville Sun) will feature bi-weekly excerpts from Center holdings. Interviewer: Tom King
Interviewee: Seminole Indian Billy Cypress.
Date: October 1, 1972
Cypress was born in 1943 on the Tamiami Trail (U.S. 41). After attending public schools in south Florida, he graduated from Stetson University and later completed graduate work at Arizona State University. He served in the US Army and taught public school for several years. At the time of this interview, he had just begun working for BIA (Bureau of Indian Affairs) coordinating the Seminole boarding school program. Since that time, he has held a number of positions with the Seminole tribe and currently serves as executive director of the Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum located on the Big Cypress reservation. On Seminoles and education:
After the wars [Seminole Wars, final war ended in 1858] Seminoles...kept to themselves. They had their own way of life and education. This was fine for the...why should they go out into a foreign country and be trained or go to school? That was their school for their culture; we have our own school for our culture, too. So white man's school was taboo, and there were tribal punishments for people. In fact right here in Hollywood, Dania Reservation, the first people who went to school were very ostracized and ridiculed.

Arizona is a wonderful place with many opportunities to explore the great Southwest. The Orme School's values of tradition, excellence, and character have been an integral part of Southwestern education since the school's founding in 1929. We are a traditional college preparatory, coeducational boarding and day school located on a 40,000-acre ranch 45 minutes north of Phoenix city limits. We enroll 200 students (165 boarding and 35 day). Graduates of the Orme School enjoy a 100% acceptance rate to colleges and universities. Our student body is representative of more than 25 states and 12 foreign countries. We offer traditional college preparatory courses, as well as an Honors and Advanced Placement curriculum. Perhaps most appealing is our average classroom size of 10 students.
ESL Program
Orme has an extremely strong English as a Second Language program for our international students. The ESL teachers provide the students with strong speaking and writing skills so that they are well prepared for the TOEFL exam. The minimum expectation for students is to score a 500 on their TOEFL and several score over 600. In addition, Orme maintains an International Club for students to interact with each other.

The Christian Science Monitor Tuesday, April 2, 2002 Lesson No. 1: Shed your Indian identity By Tim Vanderpool
Special to The Christian Science Monitor W hether toddlers or teens, they were taken from home and shipped thousands of miles to dreary barracks. Their hair was cut, they were given new names, and each was assigned a number.
The United States government began this brutal attempt at social engineering in 1879. Breaking rebellious Indians by indoctrinating their children in Anglo ways was considered a cost-effective alternative to war. But the personal cost to native Americans was incalculable.
“Remembering Our Indian School Days: The Boarding School Experience,” an exhibit at the Heard Museum in Phoenix, examines this dark chapter of American history. Exhibits and books about native American boarding schools give the public “some clue about where we’ve been, and that we’re now really making a massive attempt to participate in American academic life,” says Elizabeth Cook-Lynn of South Dakota’s Crow-Creek Reservation, author of “Anti-Indianism in Modern America.”
The Heard, nationally renowned for its indigenous art and artifact collections, considers this to be the most comprehensive exhibition ever offered about the boarding schools.

"Indian people are human beings, too, as well as being Americans," Lomawaima says. "Americans should know their own history. If we can’t face the mistakes of our past, how can we possibly address the challenges of the present and future?" Lomawaima’s talk and other local community appearances are scheduled in conjunction with the current exhibition at the UO Museum of Natural History, "They Sacrificed for Our Survival: The Indian Boarding School Experience," which continues through Dec. 23. In addition, November is American Indian and Alaskan Native Heritage Month.

    http://members.aol.com/tawodi/carlisle/intro.html
    The Education of Native Americans
Mary Crow Dog, author of LAKOTA WOMAN , tells of BIA agents barging into the homes of the Sioux Indians and dragging children away from their families in order to assimilate them into "white society." She described the taking of those children to the boarding schools as "kidnapping." At the boarding schools, the children were forced to cut their hair, kept away from their families, sometimes were told their families were dead or didn t want them anymore and often abused both mentally and physically. In her book, she describes the schools as, "sterile, cold atmosphere, an unfamiliar routine, language problems, and above all the maza-skan-skan, that damn clock white man's time as opposed to Indian time, which is natural time." (p. 29). One of the saddest chapters in Native American history has to be these children who were forcibly removed from their homes and families to attend boarding schools. Many times, Indian children died at these schools - from diseases they had no natural immunity to, from homesickness and other factors. There are hundreds of graves, over 250 at Carlisle alone, of these children who suffered and died alone and lonely, far from all that was familiar to them, remembered only by those friends and family who mourned their loss. The children who survived the training were no better off - and in some cases worse off - than those who escaped the forced schooling. They often found themselves unwelcome in white society in spite of their painful acculterization process, and sometimes returned to their tribes to find they were no longer accepted there either.
